ya there should be two categories, electric is very different than acoustic, acoustic being the more difficult instrument...my son plays classical and electric, the classical lessons have made him better technically than when he played electric only...acoustically the best I've seen in person is Leona Boyd...

I like Santana, but his concert sucked...George Harrison was great as was Klaus Voormann

I'm an amateur jazz musician - Steve Vai has formidable musical knowledge, even compared to post-bop artists lol.

Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Chet Atkins, Les Paul, Duane Allman, Jimi Hendrix, Joao Gilberto, Django Reinhardt. Loads of good choices.

Pat Metheny by miles. This guy has been on the cutting edge of guitar innovation for decades. Not to mention he has won 20 Grammies (ranked 8th), his groups has won 10 (ranked 5th), has won more consecutive grammies than anyone, and more grammies in different categories than anyone. The guy is a monster player.

I'm a huge Joe Pass fan. He was a marvel.

I have a very good friend I've been gigging with, we've know
each other for years, who was a pupil of Barney Kessel who
was a pupil of Charlie Christian. In fact we had a gig last
    Sunday, 6.29.

Not to be a nitpicker but it's Hendrix... okay I'm being a nitpicker.

I love your list. They were my faves at one point. I'm a huge
    Gilmore fan (Pink)

I believe Hendrix and Santana are heads over heels of the other
players you mentioned who are heads over heels above most
    "rock" players.

Have you listened to Wes Montgomery? Joe Pass?
Django Reinhardt? Charlie Christian? They play in a
    different universe.

I saw Joe Pass back in the early ‘80s at Blues Alley. He walked in the door with his guitar in hand and headed straight for the bar. Me being a young whipper-snapper guitar player I had to go talk to him. I simply told him it was an honor to meet him. He snided “kid, leave me alone, I’m having a drink”.

    What do you play?

My favorite guitar player is a guy from Plano Texas and his name is Anson Funderburgh.
I have had the honor and privilege to have shared the stage w/ him and tour the world for the last 12 years.
Just had an amazing show w/ him last Saturday.

Technically not the best, and definitely not the fastest, but I've always liked David Gilmour. Says more with a phrase than anybody. For speed and technique, John Petrucci.
