Jealous of people with advanced degrees? Get one yourself, and stop whining.

I find this thread fascinating. A ton of people came to the OP insisting that degrees are important for the hiring process but they never really gave a reason. I've never been big on buying the whole discrimination card but this time it is relevant. The best answer I have seen it "it thins the applicant pool". I mean, surely skin color, or something similar will do the same?

Good point. People please share exactly why they are important to the hiring process.

It's even worse. Many larger employers use software to scan applications before any human sees them, and the programs are written to kick out those without degrees in the fields wanted, calculate the number of jobs held and over how many years to provide guesstimates of the approximate age of the applicant and kick out those over 50 or 55, scan addresses to check for neighborhoods lived in to kick out "those that might be undesirable (blacks, latinos, gays and lesbians)", etc. only after that preliminary computerized scan do real humans look at the survivors, and look for candidates for interviews.

And PA requires teachers to obtain a Master's degree within 5 years of beginning their teaching career, as do many other states.

Yeah they call it continuing education, but they wont hire teachers with a masters degree now because they cost too much.

I have a Masters degree in Business Administration from the University of Missouri - St. Louis. It doesn't help in my current occupation, but with a combination of the Post 9/11 GI BIll and tuition being waived by the University itself, 81.8% of the cost was defrayed leaving me with about $3,500 out of pocket tuition expenses. I may never use it, but I have it. It looks nice on the wall and the price was too good to pass up.
