How and at what point does patriotism morph into nationalism, which to the left and really to liberals is synonymous with fascism?

My suspicion is that they found, or think they found, something nefarious in the tax returns, and they will pursue him for tax fraud or tax evasion, not having and hiding sex with a hooker.

I think patriotism, in short, is a love for your country of residence. To love a coumtry, you of course have to know what the country stands for and its political system and institutions.

I believe it turns into nationalism when it is irrational and based on nothing but collectivism, statism and a superstitious view of "the nation".

Errr...that makes no sense, but I know that it's futile to ask you to explain it.

That's a fairly ignorant statement from someone who usually makes more rational points (even if I disagree with them). I chock it up to the European irrationality with anything to do with the word nationalism. Simply put, it's recognizing that a nation has both foreign and national interests as a nation. It acts accordingly to those interests. It doesn't mean Hitler or racism or whatever crazy thing Europeans hyperventilate over.

Nationalism always comes with racism or whatever crazy things there are and always carries the capacity to turn into "Hiterlism". If you are going to argue Hitler was not a nationalist, you are the ignorant one.

Nationalism is just blind worship of one's nation of birth. The State is seen as the manifestation of the nation and everything it says, does or legidlates is always "for its people's" best".

    Nationalism sucks.

How does it make no sense? Wallace was a white supremacist and he and Coughlin both wanted dictatorial powers if they were elected.

I think your response perfectly encapsulates the European view (exactly as predicted) and has little bearing with reality. I think you made my point.

I described a silly European view of nationalism, and you parroted it right back at me.

What is your "non-silly" view of it, fam? You don't seriously think nationalism is good, do you?

So, Nationalism - in your opinion - is the "recognition that a nation has both foreign and national interests as a nation and acts accordingly to those interests"? What exactly is "a nation" and who decides what these interests are and how they are to be acted on?

The definition you have given is very incomplete.

What exactly is a nation? Are you serious?

Where did you pull that from? That has nothing to do with the post you quoted. Surely you can understand that.

Oh, you cannot explain it, can you?

I take it you are an admirer of Teddy Roosevelt, right?

Putting "the interests of the nation" over the interests of the individual is very statist and very collectivistic. Moreover, it is a parole that very much goes against everything that America was built on.

You said nationalism "always comes with racism" or something crazy. You might as well say that all patriots are latent fascists.

Um, what? I already identified the difference between Patriotism and Nationalism, so no.

Then pick someone from Trump land. They have experience being prosecuted. They would fit right in with the Gop crowd .

it’s mandatory. You need to have the potential to be indicted to have a chance running for the gop.

The problem is blithely asserting that nationalists are racists. Some are, some are not.

You're confusing ethnic Nationalism and broader conception of Nationalism.

It very easily turns into racism as it rests on the premise that one's own nation and tjereby its oeople holds divine powers and that the interests of the "national tribe" are more important than those of the individual. Want to marry a Mexican? Sorry, "cross-breeding"goes against "the interests of the nation".

"Ethno-Nationalism" is a redundant term and only used by Americans because the American ethnos is not as "genetically self-evident" as in other places.

    Nationalism is disgusting.

Yes, and Patriotism easily turns into Nationalism.

People have been brainwashed into equating nationalism with fascism presumably because fascists are nationalists. Hence "Trump = Hitler", am I right?

Contrast ethnic nationalism with civic nationalism
