    There's hypocrisy on both sides.

Still, I think it's easier to logically justify investment in public amenities than it is to justify telling people who they can and can't marry or what drugs they should be able to use recreationally.

Huh...I could care less what some Dr. Nutt says. I've been drinking legally for 6-years and never have done anything I've seen heroin attics do.

Harmful to society? WTF does that even mean? I can be "harmful to society" too by engaging in freedom of speech that goes against the government. Collectivist rubbish. The only thing that matters is the harm that a drug causes to the INDIVIDUAL, and I can assure you that marijuana is far less harmful to the individual than mushrooms. This study has been corrupted by a political agenda. There is no way that alcohol is more harmful to the individual than CRACK or HEROIN.

Time to make alcohol illegal? Are you high? We already tried that and look what THAT did to "society". Crime and gangs were rampant. Do you really want the Mexican drug cartels that are funded by the US government to gain a monopoly over alcohol too, and sell potentially lethal moonshine to college kids? Sorry but your logic is ass-backwards.

You mean "let's live what I think is a better life or else we'll throw you in jail"? Looney Statist propaganda.

I'm not even going to go into all of this again. But conservative positions on drugs and marriage (not to mention abortion..... the big 3) are based on more than just simple "religious dogma" as their opponents would have you believe. Religious dogma is the quick-draw copout used to avoid having to actually discuss the issues at length and potentially acknowledge logical merit in the conservative positions.

On the flipside, much of the modern left wing authoritarianism is based on little more than people's feelings and a knee-jerk need to control anything that someone else does which might hurt those feelings. It's rather difficult to logically argue that the government should "stay out of people's personal lives" when you're pushing for bans on things like pets, circumcision, and fast food.

Where have you been living all your adult life?

Kalamata olives, a good Brie cheese (I can recommend King Island Brie from Australia), water crackers and a bottle or two of a Hunter Valley Shiraz.

    Life's good!

Yes, my rights end at your nose...but apparently your rights extend into my house and my body and allow you to determine what substances I can consume? Pffft...

Big problem with booze is it is not just harmful to the user, but also to others. Drunk drivers kill thousands on our highways every year. Drunk driving, even first offense, should be an automatic felony with loss of license for at least a year.

First, a couple hours of panhandling or even picking up discarded cans & redeeming them will usually do it...a 40 is only about $2, a 24oz can of cheap beer is about $1.

How about thirty years? There was a man addicted to cocaine for several years and to morphine (note: heroin is merely a concentrated form of morphine) for more than thirty. The only things he acccomplished were revolutionizing medicine: pioneering blood transfusions, surgical residency, many revolutionary advances in surgery (including the sterile operating theatre), the first mastectomy, he pioneered the first latex gloves, and meny other surgical innovations, including thyroid & hernia surgery. This lifelong addict also co-founded a little school called Johns Hopkins. I am referring to William Stewart Halstead, surgical genius, medical pioneer, the father of modern surgery...and was addicted to morphine for the last 36 years of his life, including his entire tenure at Johns Hopkins.

Yes. One of my childhood friends died from an overdose when he was only twenty-one. Drug laws did nothing to stop him from destroying his life and may, in fact, have contributed to his drug habit by creating a black market where he could easily access those hard drugs as a minor.

Yea right. Alcohol causes far more death and destruction.

Decades? You can kill yourself in one night with alcohol.

    That's because alcohol is LEGAL.

    Nonsense, dude.

    "Despite general knowledge about
    alcohol intoxication, drinking and driving
and some of the long term medical
    consequences of alcohol abuse, few
people realize that deaths from alcohol
overdoses occur about as often as for
    other drugs
