So **** EVERYONE for the sake of the extreme minority of mostly older or sicker people? Do you have a 401k? Do you have savings? Do you have a business that is already been destroyed? Older people can be quarantined. Those most susceptible can take measures. But Those with little chance of getting nothing more than cold symptoms or an ordinary flu need to get the country going again. Everyone can wear masks that will certainly slow the spread.

What good is saving people when we destroy the country and those we saved have nothing to live on? You think an elderly person who lost his retirement savings wants to live a few more years knowing his kids and grandchildren’s lives have been destroyed? Save less than 1% of the population while millions of livelihoods and jobs disappear? Have to look at the bigger picture. It’s time. A few more weeks is all we can spare. If you're quarantined you’re not catching it so stay put. An older person most likely isn’t keeping the economy running. They can be distanced without effecting those who can get things back on track.

    Moral Panic:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moral_panic

Acceptable wiki page, but LW slanted as usual, caveat emptor, good for basic summary. Familiar moral panics of the relatively recent past include the satanic ritual abuse (esp day care) and the repressed memories of sexual abuse during the heyday of feminist/militant lesbian hysterics of the late 80s and early 90s.

Also, for anyone who hasn't, read Mackay "Extraordinary Delusions and the Madness of Crowds." Well worth the read. Cheap, used, free postage copies likely all over Ebay.

COVID IS A MORAL PANIC. Special interests are highly motivated in fearmongering this moral panic. How to spot them?

    1. "One size fits all" shills At this point, after the models have proven extremely inaccurate to the point of being clownishly low, -any- person who can read and write who advocates mass U.S. state or other country shutdown is LYING to you PURPOSEFULLY towards whatever self-interest. Could some of the "measures" posted below be advocated or even required? SURE, IN NEW YORK or other virus hot spots.

    2. "Tester" shills. Past this point of general knowledge about COVID, anyone advocating mass, involuntary testing who does not also mention that the "Novel" test is the same old test as for the common cold is either ignorantly parroting or shilling. It's fine to advocate for tests of the common cold, but that's not really the same as this virus. Should antibody tests be conducted in heavy activity areas? Maybe, but always keep in mind "1" above.

    3. Mask shills. See "1" above. Masks are seemingly benign for prevention, but not really. They engender a fearful, negative attitude in the population and massively interfere with many types of business and social life. They are a last resort, yet there is -0- conclusive scientific evidence on masks. Isn't it interesting that the "concerned social scientists" of the gov-edu-union-contractor-grantee-trial lawyer-MSM Complex and their bureaucrat HACKS always skip the EVIDENCE when their politics and POV are favored while DEMANDING pure epistemological proof when their politics or POV are threatened? There's a reason for that, they are purposeful, inconsistent LIARS. Masks are a TERRIBLE idea.

Other shills to watch out for the next few weeks:

    4. "More Lockdown" shills. See "1" above. Even in NYC, the numbers do not support further lockdowns, shills are engaging in purely dangerous SPECULATION if shilling that. People's livelihoods equate numerically to "human life/death" anyone who omits that or plays at false equivalencies is attempting to deceive you.

But you know what? Go ahead and lock down NYC and the big blue cities more, that will be just fine. Just leave the rest of us be, free from the "one size fits all" shlling.

    5. Vaccine shills. We know already that vaccines take months and years. No one would be fooled by shilling to "shut down until vaccine" but hey, they are desperate and they know that a percentage of people are stupid enough to buy into their fear fantasies. Nuff said there.

What part of no economy do you not understand?
I am talking about the type of social distancing in hundreds of small towns all over America where there is not nor will there be a problem with the Chinese virus. These small town have a local population that patronizes the local shops and if they wear their masks they should be permitted to go to the hardware store, take a drive with their family to the local golf course, or buy products to work on their homes without fear of being arrested.
Sorry if that offends you but the lefties are going to be the ones screeching that they no longer have a job and expect the government to take care of them for the rest of their lives.

The vast majority of the deaths are from people who have a high risk for death on any given day and die in droves this time of year.

Most of them don't live in the U.S. Some that do are on SS or their bloated gov pensions, so think they are "safe." I would wager very few of LW posters here have had any job ever in the private sector other than sporadically to qualify for unemployment.

If your claim were true, then we'd regularly see 1,000 - 2,000 deaths a day during flu season, even with extreme distancing measures which I'm sure you are going to pretend we do every year, and every flu season we'd see mass graves being constructed. This is more dangerous. You need to accept reality on this.

In Italy in the area hardest hit, for the period 23rd Feb to March 21st : expected total number of deaths = 10,000 based on average over last five years.

Actual total number of deaths for the period 23rd Feb to March 21st in 2020 = 19000

Why do you think that the total number of deaths nearly doubled in that period compared to the previous 5 years?

Oh, man, I was actually thinking about the ones in Iran. I hadn't even thought about mass graves in New York. But if they are willing to play make-believe that this is normal, they are willing to believe anything. Facts never entered the picture to begin with.

Can you comment on the overall numbers of deaths for Europe, week by week, year over year?

Can you comment on the life expectancy of an 80 year old?

Never saw a zombie movie. I'm not really the panic monkey type. This is a new ball game, and we don't know the rules, yet.

As are younger, otherwise healthy people. And by any rational measure, the danger is much higher than anything we see with the seasonal flu, even after taking drastic measures that the fringe want to reverse prematurely.

I've already given a relevant link showing that the number of deaths doubled in Lombardy due to this virus. Where do you think this excess number of deaths came from? The life expectancy of an 80 year old in 2020 is the same as the life expectancy of an 80 year old in the previous 5 years so what point are you trying to make?

I'm starting to think that the point for these naysayers is, "if we lose extra sick and elderly people, it's not much of a loss." If these people win and we open up too soon, we get to say, "told you so." Such a hollow "victory." My preference, by orders of magnitude, is that I DON'T have to say that. I'm horrified what will happen if we open Vegas, Disney, theaters, etc. The economic disaster would be so much worse.

Yeah, the "mass graves" are distorted out of context fake news as a matter of fact, you'd know that if you'd looked into it, neither one of you are honest enough to admit your error, so will just leave it at that:

If you had tried reading, you'd know I was talking about the mass graves in Iran, not New York. But keep pretending this isn't any worse than the seasonal flu.

And let's see if you are "honest enough to admit your error." Won't hold my breath, of course.

People who think they will survive if there is no economy will wish they had died from the Chinese virus.
