I have found that arrogance can lead to ignorance - that is my opinion anyway. And how was my statement wrong? I don't doubt that it was - I suck at grammar. But I would like to learn.
Son of a (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)...I never even knew there was such a thing. Nobody ever tried to find out why I sucked so bad at math. They, like me, just assumed that was it, I just sucked at it. (*)(*)(*)(*). Kind of makes you(me anyway)think. All three of my siblings have always excelled academically but I always struggled. Part of it was my own fault, I know that, but still. Now I don't feel so dumb.
Perhaps so. "A person" is singular; "their" is plural. Correct sentence would be: A person has got to know his/her limitations. OR People have got to know their limitations.
I have to laugh really at some of the names who think themselves above average, considering this is an open poll . A good self image is not a negative thing I suppose even if its unfounded in reality. Just a point, some of you self rated geniuses might like to learn how to spell so we can interpret your intellectual brilliance more easily.
I can tell you that the majority of the people who selected the smarter category are actually incorrect. They cannot all be smarter than the majority since they happen to be the majority according the polls. I would bet that the smartest ones are the ones who chose average.
Wait. You think the smarter ones are the ones who chose average and you chose average. And you say that the ones who chose smarter are actually not as smart as they think. You chose average and then defined those who chose average as the truly smarter. This means you effectively chose "smarter." But, you feel those that choose smarter are not really smarter, so you chose average..which really meant smarter, which means you were not smarter than average...which means you are...which means you aren't...which means you are....which means you aren't..Which means... Brainfreeze.
I'm glad Herkdriver gave you an answer to this problem - reading your post I knew it was some kind of dyslexia - many people have that problem, so you're not alone w/it....... It's always good when you get an answer to a problem or something you don't understand and now you can move forward w/this - there may be help for this, but now, at least you know......
I agree. It is very difficult to say and prove that someone is smarter than someone else. It is like comparing apples and oranges. One can be a genius in math but hardly able to speak fluently with others. Another may be a genius with language and knows 10 different languages. Can you truly compare the intelligence of the two when what they know is so different? This pole was not to find out who is more intelligent. I believe it was a pole to find out who is the least modest.
You have discovered what truly ails me... Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Perhaps I simply did not include myself in that group or perhaps I am truly insane.
looks like fragile X syndrome ^ to find out for certain you can check to see if their testicles are 3 times normal size
Isn't one of them the current manager of the England Rugby team?!! Is the ball about.....ummm...uummmm.....this big?!! Obviously, the poll is going to be pretty pointless - many people will assume that they are the smartest, everyone that agrees with their political view is smart, and everyone that opposes their political view is obviously 'dumb' because they are 'wrong'! It's human nature to make such assumptions, of course, but that doesn't make such assumptions true!
I'm a genius. Not tootin' my own horn; that's just what the IQ tests say. The question then becomes "is the average PF poster a genius?" Judging by the regular incidence of fallacious reasoning, I have to conclude that they're not.
If 10 was the highest and 0 was the lowest, I am an 11. Ha ha... seriously? I would say about 5 to 6. My IQ which means near nothing and is a hindrance when its Mensa level. It's above average or was when last measured, it declines with age, I think it was 119, that was umm in the army, it was so long ago. Usually the army did not test IQ they tested similar things, however I lost my original MOS when I blew out my knee on my first static jump (101st airborne), and had to offer me an alternative MOS or disable me and pay me a lot of money. So they I got to go directly into PsyOps which was a new MOS back then, and they measured IQs because it was somewhat difficult (I went into cryptology). Man that was gravy! Anyway, today my IQ seems about 70, on a good day. Rev
My IQ is over 120, not that it means anything necessarily. There are people a lot more innately intelligent than me who are utter failures, and people innately less intelligent who are doing important work, have a good family, etc. That is, very successful and useful to society. Put another way, intelligence doesn't mean sh*t on its own. It's how you apply it that matters. Most people in internet forums talk a lot, and research / read very little. That's about all you need to know. Want to be smarter than average? Turn off CNN, Fox, MSNBC, pick up a good paper like the Times or magazine like the Economist, and read like tomorrow is the end of the world.
You can find the truth by listening to all of them and comparing them to eachother. A each person views an event in a different way than another person. The event is still the same but the stories told by each person are different. Only by hearing all the stories and finding the simularites and differences of each can you fully determine the truth of what happend. Just reading a paper like Times will only give you a single point of view. Regardless of how unbiased that view is, it will still have some errors and data ignored because that person thought it unimportant or had a different view of the situation than another unbiased individual would have had.
I never even suspected something like that existed. I figured that if I was try to compare to dyslexia my teachers or parents or who ever would think I was just making stuff up. I'm no genius, I know that but it's always good to know that you're not stupid, there really is a reason why you have a problem with the things that you do. Honestly though, I'm not complaining. I am all to aware of my shortcomings however I've always felt that because of my shortcomings I've had to adapt in my way of thinking. I feel that I'm more creative because of it and I wouldn't want to trade it for anything else. I'm not to worried about it now that I've graduated(would like to do college someday though), I just figure whomever I do marry has to know how to do math or we're just plain screwed financially.
That's right, intelligence means nothing without the right applications. My oldest brother is extremely intelligent and an elementary school teacher, however he has a major superiority complex because he has a college degree. He'll put just about anyone down(not his wife thankfully)because they make a mistake. Personally I think the greatest things that we learn are not so much from text books but from the mistakes we make, by listening to others, and just plain living life. Those are really the things that we would like to pass onto our children. Any things else is just icing.
