How is the South inherently 'racist'?

The employers in the south don't hire them or promote them as much as in the North, where federal equal opportunity laws are better enforced due to a shared affinity with Government.

The south is more anti government and therefore more racist, so any progress by minorities in the south is usually in government but not in the private sector.

Southern white business owners generally see minorities as lazy, and don't like to hire them unless their illegal immigrants who could then be exploited for low wages since they have no rights to begin with.

 

What seems to be missing from this thread is common sense and facts. A region can't be racist, but people living there can be. The reason one sees the south as more racist is because the people living there who have racist attitudes are more comfortable expressing them, and some attitudes are so ingrained they are no longer seen as racist. Two examples come to mind when I live in Georgia. When I met with the new insurance agent in his office he asked his buddy where a colleague was today, his buddy, in front of me, a stranger, said, "He is the laziest white man I know, took the day off". Later that week in the public library I heard an elderly woman tell a librarian that she didn't want "to do the N-word work" to look for a book. She didn't edit.

But when I lived in Boston the racism was more subtle. People used coded words, people assumed black people would be engaged in certain behaviors etc. But never open an public.

Racists are everywhere.

Now why with a large black population does racism still exist? There are many cultural reasons and certainly there are clearly responses to blatant racism that attacks the rights of individuals. But the day-to-day ignorant rants, the use of certain phrases etc, often go unchallenged in part because it is seen for what it is, a dying cultural vestige that is generally seen as backward.

African-American culture has also had a bit of a growth in the south and we were seeing a growing black middle class. Just like the Jews a century ago black people will likely follow the same trajectory in the south finding themselves in business and government.

Oh there will still be racism, and the power structure will still be stacked against them, especially black males, but that is far more ubiquitous than we want to believe.

You are generalizing the entire state which has way more blacks and hispanics in it that the northern "white" states, so you are practically saying that because there are so many blacks in the southern "racist" states, the IQ is lower. Well, with a well paying job offered, there would be an incentive to move huh? And all those escaped slaves just had but loads of cash save too right? Those whites that moved to CA for the gold rush were rich too. Please, quit making excuses, its pathetic.

 

Anecdotally, I have lived in both suburban Detroit, and suburban Atlanta. In Atlanta, the races seem to be much more integrated and harmonious. In Detroit, there is an obvious animosity between the races, and the housing patterns are FAR more segregated.
