It is necessary to compare not GDP, but GDP in PPP. You do not consider that goods in Russia (including weapons) are much cheaper than in the West. In terms of GDP (PPP) per capita is also not among the leaders in Russia ($26,926 in 2016), but above Greece ($26,829) or Turkey ($24,986) and MUCH above China ($15,395) :) China will you also underestimate? Even a number of Western countries with a relatively high standard of living come off Russia not very far - Israel ($35,220), Spain ($36,347).

I would compare it with a whale and a bear. The whale is much stronger in the seas, but if he decides to fight a bear in the forest I wouldn't regard as a sane idea. Russia is surely able to fight with the US army on our territory or in the territory of such countries as Syria. Libya is already much further and we couldn't help it out. Yugoslavia happened at times of Russia's weakness, which no Russian want to repeat. That actually strengthens positions of Putin in domestic policy. Although the US spends millions of USD inside Russia to spread anti-Putin propaganda.

NATO was established in late 1949 but the russian consolidation of Eastern Europe as the Soviet Bloc began as soon as the Red Army occupied those countries

The same happened under Anglo-American army. :) This is hardly an argument. Of course, you would be grateful to the army which saves you from fascist regime. And in the beginning, when it is all about food and shelter there is not that much economical differenct between liberal and directly managed economy. The second is even slightly more efficient. So it is a small wonder that right after the war the popularity of left ideas spread in the territory controlled by soviet army. They just didn't struggle with communists the way it happened in the USA.

I noted two war plans right after the war (and it needed planning during the WWII, such plans are not done in a day, e.g. the german plan of war against France and Russia were made by Shliffen decades before the 1914 and 1941 which also used the general concept) and certainly an aggressive political decision to form a military (!) alliance obviously opposing the soviets. You presented another 'white powder' argument.

It's a widespread picture in Russian Internet. It usually goes with traditional anti-Russian propaganda statement. You can put something like:
    - Russian hackers have a note of all of your passwords in facebook
    - Russians would send you to clean out the snow from Siberia
    -etc.

They were quite happy not being in the Soviet sphere

Stalin was surely not a kitten. He was hardened in Russian civil war and recognized the instrument of death penalty and imprisonment as legal and easy acceptable solution. That comes not from ideology but from the personal life of Russian revolutionaries. But I wouldn't say that communist especially populist ideas were not popular the way you say. In fact they are still popular. American leftists at the very moment protect left policies in the USA itself! They don't call themselves communists, but in all other aspects they are just a branch of Marxist ideas and ideas of French revolution. Soviet ideas were extremely popular in Europe after WWII and it took a lot of efforts to fight with an idea itself from western propaganda.

Talking of cruelties I also wouldn't call the soviet regimes in Europe so cruel. They were inefficient comparing to western regimes. There was an illusion that if eastern Europe chose a different ideology they would live the same as they do in UK and France. But in fact even today the difference between the countries in EU is not overcome and there are already ideas to hold this status quo by forming 'Europe of two speeds of development'. Inequality comes not from ideology but from the strength and stability of political power and business structures. Although the people who rebelled with arms were oppressed like ... like in US this year. Some of eastern European countries used the help of their allied armies. Some didn't using their own army. But this cruelty is a must. It is much better than the outcome of civil war. If Poland or Czechoslovakia was turned into Libya or Afghanistan it would have been worse for the people there. But I certainly understand that this argument won't reassure you, because that is the basis of propaganda. First they show you a ripped off kid, then they tell you that it was a communist who did it. In place of communist it can be a muslim, a man, a republican, a white American or whoever the propaganda owner needs to fight with. Giving up propaganda presumes that you like the idea of kids being ripped off. But that is the core of deceivement.

Any Pole or Czech who opposed the Soviet occupation disappeared and was never seen again

The same for Hungarians who revolted in 1956

And East Germans who tried going over the Berlin Wall to reach freedom

    They were all shot

And it was 100% legal. If someone decides to cross the border of the US in presence of an armed marine I wouldn't blame marine for opening a fire. It's his duty and job. The armed rebels were suppressed and here I am again on the side of the armymen and politicians rather than the public. Although I understand it all about the weakness of communist ideology and respect the desire of the rebels for independence and all the good. When the law changed and mass protests and strikes made the political reforms and change of ideology that was exactly the way how it should have been from the beginning. The Czechs and poles changed their countries at their own responsibility to what they think is better. I also regard those Russians as absolutely the same who performed the same in 1990s.

You don't see the actual people and actual facts in the history. For you the history is a number of propaganda articles in the newspaper which always have those who are guilty in everything and those who are angels in flesh. There has never been such a history. Only propaganda.

I agree that from Stalins point of view the Soviet occupation of Eastern Europe had th be brutal or there would have been no Soviet Bloc

Indeed not even all the russians wanted to be in the Soviet Union

Or what we in rhe West thought of as russians during the Cold War

In fact they were Ukranians and other non russian nationalities that were part of the old Russian Empire when the communists took over in 1917

In Stalin's viewpoint the policies in the eastern Europe were soft and friendly.

1917 was a catastrophy of political instability during the war which led to civil war which is still visible in the society. National minorities are the first ones who decide to break off under such circumstances. Primarily Finland and Poland left the Empire having their own civil wars. The government which gained the power as a result was unprofessional and populist. They couldn't get much better results. Stalin was actually the only chance for the USSR. Our country would be a big Libya or Afghanistan if not his cruel regime. We would have lost millions in wars of everyone against everyone. If the state developed under Stalin, since times of Khruschev it started its decay. The weakness of ideology prescribed to wait until the victory of communism happens by itself around the world. The guys were waiting even after it became obvious that the classes of workers and peasants almost disappeared from the structure of post-modern society.

The elite of USSR was not driving the process it was driven by their own propaganda which resulted in an absolute collapse. To talk the truth I see the same behavior from American democrats, who started to believe into their own propaganda even though it fails to describe the actual facts of the world. Again. It is not about who is better and who is worse not even about choosing between ideal and absolute evil. It is about common mstakes, common patterns of every empire development and risks for each stage.

Talking about different nationalities and their 'freedom'.
Yes people recognize themselves as a part of a family, part of Church, part of class, part of a nation, part of political ideology. You want to be alone? You can understand everything but you won't take part in the political life. When people are happy with what they see around - they agree with any of these groups. But when they don't like what is happening - they start to not associate themselves with a leading group, a group proclaimed as the one having the right for political power. This weakens the political power and makes possibilities for different competitors. It can be leftists or fascists, it can be Christians or muslims, it can be nationalists or globalists. It actually doesn't matter. What does matter is the level of their readiness to take power and ability to fight everyone else. The methods differ but the essence stays the same worldwide since the Egypt of ancient times till the processes of modern EU and USA. Russian Empire and USSR no exclusion.

What you say has labels. For instance when communists took power in 1917 they called themselves victims of the tsar who oppressed the poor people for centuries. You don't belive them, do you? But when in absolutely the same situation Ukrainians or Georgians took power you agree that they have been victims for centuries... This happens not because some of these groups is worse or better. It happens because it is better for the interests of your ruling group. A big and powerful Russia no matter if it USSR or tsarist empire or democratic federation is a tough bargainer and contender. A group of 100 states in its place hostile to each other as it happens with different tribes in Libya now is much better. For them. Not for you. Not for me. This is the only valid structure to put the facts in. With one big HUGE note. Any power is better than revolution. Even if you think... Especially if you think that you yourself are ready to come with a better solution.

I actually understood 'rear hemisphere' as an aircraft notion. The thing is that a plane cannot perform a backfire. Its cannon or rockets need to be aimed at the target with a small angle that leaves the maneuver for a rocket. Modern rockets are not able to break the laws of phisics and to change their course to the opposite fast enough. This leaves the pilot behind with a considerable advance. He can shoot fast at 'rear hemisphere" of his opponent.
But maybe my knowledge of English was too poor to identify the irony in the first post.

You are uninformed regarding the actual extent to which populations in western European nations favoured communism and the left.

This, in fact, was the primary reason why the CIA, MI6 and NATO "activated" the covert Gladio stay-behind network throughout Europe to ensure communism didn't achieve victory t the polls - despite being quite popular in various western European countries. To achieve its aims, Gladio engaged in brutal false flag operations that included bombings, kidnapping, killings and other covert warfare activities that were then blamed on communists in order to sway public opinion.

Have I been Assad I would have the Ruskies shot down these megabillion dollars divas out of the skies. Not only are the US un-invited in Syria, but it also randomly attacks it from time to time. Casus belli for anyone, IMO.

If it's the Russians shooting them down you will do nothing above a low growl.

"Was". They are not making F-22s anymore. Now the spending task is taken by the F-35, and as of of today it's a resounding success!
