Yemen Girl Who Turned World’s Eyes to Famine Is Dead - (Khashoggi who?)

CAIRO — A haunted look in the eyes of Amal Hussain, an emaciated 7-year-old lying silently on a hospital bed in northern Yemen, seemed to sum up the dire circumstances of her war-torn country.

A searing portrait of the starving girl published in The New York Times last week drew an impassioned response from readers. They expressed heartbreak. They offered money for her family. They wrote in to ask if she was getting better.

On Thursday, Amal’s family said she had died at a ragged refugee camp four miles from the hospital.

“My heart is broken,” said her mother, Mariam Ali, who wept during a phone interview. “Amal was always smiling. Now I’m worried for my other children.”



Last week, the NY Times did a story about the humanitarian crisis in Yemen. In that story, they focused on this little girl 7 year old Amal, who is just one casualty of starvation. She died a week after their article was published. The U.S. is supporting the Saudis who have waged war against this poorest of poor countries, Yemen. This is a man-made humanitarian catastrophe that we're allowing by supporting Saudi Arabia. The sad thing is that the USA has the power to stop it. The ongoing war in Yemen, has displaced millions of people and is far more complex than a Sunni-Shia conflict. For three years, Yemen, the Arab world's poorest country, has been wracked by a bloody war between the Houthi rebels and supporters of Yemen's internationally recognized government.

Here's my point. The news is no longer interested in what happened to Jamal Khashoggi. The horrible news of his murder by the Saudis was enough to hold the interest of Americans for a brief time. Khashoggi was strangled, injected with poison, murdered and chopped up in pieces. Who was responsible? The Saudis have already admitted responsibility. What is the U.S. doing to stop this autocratic government from murdering at will and starving 1.8 million people in Yemen? Not a damned thing. The U.S. is too involved worrying about the 'invasion of rock-throwing' immigrants seeking asylum. The reason we look the other way is because Saudi Arabia represents money in the pockets of rich men like Trump and Jared Kushner and scores of other wealthy men who serve themselves without a care in the world for 7 year old girls like Amal. If there was a monetary motivation to accept immigrants seeking amnesty in the U.S., we would be openly welcoming them. But they have no money to put in Kushners pocket or invest in Trump's hotels.

 

It's very sad, but the USA aren't world police. What happens in Yemen is none of USA business, excepted if your masochistic enough to intervene.

Even if it's not simply a shia/sunni war, it's an important part of this war. This war last since Muhammed death, it will last for still a few centuries, and nobody will be able to stop that.

The problem of Kashoggi was the fact he was an american citizen, and the US can't let a foreign country kill it's own citizen without a payback.

 

The US has learned repeatedly that 'no good deed goes unpunished'. If they ever helped these people the left would soon be claiming they 'interfered', and all problems after that will be the fault of the USA.

 

Agree the US is not the World Police. We have no business butting into someone else's war. But Kashoggi was not an American Citizen.

 

Well they sure as hell aren't going to ally with Iran, Syria and Palestine.

Personally I think it's time to bring the military back to defend the homeland. Let the Middle East do as the Middle East wants.

 

What "good deed" are you talking about? Would it be selling the Saudis the weapons to wage this war, refueling their jets in mid-air, or providing targeting info to them that has brought Yemen to the point of collapse?

 

How about saving the world from Communism, Nazism and Fascism? Shouldn't that count for something?

 

And that has what to do with Yemen? Does that negate the starving people, the diseases running rampant and the innocents that have been bombed as a result of our support of the Saudis?

The USA is complicit. They are selling the Saudi's weapons so they can do this to the people of Jemen.
The USA knows it, and has no problems with making money so civilians can be starved to death with their weapons.

 

What's next ? Put in jail knives seller for any knife attack ? Would those people suffer less if they end to be killed with russian, turkish, german or chinese weapons ? No, they would die anyway.

Yes, in the most ideal of the world, everybody would ostracise both Saudi Arabia and Iran for their roles in that bloody war, but we're not living in this world.

Most of those people on this forum are westerners, we can't even understand the arab way of thinking. Why should we care of something we can't understand beside all the human right violations ?

I never doubted of that. And ? There is no world police and having good intentions isn't a solution. So either you have a viable political solution to offer and we could discuss of that, either you don't have any solutions and it's just madness to try to do anything.

We have made it our business. We are on the same side of the war as the Saudi's in Yemen - joined at the hip.

The humanitarian crisis in Yemen has been going on for years - and has gotten very little attention in the MSM. The war has not been much covered either - despite the fact that we are involved in this war.

If it was Russia, or China, or Iran or Syria or some other "enemy" the Establishment propaganda pundits would be crying bloody murder - war crimes and crimes against humanity of the highest order, and so on.

Once again we find our selves on the same side as Islamist extremism and "Al Qaeda".

 

Point remains that currently the US is complicit of starving civilians to death, by making money to make that happen.

Any time the US helps any country they are blamed for interference, policing the world, and so on. If Saudi Arabia bombs anyone it's the fault of SA, not the Americans. But your posts serve as an excellent Pavlovian example of the consequence of 'good deeds'.

 

Are there no neighboring countries prepared to help these people? What about the generosity of Muslims? Mecca seems very close.

 

You are supplying the weapons and even technical support for the bombing and death in the poorest of nations in the world. You are literally exporting death to Yemen with you blanket support of the Wahhabi kingdom and it's reign of death.

 

It's all 'Islamic extremism' in that part of the world and the free world should stay well clear. According to the Leftists the only bad guys in the area are the Israelis, while they stay silent about human rights, Gay rights, women's rights, etc. in Muslim run countries.
