In other words you know your argument made no sense. Hell, most slave owners probably did not even fight. The rich rarely fight in wars.

 

You need to word yourself more carefully. Your post in facts shifts blame away from slavers, claiming that the blame for some degree of how violent they were can be shifted away from them.

 

And the reason a war is fought is not because of what grunts on the front line think.

 

That's because they fight better for a noble cause. They may not fight for the actual cause.

Even that may usually just be something they tell themselves. Evidence suggests that most soldiers fire their guns to avoid embarrassment. They do it to avoid the disdain of the person on their left shoulder and the person on their right shoulder.

But yes- from the Union perspective the war was fought to preserve the Union. From the Confederacy's perspective, the war was fought to preserve the right to own slaves.

The individual Southern soldier fought for his state. The officers often fought to preserve both their states and their property- the property owners were quite aware that if they lost the war they would likely lose not only their slaves but woud not be able to maintain the plantations.

You made the distinction between troops and states as to why the war was fought- so did I.

The Confederate States attempted to secede to preserve their legal right to own slaves. That is clear from the statements made by Southern politicians prior to the election of Lincoln, and the original Secession statement.

The Federal Government fought to keep the entire Union together.

If the South had not succeeded, Slavery probably would have ended with the Federal government eventually outlawing it and paying compensation to the owners- this was what Britain had done when it outlawed slavery.

Federal soldiers fought mainly because they were told to, and in support of their own States. Southern soldiers fought to defend their own homes states.

Confederate officers- who especially at the beginning of the war- primarily came from wealthy slave owning families- fought for their states but also to preserve their status and fortunes- and slave property.

The only links you provided were websites that show "Southern support" (i.e. support of slavery). All those do is get you a larger debate from the moral people reading this thread.
However, we gave you links, and you clearly didn't click on them because you're afraid they will lead you to proof that you are WRONG.

The South rejoined America. The North won whether you like it or not, wopper. Whining and crying about how terrible the North was isn't going to change that.

The South started the war.

The North fought to "preserve the Union" i.e. stop the South from seceding. the South wanted to secede for "state's right" i.e. the right to own another person if they see fit.

we should cut them some slack. If it is easier for them to call it the War of Northern Aggression than it is to admit to a traitor in the family, so be it.

I wouldn't want to admit to it either.

 

it's easier to call it the Civil War than to admit that there is a murder, rapist or arsonist in the family.

 

I actually feel pretty much the same way. Every person who was a slave is long dead- I am against Reparations, though I was in favor of the U.S. acknowledging how wrong Slavery was.

However- perfectly legitimate to bring up Jim Crow laws- those are within living history- heck they were in effect during my life time.
