Flopping is now in Hockey and is famous in basketball as well.... Hell Boxing made an art form of it. - - - Updated - - - "No American whose great-grandfather was born here is watching soccer"... I am one.. right there shows she is wrong.....
Group B (Spain's Group) was relatively balanced with hard hitters like the Netherlands and Chile. The only reason Portugal is out of the tourney is because the US managed not to get spanked as badly against Germany (or Portugals failure to score more goals against Ghana). If it wasn't for that, Portgual would be playing against Belgium, not America. It was pure dumb luck, and the country is acting like they've landed on the moon for the first time. The nation does suck at the game. It could have a better team, if the nation placed more emphasis on the sport. Nigeria and Algeria are both in. I wouldn't go as far as to say they are great. They were the runners up in a group full of med-level teams, aside from the winners of their group.
Individual achievement is not a big factor in soccer. In a real sport, players fumble passes, throw bricks and drop fly balls — all in front of a crowd. When baseball players strike out, they're standing alone at the plate. But there's also individual glory in home runs, touchdowns and slam-dunks. And there is no individual glory in scoring/saving a goal or getting an assist/steal in soccer? Does that mean there is no individual glory in hockey either? If there is no individual glory in soccer, then why do players like Messi and Rinaldo make so much more money, and sell so many more jerseys, and get so much more attention than all the other players? In soccer, the blame is dispersed and almost no one scores anyway. Uh, yea, the blame is always "dispersed" in team sports, whether it's hockey, basketball, lacrosse, football, or soccer. There are no heroes, no losers, no accountability, and no child's fragile self-esteem is bruised. There's a reason perpetually alarmed women are called "soccer moms," not "football moms." Again, disproven by the existence of soccer superstars like Beckham, Rinaldo, and Messi. Do they even have MVPs in soccer? Yes, they do: http://blog.thuuz.com/2014/06/10/10-candidates-to-win-the-2014-fifa-world-cup-golden-ball-mvp/ Everyone just runs up and down the field and, every once in a while, a ball accidentally goes in. That's when we're supposed to go wild. I'm already asleep. Not even worth addressing, but you could say the same about her entire article. In fact, I've already wasted enough time addressing and refuting her mindless trash.
Don't even get me started on pretending to be injured...
Yea, except I'm not a "liberal" and NFL is my favorite sport. It doesn't take a soccer-loving "liberal" to know BS when they hear it.
Obviously, it happens in every sport, but please show me another sport where people call for stretchers and then are back on the field in fifteen minutes. This happens regularly in soccer and it's a pathetic, laughable spectacle. It's the one aspect of the game that stops me from truly embracing the sport as legitimate.
There is simply no comparison...
I wouldn't say it was that tie that ruined everything, but a win would have definitely secured the US spot, and perhaps gave them a shot at Top 8. But the tie put Team US in the hands of fate, with a very small chance of defeating Belgium. Hm, but they may win. Who knows?
Happens all the time in basketball, and basketball is an even less of a contact sport than football...
I doubt she was wrong in her generalization that soccer's rise to fame is strongly correlated with our decision to merge with the Hispanic world.
No, it does not happen "all the time" in basketball. There is flopping, but nothing like the absurd spectacle that soccer players put on, writhing on the ground, screaming out in agony, calling for a stretcher, and then coming back on the field a few minutes later. I watch A LOT of sports and I have NEVER seen such nonsense in basketball or anything else. This is unique to soccer and is symptomatic of the European influence on the game. What Americans see as embarrassing, laughable behavior, Europeans see as an "art". I say leave the art to the painters and play sports.
Well, you're personal anecdotes are different than mine. I never see the nonsense that I see in football, but rough contact in Football simply cannot be compared to rough contact in basketball. At least when someone fakes a foul in football, they don't get a free kick...
Show me one example of a basketball, baseball, or American football player calling for a stretcher and then coming back to the game a few minutes later. It's already happened five times in World Cup soccer: The World Cup Flopping Rankings
Always the showman, Obama arranges to be photographed on AF1 watching the World Cup with the real POTUS, ValJar, by his side. Notice how he didn't even bother to move his coffee cup with him? You gotta know they turned it off as soon as the cameras left. Story here: http://www.whitehousedossier.com/
I can show you a collection of flops from just one player...
I agree that there are flops in American sports. I disagree that the flopping is nearly as egregious or melodramatic as it is in soccer. That's why I asked you to show me one example of someone asking for a stretcher and then coming back into the game a few minutes later, because I know it's probably never happened in American sports, even basketball. And part of the reason why flopping is becoming a bigger problem in basketball is because of the increasing influence exerted on the NBA by Eurasian basketball leagues. For some reason, Euros like "art" to play a disproportionate influence in their sports. It just pisses most Americans off, though.
The NFL has been paying out on the order of hundreds of millions of dollars to former players suffering the after effects of concussions. The average NFL career lasts 3.5 years. It has been dropping over the years as the players have been getting stronger and faster and the hits getting increasingly violent. Don't get me wrong, I like football (American), but it is a violent sport and Americans like their violence. Coulter can talk a good game, but she's probably never played a contact sport in her life, never served in the military, never been in a fist fight probably...she's the equivalent to a spectator in the Roman Coliseum cheering on gladiators fighting to the death....expending about as much energy as it takes to raise a thumb up or down. It's quite easy to talk a big game, call a sport (soccer) better suited for girls, cheer violence from the sidelines...yes it's quite easy to talk big. It's another story to be a participant...to be a kick returner going against a 220 lb. defensive player who can run a 40 yard dash in 4.4 seconds. The physics of these collisions are the equivalent to being in a car crash. I never played the game...and not ashamed to admit it, it was to honor my Mom's wish not to see her son get hurt. So what exactly is wrong with this outlook? To not desire spending the latter part of one's life with brain damage, all to satisfy a bunch of sedentary beer schlubs cheering on the gladiators from the safety of their couches and seats in the Coliseum. While I am a Conservative ideologically...at least in this op/ed...Coulter is a phoney. Not everyone needs to prefer a spectator sport that involves the potential for serious bodily harm, in fact that's often an integral part of the game. Not everyone gets their rocks off in the vicarious thrill of sadistic fetishism. Hope she doesn't break a nail typing out the next Op/Ed hit piece, because that's probably the only level of physicality she has ever seen or will ever see. End of rant. Thanks for your time.
What have I heard on this thread so far? She has an adams apple? Still probably better looking then your wife. She is a woman so what does she know about sports? Very very misogynist and the liberal War on Women. Have we learned much about what she said? Naw, she has an adams apple. LOL BTW, soccer fans are some of the most destructive fans around. I guess that is what people want to push here, European traditions and violence.
