How is this allowed at a publicly funded School?

They love redefining words to their advantage. It's cute. It makes their arguments really easy to dismantle. They think they sound smart and enlightened when they just sound like morons.

We can always catch them when they start talking out of both sides.

I can't be bothered to read this whole pathetic thread and don't know if already pointed out but two of the professors are white. Are they banned too?

    Well since you missed the thread, let me recap you a description of the event and it's intent/purpose that the COLLEGE ITSELF describes it as;

    https://ls.berkeley.edu/news/uc-ber...celebrating-community-culture-and-achievement

"As commencement season kicks off across the U.S., UC Berkeley’s Department of African American Studies is preparing to host the annual Black Graduation ceremony on May 20, 2023, at Zellerbach Hall. Black Grad, as it is affectionately called, honors and celebrates Black-, African-, and African American-identifying students upon completion of their undergraduate, master’s, Ph.D., J.D.,"

"“The celebration of the perseverance and achievement of Black students is critical to the well-being of our community. We know that because of the obstacles our young people face, the numbers graduating from college do not represent our true ability and potential. Black graduations provide empowerment to students and their families.”

"Since then, the event has evolved into a venerated Berkeley tradition honoring the historical significance of Black excellence in a predominantly white institution."

"it is the only place where you can see Black students from across the campus gather together: Economics, computer science, humanities, and social science majors all come together at the same time"

So let's not peddle bullshit. This is a black specific event, meant to coddle and segregate black student's graduation...because reasons. Berkley's description of the event and it's purpose are very clear and concise. This is not meant for anyone other than Black students.

This is exactly why you will not see any White students celebrated at this event.

Really? You would be perfectly fine with a "White Graduation Ceremony" celebrating white excellence and white students graduating, so long as black students are allowed to attend? That would not be a problem for you?

Just confuse race for something else, like wealth or culture, and proceed by proxy, and it will all make perfect sense to you.

Maybe it's called that because it's being done outside in the darkness, or maybe it's the astrological students who study black holes, or maybe it's the goth kids :)

It also takes a regressive mentality to fail to recognize this takes us back to that rather than away from it.

White people were not celebrated. The event segregates all the black graduates because they need to be coddled.

African American Studies program graduates were celebrated. Do you have confirmed proof there were no non-black students who graduated with an African American Studies degree?

I mean we have video evidence. You have a vague wording on the poster which might possibly include other races other than black, but unfortunately for you...the school's own website squashes any misunderstanding as to the purpose of the event and whom the event is for.

White people can attend the event, but they will not be getting up on stage.

He's clinging on to the vague wording of the poster, ignoring the school's own website which has a much more comprehensive and detailed description as to the purpose of the event and whom it is specifically for.

    That's why he's ignoring that.

Right...the event was for African American Studies program graduates. Any white people who graduated from the African American Studies program absolutely would be getting up on stage. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

No no no...learn to read. The page is very clear as to whom the event is for and why.

"Black Grad, as it is affectionately called, honors and celebrates Black-, African-, and African American-identifying students upon completion of their undergraduate, master’s, Ph.D., J.D., and professional degree programs from departments all over campus."

It is not saying what you are saying. It is NOT saying that it is honoring "African American Studies program graduates.

You clung onto vague wording on the poster...trying to turn a blind eye to what is a an even that segregates graduates at Berkley based on race.

    OK.
I don't understand the post you did above in a response to me.

Of course it would be illegal to exclude non blacks. That has been my point this entire thread. But try explaining that to those who think this ceremony is racist, or the like. That's what my post was doing that you made the response to.

    Cared about what?
What color skin was in that 1 graduating class? No one should care.

Do you care? It seems like you care based on a few posts now.

Here I'll post it again for you. It's much more specific.

"Black Grad, as it is affectionately called, honors and celebrates Black-, African-, and African American-identifying students upon completion of their undergraduate, master’s, Ph.D., J.D., and professional degree programs from departments all over campus."

You can't read. Nobody here said that White people couldn't attend. We said this ceremony is specifically and ONLY for Black graduates. Nobody will be celebrating any White students at this event.

It's amazing how many times in this thread it has to be repeated.

And it's amazing how many times it's incorrect. The Berkley website thankfully goes into much more detail than the poster.

    ;)

"Black Grad, as it is affectionately called, honors and celebrates Black-, African-, and African American-identifying students upon completion of their undergraduate, master’s, Ph.D., J.D., and professional degree programs from departments all over campus."

It is not. No one has been excluded from taking up the program or attending.
So I did read and I actually understand.

Seem some read and don't understand and think this is a black only event. Just because only blacks attended doesn't make it a black only event. People choose to be in the program or not. People choose to attend the ceremony or not. No one is told they can't.
