We must not forget that people who are charged with crimes are considered innocent until proven guilty by a court. Punishing the officer prior to that court action goes against a basic tenet of the law. I don't know whether due process is the right reason or not but failing to consider the officer innocent before the trial is certainly a right reason. If cities want to treat a charged employee like a convicted one, they need to make it an agreement at the time of employment or negotiate it with the union. Such an agreement would probably be considered unconstitutional. Good call on the part of Atlanta.

Strange, I live 30 miles south of Atlanta and never heard of this. But further reading, Garrett Rolfe was reinstated because Atlanta failed to follow the proper legal procedures. Rolfe was immediately put on admin leave. So all this means is Rolfe will receive back pay and be paid while on admin leave. The charges are still pending and Rolfe will still have his day in court, he still faces murder charges. That hasn't change.

This is more a slap on the wrist to the city of Atlanta for not following the proper legal procedures prior to his dismissal. Interesting on how something can be national news, yet locally, if 30 miles south of Atlanta is considered locally, not to have heard a thing about it. This really is no big thing other than the board telling Atlanta to follow the proper legal procedures.
