Gosh .. you don't say! Well what a YUGE surprise, that free stuff is popular. And apparently water is wet, also.
Capitalist is what they are. The reason their Capitalism looks like theirs, and yours doesn't, is because they are a single, very old, very established monoculture, with very little in the way of an underclass/lazy people, and a very cohesive attitude to politics/money/lifestyle etc. ONLY a tight monoculture such as theirs (or Japan's) can achieve this.
Socialism is contrary to the founding of the United States of America. Liberty can only exist when freedom of thought, religion and the right to own your own property exists. Capitalism, while not perfect and needs checks and balances, provides for individualism, creativity, free thought and the right to own your own property, (land, buildings, cars, dollar bills etc) The American experiment has developed over time the most successful country in the history of the world. There were 7,000 illegal border crossings last week at the Southern border trying to get into the United States. Over a million people legally came to the United States last year. In socialist countries, you see mobs trying to exit the poverty stricken tyranny of socialist, marxists and fascist governments where only the ruling class have all the goods. Why in the world would we want to subject ourselves to more socialism, marxists and fascists?
Can't be proved either way, just based on my observation of my fellow Americans and the general Nordic/Germanic attitudes. We in the U.S. don't have the same basic attitude and view of our culture. In fact, with immigration, the Scandinavians are cutting back on their social net and have been for the last ten years or so. Why? Too many non-Scandinavians don't allow it to work.
In my opinion, yes, it is bad. We are not a Capitalist nation and AOC is not a Socialist, both ideologies are a mix of a whole bunch of things that we quilt together to our satisfaction .... sometimes. Every nation that has gone too far to the side of Socialism has paid for it dearly. Likewise, every nation that has added more Capitalistic features, has seen a population growth and almost always a higher GDP per capita. The Roman empire had to deal with a lot of things before it "fell" and there is no one single thing that did it. However, one of the most glaringly obvious things that took them down is that they lost that competitive edge. Diocletian'a reforms may have been necessary, but they absolutely TANKED the Roman economy and literally INVENTED serfdom and Feudalism. The so called "Dark Ages" in Europe were a direct representation of the hyper Capitalistic society of Rome changing to Socialism. The people simply stopped caring about anything because their lives had zero purpose, they had zero freedom to make any actual decisions. The Soviet Union likes to talk so much about being a "Super Power" but their economic output was always pretty laughable at best. They put basically very resource they had into their military, it was just a matter of time until the USSR collapsed. China decided to give up on their Socialism and basically turn it into a Super Capitalism, directed by the top. They are already starting to see the same problem the Romans saw, their people. China's "Super Capitalism" may work for the nation as a whole, but they still have the problem that the vast majority of their population is similar to surfs in Feudalism. Meanwhile, from 1970 to 2006, when Socialism/Communism was officially failing globally, Capitalism was introduced to dozens of nations whom didn't have it and since then global poverty has decreased by 80%!!!!!!! You hear the Pro Socialist people try to talk about how horrible things are, but the fact is that more people are living out of poverty than ever before and our system is allowing for a rapid increase in happy human lives. The competition of Capitalism allows us to produce incredible medical miracles, better energy systems, higher production of food and basically everything you can think of. The problem with it is the same thing the Romans dealt with, those who "aren't good", or don't want to take part in Capitalism, end up being very poor. To combat this problem, we have added more and more Socialism to our system, to allow those previously mentioned to still have a decent life. I am open to discussing adding more Socialistic policies in, but the things that AOC talk about are fairy tales that could only happen if a "dictator-like" person took control. Hence why people make such a big deal out of AOC's language, only a Socialist/Communist talks like she is starting to talk: “If you don’t like the #GreenNewDeal, then come up with your own ambitious, on-scale proposal to address the global climate crisis,” Ocasio-Cortez said in a social media post. “Until then, we’re in charge – and you’re just shouting from the cheap seats”: This quote is a big problem, for all the hooplah about rhetoric that Democrats try to bring up about Trump, they have a good point. If they don't push back against it, Trumps rhetoric becomes more and more powerful. Democrats don't like Trumps rhetoric because it is against the "PC narrative" that Progressives have been building for decades. As it spread like wild fire, calling it "mean" or "crazy" or whatever else is really the only tactic they have left. To that end, this is the type of rhetoric that you always hear from Socialists because they know that for it to work, EVERYONE has to be a Socialist. If not, the Capitalists in the group will outperform the state apparatus and their Socialism will fail. That is why Socialists have to be so authoritarian, if they are not, Socialism will simply fail. So with that said, yes, I think AOC's "Socialism" is a huge problem. It isn't like Bernie who talks about adding bits and pieces of Socialism, more than I would like but still, it is in a debatable and meaningful way. AOC is doing it in a way that is a complete fable, without having absolute control of the entire economy, her out in space plans are impossible. I keep talking to more and more young people that are COMPLETELY uneducated about finance, it is almost like the anti-Capitalism leaning is starting to mirror the "union farms" of the late Roman Empire.
And AOC gave Jeff Bezos and the corrupt NY Democrat establishment a good hard spanking. So, YOU GO GIRL!
And that there (my bold) is the rub. When a critical mass of the populace are not participating, the system cannot survive. The failure of the average American lefty to recognise this is constantly surprising.
So the answer is to do anything we can to destabilize Europe to save a few dollars & risk future European conflicts in the bargain? How is that a good idea, for us, or them, or anyone?
