Apparently, the OWS crowd was onto something.
Anyone who has lived through the last 60 years of American history will have seen how the profit motive that underlies capitalism has made greed and materialism the highest values in society and corrupted everyone's thinking.
Unless we have a realignment of healthy values with the way we make money, no amount of money in the world will prevent our social collapse, and with it our economic collapse.
The following article is a non-partisan analysis of what's killing the US as a society and as a viable nation.

You got it all wrong bub. Capitalism is the inspirational economic engine that can lift all boats. The only thing left in lifting any individual's boat---is their own desire to climb the ladder out of poverty. Capitalism is the engine that gave us the most prosperous nation on earth. Now you tell me how or what economic/ideological system on earth is going to lift those billion or so people living on 2 dollars a day out of that misery--if not capitalism? For instance, tell us how atheistic progressive socialism might be the source to look to when considering economic growth, a brighter future, and excuse me while I choke back some flem....but how it will enhance or moralistic outlook on life?

You may be right but I can pretty much guarantee you that those "healthy values" won't come from the Left. The answer to a future where a VERY few people own nearly everything isn't a bland parade of State controlled same-bots.

Unfortunately, a profit motive is not a social motive and must be distinguished in order to not resort to fallacies of false analogy or false cause. We have a mixed market economy that includes both socialism and capitalism. Socialism is mostly the public sector and capitalism is mostly the private sector.

It only requires free social morals to make our system work better, even under any form of Capitalism.

Wholesale abandonment of morality pushed by progressive ideology is the real problem. Morals apply to everything including capitalism. Without moral direction you end up where we are today with immoral businessmen and congressmen.

Progressives needed to find a scapegoat for the destruction they have wrought and with the dumbing down of America, there are enough useful idiots to believe their claim that capitalism is the problem and only a little more tyranny will fix it.

Translated: "You're an "evil, immoral neanderthal" if you don't compliantly and complacently permit authoritarian, Big Fed central planners to continue usurping your individual natural rights, liberties and economic freedoms, and FORCE you to become "thy brother's keeper"

never you mind that "thy poor, disenfranchised, victimized brother" is NEVER asked to hold up their end of the collectivist left's egalitarian "social contract"

Why blame progressives when the Right habitually tries to arrest our human development in the name of Iron Age morals.

The US took Capitalism too far. It is now a consumer culture that relies too much on consumer spending bought by consumer debt. This is not sustainable. It has gotten to the point where, for the first time ever, the US government had to send out stimulus checks to the US people to spend frivolously on consumer goods in order to stimulate the economy. Unfortunately, this got the US more in debt and the consumers who are faced with their own deb (at an interest rate of up to 20%) are the ones who have to pay off the public debt. This is just not possible.

Consumer debt is already ruining lives of millions of Americans, and soon it will ruin America. After the upcoming crash, and it will be huge, there will be epic social programs similar to the last depression. In other words, socialism is going to clean up the mess that capitalism leaves behind.

Progressives are to blame in giving us this society heaped in immoral attitudes, ungodly perverted sexual and child killing ideals. The right teaches and guides the individual into a life based in responsible behavior, a great work ethic, a moral understanding based in Christianity and an overall purpose in life to do good, to succeed in whatever endeavor you take on, and to praise or honor the American traditions and our Constitution and Capitalism for getting us this far. We already know that Conservatives give perhaps 10X more of their own money to charities then do the liberals.

:) Yes...through a government that subsidizes post facto birth control on demand.....wouldn't want cute, innocent little Suzy to be saddled with any inconvenient burdens of her irresponsible sex life, now would we...

Through a government school system that "educates" to the importance of "tolerance and compassion" for all individual and cultural behaviors, (except those that run counter to progressive dogma) and promotes the notion of moral "subjectivity" and "situational" ethics...

through a government the feeds, houses and gives other peoples' money to life's losers....the high school drop outs, the drug / alcohol addled party crowd, the brood mares, the wanna-be gangsters, the "disenfranchised" shoplifters, car thieves, vandals, pushers, pimps, and flash mobbers...and thus expands the demographic (while demonizing the responsible and successful as "greedy")

through a government that pushes the notion (to the point of facilitation) that one "deserves" a home of their own, despite making irresponsible, selfish, materialistic choices that destroy their credit, or limit them to a minimum wage "career" in entry level employment....

LOL no one wanted the stimulus, that was OBAMA king liberals socialist idea that failed just like we all knew it would. The US govt has no way to make money, they get money from revenue generated by people who work through taxes. Obama, took the tax money from people and spent it hoping to stimulate the economy. The classic Robin Hood socialistic idea. According to his own words "spread the wealth"
The problem liberals like Obama are too stupid to see is that the more money you take from taxpayers and people who employ them, the less they spend and the less they hire thus the less revenue for the govt.
If you are right and Im wrong then how did Obama more than double the deficit in less than 4 years? If his idiotic robin hood plan worked the deficit would have gone down not up.
Insert its Bushs fault here.....as there is no arguing the deficit got worse following your above ideology. Since you cant argue that you have no option other than the insert a Bush bash.

You keep resorting to fallacies of false analogies and false causes by omission of the fact that even our own elected representatives don't seem to possess the moral fortitude to bear true witness to our own laws regarding employment at will. It can't be an Individual problem if it is Institutional.

It hasn't always been "institutional". At one time, irresponsible and bad behavior was stigmatized....now, deleterious consequences of such are systemically alleviated with easily accessible, on demand "safety nets"
and coddling and excusing "victimhood" narratives.

Thanks for acknowledging Bush's failed economic policies. It saved me the typing.

Nobody wanted their stimulus checks? Are you referring to all the people who were complaining that their stimulus check came too late, or that it wasn't enough? Do you know of anyone who didn't accept their stimulus check?

That "socialistic idea" that you're complaining about is the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. It was inspired by Bush's Economic Stimulus Act of 2008, which also "took the tax money from people and spent it hoping to stimulate the economy."

Yes, the deficit doubled during Obama's administration. It also doubled during Bush's administration. For some reason, when Bush does it, it's "fiscal conservatism" but when Obama does it, it's "idiotic." Many experts believe that Obama's stimulus plan worked. I believe that it only held off the upcoming crash.

You bash Obama at every opportunity but when Bush did the same thing, it's just fine. This is political dogma at its finest.

It's a joy from time to time to encounter other human beings who are intellectually capable ot understanding what drives societal greatness. Your statements above, Hoosier8, are dead-on! Cultural morality drives the successes and failures of every nation.

"Capitalism" is an ecomonic system. It is not a living, breathing human being. Capitalism has no standards of morality. Only the human beings who practice Capitalism are capable of moral and immoral conduct. This simple concept applies to everything. Guns and knives aren't good or bad. The humans who use them may do so for good or evil purposes. If our homes and schools taught "morality" and "ethics" as was common during my childhood, there'd be societal pressures brought to bear on those who behave with bad intentions. Those principles of morality would be applied to capitalists, union members, politicians, and to the general public.

The thing conservatives will never admit. They would have done exactly the same thing if McCain had won the 2008 election

A glaring problem with capitalism is that the strong prey on the weak. The government protects the weak by limiting this exploitation, but many people believe that it's not enough... that capitalism is getting out of control.

If we lived in a society with no free market regulation, we'd live in a world where only one person had all the money. Government-imposed regulations are good, but they can also go too far. I'm basically a capitalist more than a socialist, but I see merits in controlling markets and preventing predation. From my experience, most rich people don't get rich by being honest; there is usually some kind of exploitation of others, and the poor are particularly vulnerable. So are the stupid, the uneducated, the desperate. These people need protection, and only the government can offer this protection in a fair and balanced way.

"The debt had increased by 34 percent, or $3.66 trillion, under Obama -- well below the 86 percent increase, or a total of $4.9 trillion, under George W. Bush."
    http://www.politifact.com/wisconsin...ent-obama-built-nations-16-trillion-debt-gop/

    Bush:. 86% debt increase
    Obama: 34% debt increase

    'Nuff said.

Only true if you are talking about an immoral society. If society is immoral and the government is "of the people", government will reflect the same immorality so you are just espousing a lose lose proposition.

Indeed, thankfully though American society is indeed very moral. More moral today in fact than it ever has been.
