Pledges mean squat. Trump told them to MEET THEIR PLEDGES and the Secretary General gave Trump credit for "urging" the to follow through with their pledges. I'll believe him.

And 12 other nations others. It was a World War. The point is the French stood up and fought, and lost 1.4 million soldiers KIA. US pitched in towards the end and it cost us 67K fatalities.

They should have never fallen behind. Doing so weakened NATO.

 

There were negligible dips in 2015 and 2016 but thereafter spending as a percent of GDP has been stable or shown a small increase year on year.

There's no question Belgium needs to do better. The country has been historically averse to defense spending, and not at all averse to diverting defense funds into other areas to meet economic challenges. Committing to change, Belgium has recently launched a national defense overhaul and modernization program, to result in increased spending.
