The topic of euthanasia has been thrown around for years and nothing much has become of it.

Why not legalize euthanasia??? And while we're at it, legalize death for any reason???

Why not go in all the way?

I'm open to hearing arguments on all sides for this.

On one hand, if someone is asking someone they trust to help them pass due to some poor health condition or feeling of loneliness that won't improve, that's one thing and I believe it should be done as a secret as in no laws should address euthanasia at all.

On the other hand, it could be used as a tool for some who would use it to get rid of a person they felt was a burden or some other nefarious motive so we wouldn't want a law to make vulnerable people more vulnerable.

The legalize death line made me think of the "Purge" movies.

Make no mistake, if death is legalized there would be pressure for people who are a burden to kill themselves. That's just the nature of the beast.

This isn't a gladiator event match. Legalized death doesn't mean any kind of blood sports.

I was surprised to learn, recently, that Canada has passed a bill allowing for assisted dying. And I think it's an amazingly big step.

I think I should be able to decide when I die, if I become terminal I should be able to make the choice to end it, it's not the government place to force me to suffer for no valid reason

There are two issues, euthanasia and what we call suicide.

While euthanasia would, perhaps, be involved in a clinical setting, pain or disease; Legalized killing would perhaps best be described as suicide.

I don't know, but I would imagine that euthanasia would be more popular than suicide, but I would think that suicide would be less welcome, due to religious reasons. You know, some say it's a sin to take your own life. But I don't believe that. Sometimes death is the easy way out, and if someone is out to die well they will find a way anyway. Why not have a painless way out?

    A very good question actually.

Some legal and moral hurdles, but it can certainly be supported with sound arguments.

Yeah; the guidelines would need to be carefully established to protect the vulnerable.

But some countries permit it now.

What's stopping you again? Are people actually worried about being arrested after drinking a gallon of bleach?

I think the idea would be to allow people to pass safely sans bleach, and with prior interventions which could potentially address problems pushing them toward extreme acts which may have alternative solutions.

We should at least decriminalize suidide. In some states, if someone attempts suicide, they are charged with a crime. That's completely stupid.

If assisted suicide for any reason was a thing it would sure take a valuable tool away from the anti gun crowd!

Deep subject. If I feel the need to euthanize myself my decision or application of the decision sure won’t have anything to do with what the government thinks or says about the issue.

Like has been stated, suicide and euthanasia are entirely different subjects. I suppose I’m pro euthanasia but anti suicide. Generally speaking. Exceptions to both.

I’ve unfortunately had a lot of experience with euthanasia in the animal kingdom. It’s hard and takes an emotional toll on me. It has a profound effect on people who aren’t sociopaths. I can’t imagine the ramifications in humans. Sociopaths and other nuts would be drawn to the industry, that would be a danger. Especially if suicide was included.

I think there's a way to do it, and sophisticated, compassionate cultures should definitely offer this option, but like Medicare for ALL, it has to be set up properly.

Which is exactlyt he reason I say not know but hell no. We are already way to far down the road to whatever is convenient at the moment for my taste, and that is a giant step too damn far.

Sadly, I don't think we're anywhere near evolved enough in this country for something so sophisticated & compassionate. :(

Just include it in the lexicon of late term abortion rights.

You are correct - they are VERY different issues.

With respect to euthanasia, I believe that the healthcare workers who are empowered to facilitate the process would welcome the ability to put a person out of terrible pain and suffering - much like veterinarians.

In terminal cases why make people suffer?

My nan had a very bad stroke she spent 3 months in hospital unable to move more than an eyelid. It haunts me almost 20 years later, I know I wouldn't want to live like that.

Barbara Boxer said the right to an abortion ends when the mother takes the baby home from the hospital. So if the mother and child are still in the hospital 3 or 4 days after birth (they they haven't gone home yet), performing an "abortion" is still a viable option at that point according to Barbara Boxer.

I'm all for euthanasia. And if I want to euthanize someone else, I should be allowed to do it.

I agree with you for the most part on health care workers. There are some that could handle euthanasia without psychological effects. I believe it would be similar to combat veterans and ptsd. There would be a spectrum.

Of course my experience is anecdotal, but I thought as a young man the effect euthanizing animals had on me would lessen with time and exposure to multiple instances. A desensitization if you will.

Surprisingly to me the opposite is true. I’m friendly enough with a handful of veterinarians to discuss this issue with candidly and with one exception they feel similar to me.

My wife’s cousin worked as a hit man for a farrowing operation (swine). He was what people consider to be a pretty “hard” insensitive type guy. He lasted a little over a year.

Unless you have experienced the emotions I don’t think they can be described. There is an aspect of relief from knowing you have prevented suffering but that is only a small part for me. I suppose one’s reaction is based partly on what value they believe life has and why.

One aspect of euthanasia I think is important is for individuals to work out in their minds when the time is right. I don’t think the motivation should be purely based on ones desire to avoid pain or suffering. I believe the individual should consider the feelings of and his/her responsibility to his/her social network.

My brother is getting heavily involved in hospice care. We discuss these issues so I expect to gain much insight on this subject from him in the future.
