    I found this interesting.
I'm not a fan of this at all. I get what they don't like, but I don't believe in legislation that limits education in the university system. It seems awfully discriminatory and authoritarian on it's face.
    What about religious studies?
From the article: "It would prohibit general courses “with a curriculum based on unproven, theoretical or exploratory content.”"
Most of religion would fall into that category, imo, so would that eliminate any religious courses?
Seems to only affect state schools, so then you create a situation where a private school is allowed content not allowed in a state school.
I think it's a reaction to CRT and DEI programs, and I don't agree 100% with those, but seems to be a huge overreaction. A little too authoritarian for my taste.
    What do you think?

So, no Florida University will be teaching any of the arts, literature or social sciences?

Bet it does not include any religion except the state sponsored ones

I think Desantis has proven to be a very good competent governor and the Libs have proven to be god awful at teaching kids so until one or the other of those facts changes, DeSantis ought to have the benefit of the doubt on effective reform and any implications it may or may not result in

What are gender studies, what do they teach? I learned all I need to know about the only two genders that exist and I did so long before I even went to kindergarten. I cant imagine how any one would take out student loans for this crap and then asking the taxpayers to foot the bill in an effort to get votes.

Let me ask the left this question: once you go all the way with your gender studies, what jobs await you?

State Universitys are under the authority of the state and if they say no to this curricula being offered, sense they pay for it they can say no. Offer the class but charge full price for it for in district students. Nobody will take it.

I'll say that many people I know like Desantis, but disagree with your assessment about Libs and teaching.
I'm a teacher, teaching in a deep red area, and the failures of the school systems in general have nothing to do with Libs or Cons. Failures of the school system are a lot more complex, and it starts with the students and parents, probably in elementary or middle school. There are issues with some teachers, no doubt, but the administration of the schools is a larger problem, along with the mishandliing and lack of money.
I don't see where anything in this bill (I haven't read it beginning to end, though) that would help with education.
I also think that diversity isn't a bad thing, and it's better addressed than shoved into a closet.
This isn't too far from legislating morality, and I don't agree with that.
The only positive I see is pulling back on some of the more extreme liberal ideas, I just think it's government sticking it's nose where it shouldn't be.
It also is discriminatory, in that it apparently doesn't apply to non-state schools who want to teach religious values. Why is one thing favored over another by the state?
    Thanks for the comments!

It's important to make fun of dumb things otherwise people won't think they're dumb.

Yeah, like interracial or gay marriage, eh?
Bigots, homophobes and racists have been trying to make ‘fun’ of things they hate since forever, although I don’t think lynchings, cross burnings or throwing gays off rooftops is very funny. Do you?

That might depend on the point of view. You and others may think it's a waste of time, and I think sometimes it is, carried too far, etc., but don't discount that it's not a waste of time for some.
Some of the "pain in the ass" training does someone some good, may even save a life here and there. I do agree that some of it is overboard, but that's to be expected.
Maybe not majors, but minors and extracurricular should be allowed if a student sees fit. Also, a college course doesn't exist without students wanting to take the course.
A lot of it is supply meeting demand. Some of it is political correctness, but most of it just by the old fashioned American way, "back, by popular demand!"

I stand by my original assessment.
gender studies isn't training. It's not that useful
if I was hiring college-educated people and they had a minor in gender studies he absolutely would never hire that person. Is there more of a liability than they are an asset.
no it's not supply and demand have you ever been to college? They force you to take some courses if you don't want to take them they hold your graduation over your head.

It's not supply and demand that's Force and I imagine a gender studies is one of these things because nobody would take it if it was elected because it's dumb.

I don't think either one of those two things compares to a waste of time naval gazing college course.

The difference is people making fun of frivolous waste of time they will gazing in college courses are not bigots they're smart.

I've heard people refer to underwater basket weaving is a way to mock frivolous college majors or minors or classes gender studies replaced that.

Some people think it’s also smart to throw gays off rooftops so they don’t pollute society.

IMO they (gender studies/humanities) SHOULD be banned. They've done nothing but divide this country and has produced no good what so ever that I can see. Besides, they're worthless degrees. We need more people in STEM fields. Not humanities.

But, that is not what the bill is specifically about. As you note, its about banning a curriculum based on "unproven, theoretical or exploratory content". On that basis I don't agree. Professors often teach those very things all the time, even in STEM fields. Unless there are exceptions in this bill, its going to affect far more than "gender studies".

If I had the power, as Governor or President, I would not ban even Gender Studies. People can choose to learn whatever they want as adults. However I WOULD ban all fields of study except STEM fields from receiving ANY government monies. I would take that money that was spent on such and either eliminate its use entirely, or put it all into STEM fields. This includes all loans and grant monies. And would not be just limited to colleges/universities. It would apply across the board for any sort of "study" that is not STEM based. Colleges/Universities and students could still have/take those classes. It just would not be funded by the Government. They'd have to pay their own way or get some sort of loan/grant/charity money from the private sector.

Our education system is crap. While we're arguing about what a damn woman is or whether or not men can have babies, we're being outstripped by other countries to a degree that is shameful....at best. For example: LINK: Japan Shattered Internet Speed Record at 319 Terabits per Second (interestingengineering.com) Yet here I am sitting at 94.53Mbps download with 3.17Mbps upload. And while I am at the very low end of what is available in the US....even those higher end ones look like dial up compared to what Japan is doing. Hell, even NASA can't get even a quarter of their speed.

The ultimate gender studies is becoming an OB/GYN. If this bill passes, then I guess that can't be taught at any Florida Medical school, among other things.

It appears that Gov. DeSantis is going against "academic freedom" in the purest sense and trying to become "woke" and more like NK.

Only if you stretch the definition and word usage difference to a breaking point. An OB/GYN is a medical professional. Their knowledge is based on actual medical science derived from biology. Gender Studies, as talked about normally without your stretch has nothing to do with biology or science.
