    Former President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced his intention to sue CNN, one of the prime purveyors of what Trump has famously deemed “fake news,” over “repeated defamatory statements” against him, warning that he will take similar action against other media outlets as well.

    The 282-page letter, addressed to CNN’s Chief Executive Officer Chris Licht as well as CNN’s executive Vice President and General Counsel David Vigilante, demands the network publish what is described as”…

    It’s about time! He and we have been used and abused for far too long by the MBFC approved msm. All those terms that are unfounded opinion passing itself off as hard news. I hope he gets billions from them.

    If he didn't care, he wouldn't be threatening to sue. He's a butthurt little man child who is either too stupid to realize this is doomed to fail, or is just doing it (knowing it will fail) to get praise from the most brainless of his base. It's pathetic either way.

    Trump is not more nuanced than that. Neither are any of his followers who would think this "lawsuit" is going anywhere.

    Publicity stunt. He loves CNN and MSNBC because they keep his face in the news and give him something to play the victim card to his supporters with. This is win-win for him. Even if he loses or the lawsuits get thrown out, he goes back to his supporters and says "see, look what the mainstream deep state media did to me, so please donate your money to me".

    Donald Trump is like one of those sleazy televangelists who doesn't even need to preach about God to get people to open their wallets to him.

    Except … he isn’t. Not yet. At least not this lawsuit. And he will almost certainly never file this lawsuit. His announcement is a publicity stunt to raise more money from his gullible contributors.

    Even if that is the case, it's still a long, long way from meeting the legal definition of defamation, especially against a public figure.

    I'd suggest the biggest blocker for a suit would be proving that CNN knew Trump wasn't lying and said he was anyway. If they're expressing opinion, and especially where they're quoting other people's opinions, that would be unlikely to be found to be defamatory.

    A quick glance through the document also suggests it's referring to relatively generic statements about "Trump's lies" or the "big lie". I'd expect they'd need much more specific statements to establish any instances of defamation.

    I agree. The attacks on Trump were personal and defamatory and he should try to over come true public figure handicap and press for discovery in these cases.

    You are giving him 20 to one odds. That is a very generous offer. You should add a time limit for the lawsuit. My guess is Trump will never file the suit.
