Why does the right persist in trying to paint NYC as crime ridden?

    After COVID and the existential crisis that struck NYC (remember it got the early brunt of infections and death before anyone knew anything about this pandemic) life is slowly coming back to normal in NYC. And after a big crime increase in 2021, and a smaller one in 2022, early numbers indicate that crime is dropping. New York City has been one of the safest big cities in the nation for 25 years now, and continues to be an incredibly safe place over all. If you compare the homicide rate of NYC compared to, let's say....Florida or Texas, you will find that NYC is waaaay safer.
    And yet the republicans, for obviously purely political, emotional reasons, keep on depicting NYC as crime ridden hell hole. I remember when republicans were lauding Mayor Giuliani because crime had been eradicated in NYC (though honestly, crime went down in the US precipitously everywhere during that time). Do you all not know that crime has been below what was regarded as the summum of safety EVERY YEAR since then?
    Now there really was a sharp spike in the last two years. And that is seriously worrisome. Though the most recent info indicates that it is going down, one can't make light of that fact.
    But please: look at actual info rather than just parroting what your MTG, Santos, Boeberts and Jordans have to say. It just makes you look ill informed.
    New York is an incredibly safe place.
    Thank you
    That is all.

    Not less violence, less cops and less arrest.

    NYPD cops resigning in new year at record-breaking pace — with a 117% jump from 2021 numbers
    https://nypost.com/2023/03/10/nypd-cops-resigning-from-force-in-2023-at-record-pace/

    New York City cops are resigning at a record-breaking pace this year as the NYPD’s alarming exodus continues, according to new data obtained by The Post.
    “The NYPD staffing emergency is approaching the point of no return,” said Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch.

    “Precinct cops are being forced to work an inhumane amount of overtime, including on their days off, while being penalized for minor uniform and administrative infractions.
    “Meanwhile, precincts barely have enough personnel to meet the minimum required to safely answer 911 calls.

    At the current rate, 1,400 cops are projected to resign this year before qualifying for retirement — even more than last year’s record 1,297 early exits.
    New York City’s Finest are also bailing because of what they consider anti-cop politics, woke bail reform policies that make criminal justice a revolving door and low wages.
    “We are losing cops to better pay and benefits in other policing jobs almost every day,” said Lynch, who reps 22,000 uniformed officers

    In addition to the hordes resigning so far this year, the NYPD has already seen 262 cops retire over the first two months of 2023, a 3% uptick from the 255 for the same period last year and a 7% increase from the 245 who retired in January and February 2021

    NYPD data shows every crime category except for murders and shootings is up over the past two years.

    “At this rate, keeping everyone safe will be an Herculean task,” said Joseph Giacalone, a retired NYPD sergeant and adjunct professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in Manhattan.

    “The only people that are happy are the cop haters, activists and defunders.”

    Please show us.....It will be interesting how you can compare a CITY to 2 different STATES.

    Yes, NYC is not a high crime city, but lot of people THINK it is because that's what they hear in the media of their choice. Americans are horribly misinformed, and to make matters worse the misinformed come to the social media to pass on the misinformation to others.

    It's a little thing called "per capita". For every 100000 people, there are x number of murders. Florida and Texas as a whole have more murders per 100 000 people than NYC. For that matter, New York State has less murders per capita than Florida and Texas. By a lot. Was pretty sure that if I compared NYC crime rate to any other big city, the rejoinder would be "yeah, but that is a democratic city". Per capita allows one to compare unequal things. You have more chances of being murdered in Florida and Texas than in New York State or NYC. That's just a fact.

    Here are the top 10 cities ranked by crime rate according to one source. New York is not on the list.

    1. St. Louis, Missouri
    2. Jackson, Mississippi
    3. Detroit, Michigan
    4. New Orleans, Louisiana
    5. Baltimore, Maryland
    6. Memphis, Tennessee
    7. Cleveland, Ohio
    8. Baton Rouge, Louisiana
    9. Kansas City, Missouri
    10. Shreveport, Louisiana

    If you are a rural dweller like me who enjoys an immeasurably small crime rate, then the crime rates in all cities is unacceptable, including that of New York. It is just a matter of perspective, I think.

    NYC crime rate is lower than every major Florida city,
    Miami = 3.6
    Orlando = 4.4
    Tampa = 2.5
    Ft Lauderdale = 3.2
    JAX = 2.8

    New York City = 1.4

    And DeSantis is praised for "low crime Florida" and NY is demonized as "high crime hell hole". Political propaganda at its best and people just inhale it. Not only is NYC crime much lower than Florida, its also declining further, especially violent crime.

    Consider this:
    "Overall index crime was driven down by 5.7% in July 2023 (11,165 v. 11,838) compared to the same period a year ago. New York City saw a drop in five of the seven index crime categories in July 2023, including a 35.3% reduction in homicide, a 17.3% drop in rape (124 v. 150), a 13.6% decline in robbery (1,513 v. 1,752), and a 17.6% decline in burglary (1,120 v. 1,360). Hate crimes citywide declined by approximately 8% (49 v. 53) compared to last year."

    Because it serves the purposes of the Right to continue to do what it has always done. Stoke fear, anger, intolerance, and to assign blame for all the country's ills to Dems. Or brown and black people, criminals, gays, immigrants, religious minorities,......."the other." IOW, to identify an enemy in order to give the minions someone or something to be responsible for whatever they happen to be frustrated or mad about. You know............the VERMIN.

    Its not on the Top-10 list, because it sits at spot #95, so it barely makes the Top-100 list.

    The link verifies how the crime stats are falsely recorded.
    They don't have less crime. They have less arrest. Which make up those stats.

    Neither of your links say that. And your second link shows that most crimes have reduced this year compared to the previous two years, just like explained in the OP

    The link verifies the historical amount of NYPD officers leaving over the last 3 years.
    The post was meant for those who could reasonably asses the common sense fallout of thousands of NYPD officers quitting their jobs.
    And what that leads too.

    The OP is nothing to do with officers leaving no matter how much you want it to be!

    Like I said, for those who could reasonably asses the common sense fallout.
    Apparently you can't equate thousands of NYPD officers quitting to less arrest.
    Most like yourself are more driven by a headline than the complete picture.
    Oh well.

    Because quite literally, they don't know what they are talking about. Crime in any major urban area, including NYC is not as bad as the 1970s, 80s or even 90s. But people like to stereotype based on the past, not on today's reality.

    Lol. The number of officers has decreased and crime rate has decreased too. You just cannot accept that crime had dropped in New York. Your link shows crime complaints, not, arrests or convictions. Unlike you, I read past the headlines and not post links that cause me to score own goals

    35% reduction in murders.....You think they don't record murders......? That's a new one. LOL

    Of course violent crime is recorded, and prosecuted. You are proving the points being made here that people THINK crime there is high, even when its not.

    I think the reason New York City is and likely always will be seen as crime ridden is movies etc. Spiderman is there fighting crime.

    You could make New York the safest city on earth and it will still have some of this image.

    Actually its down 11% but your marked propensity for embellishing numbers is quite relevant.
    If you have less cops, you have less arrest. Especially when you are missing thousands.
    Most can figure that out pretty easy.

    So now were double downing? lol You spend much too much time in your media training.
    If you're missing thousands of officers, you think everyone just picks up the slack?
    Pretty amazing
