Yeah, ummm...I don't know the exact wording of the law - or even the circumstances of this incident - but I do believe that hate speech, and definitely anything pro-Nazi, is against the law in Germany. Given Mr. Duke's history, I wouldn't be surprised if he violated the law.

Oh, and "civil rights icon"? Really?:laughing::laughing:

If you are speaking of the Civil Rights Era and struggle in general, yes he is a symbol of that struggle which is what I take the usage of the word "icon" in this context. To be more specific if you like an icon of Anti-Civil Rights.

I have no use for racists like Duke. However I'd like to see what he actually did that got him arrested. I'm glad I live in a land that still respects a modicum of freedom and where thoughts and speech are not controlled by the all-powerful state.

I have no use for Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson or the Reverend Wright but they sure have a right to free speech.

Duke is a stupid guy because he flew to Cologne, the New Istanbul.
This city is the biggest leftist city in Germany where almost a quarter of population are Muslims.Munich or Stuttgart would be probably better in the next time.Additional a big lot of Neonazis are either dumb idiots or agents of Verfassungsschutz ( German Intelligence ).

American Conservatives should work with more serious partners in Germany, e.g. in Cologne.

I agree. However, he was in Germany and they do have some tough hate-speech laws. Again, I don't even know what - if any - hateful things he said. Just my opinion.

They don't. It's part of the constitution that we helped them set up after WWII. Naziism, etc., is illegal there.

So I take it you approve of Holocaust deniers coming to your country to spout anti-Semitism.

When are you going to invite Ahmadinejad?

Duke's an idiot. German law is well-known and he went there to flaunt it.

Spouting anti-semitism in a country that murdered 6 million people just because they were Jews less than a century ago is on par with shouting fire in crowded theater.

What do you mean by "approve of"?

Our Constitution GUARANTIES their right to speak.

Yes, well, our Constitution does not apply in Germany. Duke should have known better.

Alright so apparently Duke went to Prague to promote his new book via three lectures. The book has some passages which the government finds objectionable, "some passages of the book can be interpreted as an effort at justifying or challenging the Holocaust."

So Duke hadn't actually done anything yet, but was intending to promote a book that the government didn't approve of. Fascism is alive and well in Germany.

Not surprisingly we find liberals on this thread hating freedom and wanting more government control of what people are allowed to think and say.

I guess in some circles being a Nazi makes you a Civil Rights Icon. After all, advocating denial of civil rights DOES make you an icon of sorts.

As for being a Dr, Duke got a PhD from a diploma mill in the Ukraine. The organization is known for spreading anti-jewish bigotry.

No wonder the repubs love him.

I'm not a liberal, and I think Germany's anti-speech laws are authoritarian infringements on the right of the individual, but I also recognize the principle of national sovereignty. So, while I may disagree with Germany's speech laws, I cannot defend someone who knowingly tests and flaunts those laws.

We killed native Americans. I support people's right in this country to spout anti-Indian rhetoric. The same goes there. Hitler certainly was against freedom of speech and they still don't support freedom of speech.

No one is advocating the killing of Jews. This is about the government controlling what is acceptable thought. I support freedom of thought.

    Yes they are.

I hate to compare Duke, who I think is scum, to Rosa Parks but she certainly tested and flaunted the laws that were against freedom. It would certainly be better if those laws against freedom were pushed and flaunted by someone who was actually a German citizen.

It doesn't sound like that was even Duke's intent from I know thus far, he just wanted to promote his new book. His arrest however might push it onto the best-seller list over there if stores are even allowed to sell it.
