I rode a bull twice. An enormous Poll (without horns) Hereford. You should've heard my dad (who encouraged me to get on him) laugh when the bull ejected me both times.

I'd no more mount one of those as I would Grizzle! At least you have a chance to survive playing dead! A brahma, well them demonic bastards are just as content sticking a horn in you laying down, standing up or running away :)

Depends on the bear. IIRC, a Black Bear you play dead. A Grizzly you countercharge. A Polar Bear you fight like hell and pray.

A Brahma is actually one of the most gentle breeds of cattle if you know how to approach them.

Then your post went off topic in it's statement concerning human safety.

My experience with black bears is that banging pots and shouting will deter their inquisitiveness.

This even worked once when we were cooking steaks during a wilderness river float.

That guy might have simply waited for nightfall, but we took care to have an especially clean camp!

I think this wave of new natural deodorant, body sprays, soaps, etc... attracts them more, the bears just smell berries... food

    Interesting point.

We do these trips unguided and in small groups from a reasonably wide circle of like minded friends.

So, body care is the river! And, we take care of what soap gets used for cleanup.

I'm sure the smell us, but we don't get mistaken for berries - lol!

I didn't make a post about human safety but if you feel the need to take my post out of context to say that, it would mean your digging for excuses because you can't dispute what I actually posted.

they smell the buries, and come, then is when the encounter happens

same reason people keep food away from a tent, it keeps the bears away, or at least over there, verses where they are :)

    You stated:
"I can tell you from first hand experience, if you stand in the way of loading horses or bulls, you will get run down."

The only time I've been charged by an animal was when I was moving nearly yearling calves in a chute.

One went berserk and ran at me at full speed down the chute. When I dodged, it went past and ran head first into a corner the chute took. The calf was dead instantly, as nothing could survive that impact.

True. Our edibles were up in a tree at night!

I do believe they can smell the food from a long way off. In fact, being inside an aluminum dry box isn't good enough to stop that. Once we left an aluminum dry box on one of the inflatable boats. A bear crawled aboard at night and tore off the neoprene on top of the box. When that failed, he got back off the boat, doing no damage! That bear knew exactly where the goods were. So, we don't do that anymore! Bears on our only means of transportation - bad idea.

Indeed. There’s a lot more to a rodeo than the one to three nights of competition. There is a whole culture around them. The weekend before with the line dancing contests, chili cook offs, six shooter shooting contest, the staged bank robbery and guessing who the culprits are, and guessing where they hid the loot. The day the cow boys spend with disabled kids riding horses, the huge public steak dinner, the event with the national best then theee nights with regional best, the huge rodeo parade after the final night and the armed forces tribute. We are not giving that up, ever. Period.

Those would be excited bucking stock running for the arena to load on a truck.

First off, If you can't control a baby calf and it died because you ran to save yourself? What business do you have working livestock.
Second, if you actually did work livestock, what the hell are you doing walking inside a chute loading and moving livestock? Nobody I have ever known has heard of anyone walking in a chute while moving livestock. EVER If you fall your dead. What the hell were you even thinking

We move full size bulls and bucking horses with squeeze gates by hand to include steers and calves and have never lost an animal to running head on into a gate.
And if the only animal that has ever charged you is a baby calf, then you haven't worked livestock.

I hope you can find something to pretend you have knowledge instead of simply showcasing a complete lack of.

Keep it up, maybe one day!

Well, you'd have to ban all venues using animals for entertainment. Bye bye zoos, racetracks, SeaWorld etc. Let's call it what it is, an attack on white cowboys and cowgirls.

I'm sure you are a sis gender white male. Check your privilege and let the lesbian trans bi-racials handle this... You bigot!

A great story on a sidenote. A friend of my wife's once had an encounter with some young hotshot cowboy. She gave him some helpful advice which he rebuffed. She said "do you have one of these" and pointed to her belt buckle which read "world champion." She was a world champion barrel racer. Hotshot's jaw dropped.

She also loved her horses dearly.

The pros around me said I did everything exactly right, but go over the wall next time.

This was far enough from civilization or money that there were no squeeze gates, electric branding equipment, or any other such technology. Calves were roped from horseback. Ground crew tied, horned, castrated, and gave injections. One guy per calf. I was one of 5 on ground crew. It was all old school.

The first year was hard work, but fine. The second year, the herd was left roaming due to weather for three extra months, so the calves were big.

It was kind of cool - the operation was all Mormon, so zero alcohol, no swearing of any kind, great comradery, bunkhouse next to the moms with no calves! Just dawn to dusk work. 600 calves later, job done.

I think you have a point here. However, I feel a little differently about rescue animals that can't be released.

Capturing an orca to put in a swimming pool? Sorry. There's nothing good about that.

Anyone sorting large ruff stock uses squeeze gates. There are no alternatives. They are the oldest form of sorting there is.
They are nothing but 8 ft gates on hinges used to manually squeeze livestock to separate them.

And it sounds more like the (Pros) were hazing you. Or they would have never allowed you to walk inside a livestock chute.
    Just food for thought

OMG, nothing would make me happier than shutting Sea world down. They are the worst abusers of animals. They absolutely destroy sentient beings, and it’s horrifying.
