The patriot act says his concerns are not unfounded though.

This makes a lot of sense to me. I think many conservatives have bent the stick too far in the direction of anti-state libertarianism. Normally, that's a good bias to have. But ... as Mr Hobbes established 400 or so years ago, we do have the state for a reason. And, traditionally, conservatives have understood this. We need to re-discover our authoritarian streak. Of course the Left will say, "See, strong powerful government, that can even tell you where you can walk, is good! It's saving the economy! Let's have more!" Our side needs to examine each proposal on its merits, with a bias towards freedom from state intervention. A good place to start would be to re-examine the circumstances under which martial law is justified.

Authoritarian streaks have no place in a free society. The state is a necessary evil that must be minimized.

Actually, History is rarely learned from because it's never taught(or the important lessons.) This goes both ways. The masks reduced the Spanish Flu by 90% according to this. Yet, what did we hear from the CDC/WHO, prior to a freaking week ago?

You think if they prioritized the well-being of the citizens, over the "medical needs", we might've been wearing masks sooner? Of course.

Everything, from the economic suspension, to "not wearing masks" has been a sacrifice, a sacrifice that we are told is absolutely necessary. Well, it's time to flip that around and they need to make sacrifices, for the greater human populations in America and the world.

We need to wear masks in public to protect ourselves. And our protection, like they said: Helps them help us by not being sick in the first place. So medical community, its time to take one for the team after we've taken one for the team since early March of 2020.

Sure, as a generalization. The devil is in the details. For instance, are you in favor of abolishing child labor laws? Would you allow me to manufacture high explosives in my basement?

I think of conservatism as having as a central component, a special regard for common sense, which is just an aspect of its special regard for time-honored customs and habits.

When people get captured by ideology, that's the end of their ability to contribute to solving our problems.

To be frank I have yet to see a single rightwing conservative provide a viable solution to our current problems.

Why has Captain Capitalism failed to come to our rescue if the Private Sector is ALWAYS better at doing things than the government?

Instead we see the hard evidence of conservative neoliberalism COLLAPSING all around us. Just in Time Supply Chains are INCAPABLE of ADAPTING and delivering what the market NEEDS right NOW!

State governments FORCED to turn to the Private Sector are being GOUGED and EXPLOITED when LIVES are at stake.

And when the Private Sector does agree to deliver it OVER PROMISES and then FAILS to deliver.

There is zero "common sense" in a system that is so utterly focused on the SINGLE all consuming goal of EXTRACTING every last dollar of PROFIT to hand over to the GREED obsessed Wall Street Casino Banksters that it falls apart when it is needed most.

In evolutionary terms anything that FAILS to ADAPT when the environment changes is DOOMED to EXTINCTION.

Conservative neoliberalism falls into that category.

What our nation needs instead are things like Healthcare for All and Social Safety Nets to see us through times like this because this Pandemic is only one of many problems we are going to be facing in the future.

Yes, we still need Capitalism but it must be Well Regulated and Conservative neoliberalism needs to be trashed because that would be the common sense approach to solving our problems.

Masks do not stop a virus. Wear one if you want to, but they won't do much of anything besides make one look silly.

What is worse now is not the COVID pandemic, but the absolute economic devastation we are about to see. We are going to see a massive influx of extreme poverty and then, very soon, we will see extreme food shortages. When those two clash, that's when you are going to see real death. There are people today who are getting extremely desperate as they no longer have an income and their food is running out. Anarchy will look much better than what is in our future!

Other western nations face the exact same issues so they have taken steps to ensure their food supply chains continue to function and they provide some form of income to those who no longer have any so that they can afford to buy food.

If there are extreme food shortages combined with extreme poverty then the Covidiot-in-Chief if 100% RESPONSIBLE for FAILING to ensure that does NOT happen since he has a SWORN DUTY to PROTECT We the People.

The ONLY reason he could have for NOT putting those things in place is because he wants there to be anarchy so that he can declare martial law and make himself dictator for life.

I don't see that happening around me. I don't think it will happen on a national scale either. I certainly hope not.

    I know, let's try facts.

    https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/burden/index.html

CDC estimates that influenza has resulted in between 9 million – 45 million illnesses, between 140,000 – 810,000 hospitalizations and between 12,000 – 61,000 deaths annually since 2010.

Covid19 "killed" 37k people with little standards to prove a death was due to Covid.

Covid deaths were about half of the pneumonia deaths during the same period.

I'm pretty sure that 37k is less than 61k.

I can't believe Eric Holder was right when he called us a nation of cowards. The Swedes go and defend democracy, and the biggest, baddest democracy tucks its tail and runs, meanwhile the governors do their best Stasi impression. This is not a good look at all for the United States. Russia and China are laughing now at America's "claim" of democracy,

"Like that time you arrested someone for taking a kid to a park. That democracy?" We're now the laughing stock at the UN!

Just how is social distancing et al going to have results that are " absolutely catestrophic, unlike any depression we've seen before"?

And government does indeed give back emergency powers, unless you know something we don't having saved all those rationing stamps from WWII.

Ironic because you then ran away from the FACTS as fast you could!

You began with a FALLACIOUS comparison trying to EQUATE 520 weeks to just 5 weeks!

The HIGHEST number of Flu deaths has been 61,000 over an ENTIRE SEASON!

There have been 67,000+ deaths from Covid19 in just 5 weeks and the death toll is clocking around 2,000 per DAY!

Your CDC figure is PROVISIONAL and they posted this DISCLAIMER that you disingenuously OMITTED!

Hardly surprising that you FAILED to look at any "factoids" because you are comparing apples to orangutans!

ChiFlu: Bad flu being used to attack Trump

    Sure.

That's why the adjustment was down from 60k to 36k.

    Must be leftist logic.

Are you saying this because 1918 is exactly like 2020? Do the two pandemics have more differences than similarities? Do you believe that there is a lot of conventional wisdom from 1918 that is pretty ludicrous today? Perhaps this time really is different.

I suggest that that you RECHECK the CDC site because it went UP from 37k to just under 40k exactly as PREDICTED because those numbers are PROVISIONAL!

I recommend that you look up the meaning of the term provisional before you continue to LOSE this debate!

The viruses are different but the reactionary denialism of the science is virtually identical IMO.
