Thanks to all the replies and good to see an infusion of humour as well.

Call me weird, but I don't like a picture of a big gun aimed at me while perousing posts.

To those that don't like my avatar, that's fair enough. But at least she's not aiming a fat gun at anyone.

It's a Renaissance painting by John Everett Millias called "The Martyr of Solway":

I like her and I don't mind in the least if others don't.

I don't like guns pointed at me. I am Australian, we don't have a love-thing for guns over here.

Maybe Australians don't like guns, but I've heard your squirrels are armed and dangerous.

Australians are actually one of the most heavily armed Western nations. There is a legally owned firearm here for every 7 people.

How can you take anyone seriously who spends his or her free time on an internet forum? I don't wish to be taken seriously.

There was a poster with a naked woman pointing a gun as his avatar. I found his posts to be more offensive than his avatar, he has been banned. I am less than devastated.

I think he did a great job picking an avatar for your user name. Mine means "Freedom" so I try to make mine fit as close to how I feel more than anything.

I don't feel gun avatars are threatening. I didn't like it when we saw so many ugly ones of Obama and Palin. But that's just me.

Well , I will admit that some avatars are offensive , but what ya gonna do ? [IMG]

I guess the people on PF admin sort of give some lee-way on what we use as an avatar , but I have seen people reprimanded and even temp banned for their choice of avatars or even signature lines , so the mods eventually restore order. [IMG]

My suggestion would be that if you find an avatar offensive , that you report it . . . :ignore: certainly it can be said that we have the right to speak up when something offends us ...

but it's a two edged sword , , , you never know when someone might find your avatar offensive ... [IMG]

My avatar usually tries to represent my ideology. And I think that my actual avatar does it perfectly. And also isn't aggresive, although it looks a bit.

That was the one that prompted this thread.

I agree with you re the offensive posts - and with the avatar on top of that, well, um... good grief.

Not scary so much as wondering why anyone would want an avatar of a big gun aimed at others. Mean? No, more like infantile. Intimidated? No. Just annoyed at how stupid some people are. And also wondering about any young adults with an interest in politics coming to this site to find an avatar with a big gun aimed at them. Because that will really break the ice for young adults wanting to discuss politics. And will set such a fantastic example to young adults starting to find their interest in politics.... by seeing someone's avatar with a big gun aimed at them.

A gun? Fine. Pointing away. Fine. Pointing so that it appears to be aimed at you directly - I personally draw the line there. I find it particularly offensive.

Just in case this may draw others now to post pics of guns pointed so that they appear to be aimed directly at you, then... do what you have to do... and (*)(*)(*)(*) you in advance.

I don't like guns aimed at me, even if it's just a picture.

The metaphor is truly ugly. And base.

Some avatars are neat and others not so neat. Like them or hate them your choice. Report them if they cross the line.

I have been listening to Tool, A Perfect Circle, or Pucifer, essentially once a day, everyday, for the last six months. The common thread between the three groups is Maynard James Keenan, so I decided my avy would be appropriate...... and amusing at the same time.

I actually have my avy framed and hanging above my kitchen sink. LOL
