North Korea is not a socialist state. Not at all. And yes, most developed countries are a mixture of capitalism and socialism, which is a good thing.

Yes indeed North Korea is socialist.... And no, a mixture of socialism and capitalism is NOT good....

You eat the fish YOU catch, I eat the fish I catch, and if I feel you need to eat I will share - but it is up to ME not YOU or some (*)(*)(*)(*)ing government.

You socialists just want something for nothing.... IMO, you don't care about anyone but yourself while you pretend to care about others or use others in need to get something for free for yourself...

This is not "my philosophy" as you errantly call it. I'm not stating an opinion, I'm stating a macroeconomic fact: When wages rise, prices rise. And those at the bottom will always be at the bottom, no matter how high you set the minimum wage. The only way they will get off the bottom is to increase the real value of their labor. This is generally accomplished by attaining a skill.

HR 1010 has been thrown all over Capitol Hill for years and fails to materialize. Many states have mandated higher minimum wage. I've looked all over for historical examples of reducing poverty by raising minimum wage. I haven't found one yet.
Raising minimum wage would also bump a lot of folks over the financial criteria for government assistance or reduce benefits.
After so much talk about, I'm curious about what will happen. Theories about that are all over the place. Revamping public education in my opinion would be the obvious starting point. But the Teacher Union makes that almost impossible.
Let's give $10 a try and see if it works!

we can always think it out.

Raise minimum wages - Costs of small businesses go up and costs of corporations as well.

Of course with higher minimum wages the employees can afford more things to buy so the small businesses get some of the money back but they will have to compete with the corporations for the market. As proven by wall mart the corporations will most likely win

We then have to protect small businesses maybe a tax credit for each person they employ. The extra sales tax or income tax the minimum wagers contribute can pay for this. So small businesses now have a fighting chance against corporations.

Corporations of course attempt to outsource everything in protest and to beat the small businesses. Now the US is not some third rate country. Apple is already producing less Iphones because of reduced demand so these companies do want the american market. China is in a slowdown and the masses really do not have the money to buy luxury products so you introduce protectionist clauses so that companies that stay and benefit the local economies get reward and beat the outsourcers.

Problem solved :) If at any point the math doesnt work out just build one less carrier.

This reflects a lack of knowledge of the business plan which is not "carved in stone" but instead is dynamic under constant review and revision. The business plan includes all of the costs, including labor, as well as the gross revenue required for the enterprise but it's much more in depth than that. It defines the actual tasks (and manhours) required necessary for the enterprise and exactly what needs to be done to generate the gross revenue necessary to fund all of the expenditures plus providing a profit for the enterprise.

If any cost increases then obviously it affects what the gross revenue needs to be to accomodate the increased cost. If any cost increases the best way to accomodate it is to increase the gross sales and that's always something that can be done. Take McDonalds for example. Recently it reduced it's existing "menu" and added all-day breakfast and that increased gross revenue by 6%. This didn't change the employment numbers or compensation but did assign new tasks to the employees to provide the breakfast selections being offered all day.

The real deal when it comes to the employee and labor compensation costs is the tasks being assigned to generate revenue. We can compare competing enterprises where success and failure can be measured and it doesn't come down to employee compensation. I've used the example of Dick's Drive-in in the Seattle area and McDonalds that are both hamburger stands. Dick's is highly successful with employee compensation basically double what the McDonalds down the street offers and serves a quality product equitable to McDonalds. I won't go into the different business models and business plans they're using because it's enough to know that Dick's provides basically double the compensation and is highly successful.

The problem is that most business managers and owners are really very poorly qualified when it comes to the business model and business plan. The reason that four out of five new start-up companies fail within five years is because the owners don't have a viable business plan. There's no other reason for this high failure rate because if they had a viable business plan they wouldn't fail.

Wouldn't inflation happen if everyone had skilled jobs too? I look at places where the tech boom has happened and their cost of living, especially real estate, has gone through the roof.

By the logic of the OP we would all be better off if everyone, skilled and unskilled, made a lower wage.

Two facts that are often ignored.

Increasing the minimum wage does not provide any competitive advantage or disadvantage to any enterprise because it applies equally to all enterprises.

Increasing the minimum wage doesn't result in "outsourcing" because overwhelmingly this relates to service sector jobs that can't be outsourced to foreign countries.

You are correct, illegals are uneffected by minimum wage because they are not covered under labor laws. Raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour and watch companies hire more illegals at lesser pay....like they do now.

Actually the "illegals" are covered by the minimum wage laws but the employers know that the "illegal" can't report violations for fear of deportation. It's the US employers that are required to comply with the labor and wage laws and it's the employers that are the "illegals" when they don't do so.

Of course that will change if President Obama wins his arguments before the US Supreme Court related to deferred deportation of over 4 million "illegal" (undocumented) aliens where they will be allowed to legally work pending future deportation proceeding because they these workers could turn their "illegal" employers in to the government without fear of deportation.

Well if these folks want a survivable wage then you better keep out illegal competition that undermines them. Otherwise raising the minimum wage is meaningless. Why make something mandatory when it can be easily undermined?

Thanks for proving my point. That is an excellent description of the situation. But the truth is any foreign national is legally required to have permission to work in the US so both are illegal.

It is not a business owners fault, that a person has not become successful.

Agreed, it's kind of hard to understand how the economy works, when a person doesn't understand how a business works.

Because they don't understand economics. They are following the lead by the marxist statists. If they opened their minds they could see that fewer regulations would allow them to use their brains to make as much money as they wanted, rather than be a slave to the state.

A better alternative is to eliminate the minimum wage and subsidize the poorest entry level workers. There are countless jobs that would be done if individuals and small businesses could afford the labor. How large is the now idle workforce? 90 million?

Getting those workers back to work should be the highest priority - not the minimum wage.

The regulatory system protects big business from grand jury investigations, and stifles competition.

Thank you all for supporting legislation to solve for capitalism's natural rate of unemployment and simple poverty on an at-will basis in our Republic.
