I used to make knives from worn out table saw blades. I'd cut the blanks out with a bandsaw, grind an edge, polish them shiny, and bolt on grips made from hardwood scraps from my dads work- white oak, teak, chestnut, mahogany. Eventually I gave em all away as Christmas presents. Though I do still have an axe that I made using the same method.
A few moments ago I nearly clicked "buy" on a Lionsteel B41, I seriously don't know how I managed to not buy it. Still hanging on the precipice however, it may happen here in a few minutes. Lionsteel B41. My daily driver is a Kansept Kratos, with shredded CF scales, both sides. I try to switch up what I carry from time to time but man I love the authoritative way the Kratos opens, not to mention the blade shape. Kansept Kratos.
I have my Sig on me at all times. My knives aren't bought with defensive measures in mind, more of an attraction to materials used and styling.
Oh I'm not really carrying these for self defense. The ESEE is a knife, a machete, and an axe while camping. The boot knife is for food, cutting paracord, fishing, etc. When I've got regular shoes on I've also always got a knife. Never know when that box at your door might suddenly lunge at you.
Tracking software says my knife got delivered to my po box early this morning, but since it's Sunday, they're closed.
Gotta love a good camp knife, and you can tell that Lionsteel is a good 1/4" thick and full tang. That blade style is great for that. For daily carry I'm more of a wharncliffe fanboy.
Funny you should say that about the Lionsteel, just bought it. I may be knife poor for a little while. Wharnys are slick, don't have one yet.
They're probably the best blade shape for killing tape and cardboard. Also really easy to sharpen but you have to be a little more careful at the tip. Envelopes and boxes don't stand a chance.

Oh incidentally I don't know what you sharpen with, but I've found this piece of kit is great for sharpening pocket knives. Meh. I live on a farm, and I use my knife 1000 times a day. I've found I'm better served buying ten $10 knives than one $100 knife. Styling and profiling the badass knife is something I never do, but cutting hay strings and feed bags Is something I do every day.
Different strokes for different folks. Is there anything you do collect? I have a very small collection of opal, some watches, guns, and knives. I have beater knives for dirty work but normally carry a fairly nice folder. Pics are appreciated.
Yeah but a $10 knife is made from steel that holds an edge for about 5 minutes. There are a lot of great heavy use knives in the $50 range though. A nice D2 steel knife is a workhorse and keeps an edge. My requirements for a daily use knife are pretty simple. Keep a decent edge and be fairly fast to sharpen. A dull knife sucks.
I have a thread here that I started and posted in it my full intent to begin carrying. I had planned on getting a Berretta APX. That fell through and I ended up spending twice what I had planned for the amazing P365 SAS. Still don't carry it though. Haven't even made it to a range to try it out yet. Not real worried about it. I can tell putting a round on target with it up to ten feet will not be a problem without ever even having had to fire it. Unless it's a Coyote. In which case I'm not sure I have the time or money for that kind of range practice. I dig the art knife collecting. Used to be one myself in my teens. Had a beautiful cream colored handle inlay lockblade that I lost one morning when I woke up, much to my dismay. Circa 198_ 0, 1 or 2. Had a nasty lockblade that was probably the first model S&W ever sold in my back pocket one time I was in a fight, knew I was not going to win, and wisely left it in my pocket. Big boys might have decided I needed it more than they did and stuck me with it after knocking my ass out if I had pulled it without the intent and successful result of possibly killing 'em, which I didn't have at the time, 16, maybe 17. Just having fun chasing some dudes down that ran a red light and almost t-boned us back in the ville in the winter with snow covered streets. Oooops, guess we shouldn't have caught those dudes!!! Hahaha.... Lesson Learned.... Whatever, it was FAF, even with the slightly scary bump I woke up with on my temple. Fortunately that was the first and last time I ever got a beat down of any concern. Now the real fun is my zombietools.net collection. Oooof! Again! Ha Ha! I own a Phalanx Duece from the boys!
My experience is military, not on a farm. But you certainly came to the same conclusion I have come to with your statement that its better to buy a bunch of $10 tools than one $100 one. Its a pretty good universal idea. Buy a bunch of cheap laptops rather than just one expensive one. It works for almost anything.
