Fascinating that this has at least two threads dedicated to it. Impressive level of groupthink & a remninder of how hostile the right wing information economy is to Ukraine.

 

Finland? Poland? The Baltic states? All invaded by Russia during WW2, none of them on the 'one team' at the time. I get that conservatives need to reduce everything to binaries, but WW2 is a bit more complicated than that. I realize you can't understand that, but its still worth pointing out.

Are you incapable of reading past the RW propaganda headline? The guy who invited the Nazi to the House apologized and later resigned over the mistake. There are no Nazi sympathizers here, no matter how much RW extremist media wants to paint it that way.

Nope. It only shows how ignorant people in general and the left in particular about history. If you opposed the Russians in World War II, you were in the German Army. You were not “a Ukrainian freedom fighter.” The Russians were our Allies during World War II. The break came soon after the war ended.

 

Poland was an ally. They had a government in exile in England. The Russians set up a puppet government after the war.

I would say that depends on if you are referring to the period before, or after the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact was broken. In case you do not know, Germany and the Soviet Union agreed to divide Eastern Europe into spheres of influence, which was an agreement signed in Moscow in 1939 between the two powers. This agreement is what ultimately lead to Russia's military occupation of western Ukraine that same year. The pact between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany was broken in June of 1941. As Americans we often think of WWII as beginning in December of 1941, but the fact of the matter is the war began years before we got involved, and for the majority of that period before we were involved, the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany were on the same side.

As for the recent event in the Canadian parliament, while it is disturbing to see someone from the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division being honored, it was not brought to light that he served in that division until later.

 

EXCEPT: At the time the "Ovation" was given, Hunka's Nazi ties were not generally known...
Thus, Nobody was "celebrating nazism"...
It was AFTER the fact that the Nazi connection was revealed.
So? Give everybody a break with that sort of BS...

It is inconceivable that Hunka's SS association was not known. He was brought to Parliament to be honored as a Ukrainian veteran. Does anybody really think no one asked what unit he served with? With that lone information, a bare-bones vetting would have revealed his unit's association with atrocities against Polish civilians (the Huta Pieniacka massacre, in which they burned 500 to 1,000 Polish villagers alive). It's not like this guy tried to keep it a secret. He ran a blog for himself and his comrades!

Also, it takes a special kind of stupid to stand up and cheer after he's hailed as a "Ukrainian hero, and a Canadian hero" for fighting Russians while, in WW2, the Russians were our allies.

The Speaker's resignation doesn't get Trudeau off the hook, either. He was aware of this guy before he was introduced on the floor of Parliament. Hunka's grand-daughter took a photo of Trudeau and Zelensky with her grandfather beforehand.
