‘Just Shocked’: Mother of Vermont Suspect in Palestinian Student Shooting Speaks Out'

Reed said that Eaton had previously struggled with depression and other mental health issues but had been “in such a good mood” when she saw him on Thanksgiving. She said her son, who has bounced around different jobs and previously was an “assistant to a financial officer,” was “totally normal” on Thursday and that the family had a great holiday together. It is not immediately clear if Eaton had a gun.

“It was the best Thanksgiving we had in years,” Eaton’s mother said. “We were all together.”
During the family dinner, Reed said that Eaton did not mention the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas. She added, however, that her son is a “very religious person” who connects with different religious figures and often reads the Bible.

“He, like all of us, thinks the world is a mess,” Reed said. “He is a spiritual person.”

At the end of the family celebration, Reed said, she gave her son a Christmas tree to start decorating for the holiday. She said she had not spoken to her son since Thursday and assumed he was at home this weekend “decorating his tree.”

Reed said she found out about the shooting early Monday morning when her daughter came over and woke her up. Police say that on Sunday night, a search warrant was executed on Eaton’s residence. Inside, investigators found evidence to believe he was the shooter.

Nonsensical hate, spread by our leaders in support of their power-mongering goals. Anything that divides us is a tool for them to use. Prolonging violence between various groups of people just lines their pockets with wealth, reinforces their political positions with support of those divided, and leads to tragedy like what we have in this shooting, and on a larger scale, the conflict in the middle east. If you dig down far enough, it all comes down to powerful men willing to sacrifice innocent people to achieve their goals. Hamas, Netanyahu, politicians profiting from war, etc...they all perpetuate the cycle of violence, death, fear, and hatred.

People need to see through the ridiculous division that has been force fed into us. A Jew is no different than a Palestinian, and no different than an American, and no different than anyone else from any other walk of life around the world. The division is an illusion. The sooner we all realize that, the sooner we can put an end to all the nonsense.

 

Police had encountered Eaton at the scene of the shooting and detained him.
They then got the search warrant for his residence.


BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - The suspect in a triple-shooting in Burlington over the weekend pleaded not guilty at his arraignment on Monday morning.

Jason Eaton, 48, was arrested Sunday afternoon in the shooting of three Palestinian American students.

On Monday morning, Eaton pleaded not guilty to three charges of attempted murder and was ordered held without bail until his next court appearance, which has not yet been scheduled.'

'Attorneys for Burlington shooting suspect Jason Eaton said they wish a speedy recovery to the three shooting victims.

“We as human beings hope that the people who were shot recover quickly and completely," Margaret Jansch, an attorney for Eaton, said to reporters after his arraignment today.

Jansch and Sarah Varty, attorneys with the Office of the Defender General in Vermont, decline to answer questions about conversations they had with Eaton. They also declined to comment about Eaton's religious affiliation.

When asked about the incident potentially being charged as a hate crime, Jansch said it would be "premature for us to speculate."

When asked about a motive, Jansch said "that’s privileged information."

'Weapons found in suspect Jason Eaton's home allegedly include a pistol, a loaded magazine and pistol ammunition, according to court documents.

A Ruger .380 pistol along with a loaded magazine containing five rounds were found in the top drawer of a dresser in Eaton's bedroom, according to the affidavit of probable cause. Ammunition for a .380 pistol was also found in the same drawer.'

On a YouTube account that appears to belong to Eaton, playlists include videos with titles including “Expose Fauci,” and using brain crystals for “psychic powers.” Videos in the playlists covered a variety of topics such as long Covid, government surveillance and economics. An Instagram account that appears to belong to him shows photos of farm life, cooking and machinery.

An archived version of a Twitter account that appeared to belong to him showed posts about economics and skepticism of Covid vaccines. That account is currently locked. On Reddit, an account that appeared to belong to Eaton posted about agriculture, economics and mental health.'

'Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger called the shooting one of the "most shocking and disturbing events in the city’s history," at a news briefing today.

"Saturday evening shooting of three young Palestinian college students in Burlington on their holiday break is one of the most shocking and disturbing events in the city's history," Weinberger said. The only chance that this wasn't an anti-Palestinian crime-- certainly to all appearances, at least-- would have been if the shooter was himself, a fourth Palestinian (which had seemed doubtful). My point, and my challenge to your own clear Israeli bias-- evident in the assumptions with which you had quickly labelled others, who were not Netanyahu cheerleaders, based on small bits of their rhetoric, and confirmed in your now resisting calling a spade, this which certainly looks like a spade-- is that there are no words that come to mind, which so convincingly signal antipathy, as do bullets.
