And there it is folks. It was just a matter of time. The filibuster is now racist.

Can leftists EVER NOT refer to something that hinders them or disagrees with them as "racist"? This is why the word holds no actual value anymore. Why people are shrugging when they are called "racist". The only ones that thinks it still has power are leftists.

The filibuster was racist from the beginning. It never has had any other purpose from the beginning other than to block Civil Rights reforms.

Has it been used to block Civil Rights reforms? Sure. :shrug: But if you think that is why it started, or why it exists, then you are seriously lacking in historical knowledge and understanding of that knowledge for what little you do know.

 

The best government is the least government. The House can pass bills with majority rule but when they are sent to the Senate it is the obligation of the Senators to deliberate and slow things down. It is not racial, even though it could be, but one tool for the opposing party to present their side of the case in the hopes of persuading public opinion. With the "toxic" power grab the socialists are trying to put in place at present I pray the Filibuster stays in place. It has worked both ways and the result is we don't have drastic changes every four years. (Unless you count the folly of the back and forth Executive Orders of the last three Presidents).

 

The best government is the most just one. Government should change every 4 years or even more frequently if it has become unjust and oppressive. The filibuster has never been used for any good purpose but has always been a tool by which Republicans have sought to extend and strengthen their onerous tyranny over all minority races. It deserves to be swept away and never used again

 

The filibuster is an anti-democratic concept, which can be (and has been) used for racist purposes, but it's not racist by design.

What Al was trying to say is that supporting the filibuster to prevent S1 from receiving an open vote in the Senate would be a continuation of the GOP's completely understandable fear of non-white voters, along with a large and growing share of white voters.

Hmm.. so when democrats filibustered like most legislation during the Trump administration, they weren't racist? But now it is? When democrats harvest unasked for ballots by the hundreds of thousand, don't you suppose that they intend to be racist when they disenfranchise all the legitimate voters because of it? Perhaps Al is making money from the perspective of black voters that they are being oppressed and he gets rich. Who is fearful again of non white voters? Democrats must be since they are trying so hard to actively create process that disenfranchises them.

 

Democrats are constantly expressing racial hate in their rhetoric and programs. Screw the senate democrats. There party is basically the Klan at this point, except they burn peoples businesses, churches, and synagogues cause they're upset the group committed the most murders and hate crimes over the last three years is having difficulties with law enforcement.

Let's filibuster in protest of their racial hatred.

The filibuster should stay, but not in its current form.

It should not be as simple as it is now. It should revert to back an act that requires time and effort and is not indefinite. The minority party should have a way to make their views known and to slow the progress of bills they do not agree with. But they should not be able to stop it permanently.

In today's political climate where compromise and bi-partisanship are seen as weakness and will get people primaired it is not longer a valid tool in its current form.

That's all a common-sense filibuster reform should do... The minority will have some FIXED amount of time (I'd go 24 consec hours myself) to put on a show. They can juggle, read the last remaining Dr. Seuss book in print, sing-a-long from The Best of Cher...... or, heavens forbid, bring up alternatives/amendments to the bill being discussed...

I really don't care, as long as 41 of em are on the floor for the entire 24 hours.

That is a little outdated. The first filibuster was in 1837. The whole idea of a filibuster was created by accident in 1806.

The problem today is the rule of cloture to kill a filibuster and the lack of needing a talking filibuster which made the whole thing incredibly easy. That all happened in the 1970's and is nothing like the Founding Fathers envisioned.

You used to have at least 40% of the Senators on the floor and a constantly speaking Senator to hold up legislation. Now a single Senator can hold up legislation and none of the other supporters of the filibuster have to be present and the one Senator just has to make a single motion.

All because VP Aaron Burr thought that a rule to close debate was silly.

 

LOL... nice misread... the GOP is fearful (probably more so) of educated voters than non-white voters.... you can still fool plenty of non-white voters, but much harder (although not impossible) to fool the truly educated...

As for fooling folks, when the gun control measures require folks to carry insurance, whom do you suspect that will impact the most? certainly not me. Is that what you fear? I've said it many times, racism only exists in this country because politicians keep it going. This is why they keep it going, so they can use it as leverage to gain political power.
Personally, I don't like the filibuster. I think it should go away, and was never intended to be part of the process. However, exploiting the problem of racism that politicians themselves perpetuate to make this change, or any political change, is beyond disgusting.
