What is happening to liberals in this country?

I certainly respect your opinion on this matter, and we are all free to make our own decisions on "respect".

To me, in the era of Trump, the USA Flag is just another tricolored piece of cloth.

In my darker moods, I often reread an essay called Desert, the thesis of which is that the world will not be saved and climate change will kill millions, but humanity will survive and there will be anarchies within the world.

 

And if Trump's politics were a good long-term strategy, he could have won over the majority of voters. Hate to break it to you, but this last election was between two of the least popular candidates in history. Both parties were racing for the bottom. And with the way Trump is fracturing the party, he's shooting Republican chances in the foot for 2018 and 2020.

 

I did find one use for the flag.

What's really funny about the left is that overpopulation is the biggest driver of climate change, but they aren't willing to acknowledge that fact, since almost all of the population growth is coming from black and brown areas, who then send their surplus populations into the West. There was a time where our universities and colleges used to be a places where different ideas were bantered around, heard and debated. Today it does seem that has ceased to exist. That a lot of universities and colleges don't want to debate different ideas or political philosophies. They want their campuses to be free of any ideas those in charge don't agree or have themselves.

There used to be an adage, "I might disagree with what you say, but I'll defend your right to say it." Is that adage dead? It does seem so on a lot of college campuses.

I can't tell you who I think will win because we don't even know who the candidates are yet. I can tell you I'm not nearly gullible enough to believe Trump can ever get 400 electoral votes.

 

You're actually touching on a major point of contention between leftist groups. There's post-left nihilist types who believe that industrial civilization is doomed and that we just need to pick up from the ashes, and there's social ecology types who believe that our institutions are simply misusing technology and that we can reorganize society such that we live more sustainably.

I get in pessimistic moods, but I ultimately side more with social ecology.

 

College campuses are the public square

If protestors who also have a right to assemble publicly block you, you just gotta deal. Freedom of speech also means the freedom to drown you out.

 

As with crazy right-wingers, it's a fringe minority stirring up trouble. Most people are too centrist/moderate to care that much, let alone go around threatening people according to political creeds bordering on religious.

I don't see how that's even possible. We currently have 7.6 billion people in the world, scheduled to increase to 11 billion by the end of the century. We are already having problems with resource depletion. There won't be enough food and water for everybody in the coming years, especially since the left is against genetic modification to food to increase crop yields and shelf life. This problem will grow exponentially once India and China get closer to the West in terms of living standards. But at least China is doing something to slow their growth rate. At some point the left will have to deal with the problem of too many Africans and Indians having too many children. Good luck selling birth control to them.
