    Oh no, I can appreciate all that. Im just answering the question - what is best?

    If I can have a gun but no legal system, or a legal system but no gun, I know which one will protect my home the best.

    Shotgun or Handgun for home defence....
    Pending the size and area space in your home. If it is easy enough to menouver around. The 12 or 20 gauge Shotgun is the best option for home self defence.
    Bird shot shells are always a good stopper.
    XX double buck shot shells if you wanna blast the bad guy to pieces.

    If too small an interior area, there are shorter barrel shotguns with a pistol grip. 'Mossberg' makes a popular pump action model in both gauges.

    Personal concealed carry I like the 'Beretta' 9mm caliber in the fall/ winter months. And the compact 'Bersa Thunder' .380 caliber in the spring/ summer months.
    Both are very reliable handguns, with fine reputations.
    I like the Federal Hydra Shock HP ammo.
    Cor-Bon HP ammo is very good too.

    When it comes to the life and protection of yourself and loveones. Never rely on in-expensive, cheap made firearms or low budget ammunition.
    It's worth the extra dollars for quality, and will be the best lifetime investment anyone can make.

    Know your firearm and respect it...... And remember to always keep a tight grip on the grip.

    Response time is at best 10-15 minutes even in a populated area, in the country you are looking at 45 minutes to an hour. Lots of things can happen in 10 minutes and I would rather not hink about what could happen in an hour.
    　
    　
    　
    The police are good at cleaning up the mess, and filling out reports, once the crime has already been committed.
    　

    Once the perp is dead or incapacitated (most likely duct taped to a post or something just as immobile), then I'll get the phone. Only an idiot would worry about the phone when a criminal is in their home. While I wait for the cop to get there might as well make some coffee (cops like coffee especially on cold nights), might as well see what’s on cable this time of night while I wait.
    　
    　
    The best bet is a short barreled pump shot gun (riot gun), and if you know what the hell you are doing turning around isn't that big a deal. Identify the target and remove the threat, or at least that's the way we do it my house.
