The debt they were owed will never be paid because they are all dead now. And anyone born in America today is lucky IMO.

I once oversaw the survey of a 40 acre parcel (sadly the mule had passed) wholly owned by the descendants of a slave. I thought it was amazing they kept it through so many generations and not sold any of it - especially considering most of them were dirt poor.

 

As an American, I owe a debt to all who built my nation and contributed to its wealth, slaves conspicuous among them since they did so involuntarily.

If you believe that slavery did not generate wealth in the US, a spot of bother might have been avoided by not engaging in such an unprofitable practice.

 

The wealth created by slavery was wiped out by the Civil War and Reconstruction Period that followed.

I have the benefit of talking to a black man often in this building. I asked him how often he is stopped by the cops for being black while driving?

He looked at me funny and said he does not have this happen. You are also in California and by your dialogue I am now thinking you are black.

So I tested this on other blacks. These other blacks were born in India and not of African stock. But they too said cops do not stop them for being black.

Of course slavery added wealth. But that is not what he was saying. He spoke of infrastructure. I used to boss construction crews after years working in crews. How many black piledrivers do you think were in local 34 pile drivers when I was there? I personally knew about 2 of them. We then had about 1130 members. So what did they build on our jobs?

How many black crane operators do you think I ever saw in my 9 years in that union? None at all.

 

I'd entertain reparations to persons with documentable, bona fide claims, on the caveat that all affirmative action or similar programs would then immediately cease and the next time someone brought up how they're owed reparations they are publicly flogged.

 

Were states today destroyed as they were by Abe's troops, who would discuss money to present day blacks? They never were slaves. We keep telling them that but they still show up begging for public money. They need to stop begging.

The entire country benefited from slavery. The enslavement of Africans is what laid the foundation for the great wealth this country has enjoyed.

 

I am neither African American nor "European American". African Americans are a minority in USA, thus it is hard for them to get reparations.

In peasant-majority Russia, the Nobles were overthrown in 1917. I am proud of my ancestors who played a role in Revolution. As Jews their status was below that of peasants.

When Jews were expelled from Communist Party leadership in late 1920s, Communist Party became Totalitarian.

 

It wasn't the enslaved people's fault that the wealth was lost in the war. They had no control over that.

 

Today's blacks in America have benefitted from what their ancestors endured. I bet there aren't 10 current black Americans who wish their ancestors had been left in Africa so present day blacks could live today in Zimbabwe or Nigeria.

 

Reparations to African Americans are a theoretical concept.

Reparations to Russian peasants were taken after the 1917 Revolution. Most buildings in central St. Petersburg belonged to nobles prior to 1918.

In 1920s, USSR was developing as a Socialist nation. Sadly, USSR became Totalitarian in 1930s. Soviet Incarceration Rate became as high as US Incarceration Rate since 1990s.
