    What consequences can't she understand?

    Why?

    How do you know that?

pregnancies.... that sex /= love all the time, safe sex, STD's.... you name it, and a 14 y.o.'s understanding of it is LIMITED at best. And even if they understand that they can get preggo, they can't take care of said baby as noone hires a 14 y.o. and all the way through 17, there are limitations and rules on how long kids can work, even at McDonalds

    see above

    see above....

listen, I get it.... you think some 14 y.o.'s are fully capable of handling sex, I don't. I have spent a career dealing with 14 y .o.'s and see it first hand, they can't see the importance of anything beyond their own small world....

but I have also seen some 14 y.o.'s that look 18 and are fully developed and if I were 18.... would turn my head and turn me on..... so it's a double edged sword.... you have kids that look like they are ready, but who mentally, aren't. That difference is why an 18 y.o. trying to fawk a 14 y.o. is a predator.... He or she is a lot more capable of working a situation to their advantage while the 14 y.o. is thinking "wow.... an older guy (gal in this case) likes me.... I'm mature" and will do things to keep their boy(girl)friend happy.... even sex.

sexual predator because an adult is targeting a kid and the age difference is key.

"old enough to bleed, old enough to breed" mentality you seem to have is pretty scary....

At 14 she should understand pregnancy, safe sex and STDs to some degree. Even sex ed happens a few years before that. If there is modern medicine, contraception and abortion available then STDs and pregnancy is not as big of an issue as it was in the past. Additionaly, this were two lesbians so pregnancy is a non-issue (altough I dont think lesbians should be treated differently). 14 is the age of consent in some developed nations and 4 year age difference is also not that big. In my opinion law should be involved when there is clear case of molestation, no grey areas and no sex among teens themselves. And surely you can see that morally speaking, this is a grey area? After all, this was also reflected in a very lenient punishment she recieved first time (community service with no record or something similar).

question is would this even make the news if it was a 18 year old male and a 14 year old female. No it wouldn't have
So why is this? Why is special attention given to this story? what makes this different?
Gays want equal treatment under the law but raise hell when the bad is also applied

If you are against statutory rape laws then campaign to have them changed. but why is it you are all of a sudden against those laws when it involves a gay couple? why wasn't the law as wrong when it was a straight couple? why the selected outrage?

So you can get pregnant from lesbian sex? I really didn't know that.

    But why?

Ok but why is that bad?

    I disagree.

Fair enough but if she were 15 and the other 17 I wouldn't really see a problem with it. Seems like its a matter of degree and depends on the circumstances of each case - how intelligent each party was etc.

Perhaps, but I don't see the immediate harm in it.

Yeah well if you want to have sex, you'll want to have sex. Whether its with an 18 year old or another 14 year old, it will happen.

But in the scenario I mentioned, the older person is clearly not using his/her power to coerce the 14 year old. But rather the 14 year old is asking for it. I don't see how that should be felony and not a misdemeanor. It's not a conflict of interest like with a teacher and student. There are mixed reactions from the younger people involved.

Actually, you can have full-time job at 16 in most places.

    Let me post this again.

Two studies have investigated the association between age difference and aspects of females' sexual debut. Abma and colleagues used 1995 NSFG data to examine partner age difference in the context of measuring "wantedness" of first intercourse. Their findings suggested that wantedness is inversely related to the age difference between a young woman and her partner, and that it may be related to her limited control over the situation.6 Furthermore, Leitenberg and Saltzman found that among females who had had first sexual intercourse at ages 11-12, those who had a partner five or more years their senior had an elevated risk of attempted suicide, substance abuse and pregnancy. Among females who had had first intercourse between the ages of 13 and 15, having older partners was associated only with truancy. In contrast, among females whose age at first intercourse was 16-18, having older partners was not linked to these negative outcomes. Thus, adverse effects of partner age difference may lessen as females mature.7

I haven't seen that... but even if that is true.... min wage is NOT taking care of a baby

ok.... I thought we were talking about, IDK, 14 y.o.'s, like the thread is about.

I agree with that. 16-18 is much better than 13-15.... but I still see it as any 18 y.o. that is having sex with a 14 y.o. is a sexual predator

if I read the artricle correctly, they used "partners 5 or more years their senior" for the 11-12 y.o.'s, but I'm assuming that same age senior is what they are talking about with the 16-18 yo's as well.

21-16 is pushing it imo, on sexual predator....

And I posted a study showing that 14 year olds can for the most part handle sex.

What's wrong with 16 and 21? Cold cognition matures adult levels by then.

no, you posted a study that said 14 y.o.s associated with other bad behaviors.... (13-15)

and no 14 y.o. can support a baby (which I have as a top criteria of "handling sex")

sure, in pioneer times... 14 y.o.'s had sex and lived long fruitful lives... but we don't live in an age that 14 y.o.'s can support a kid

so as far as "handling sex" sure... any girl can take a dick and have a baby at 14, just like any boy knows the basics and can impregnate a girl... but 14 y.o.'s are not ready for the responsibilities of sex - ie, handling sex - in today's world.

it's pushing it I said... again.... since a pregnancy can force a dropout and a life of min wage of the 16 y.o.... is that really what you consider "ready for sex" 21-16 is still MUCH better than 18-14 IMO.....

it's not so much about the years of seperation... Hell, I dated a 19 y.o. when I was 36.... it's more about being able to deal with the outcomes.

Back in a time, when school wasn't required, like it is today, that a boy of 16 could make his way in a world without an education through hard physical work, sweat and work ethic.... fine.... but we don't live in that time anymore.

No it said 13-15 was only associated with truancy. Read more carefully.

The flaws in that argument was already addressed. I'm pretty sure most 18-24 year olds can't support a child since 56% of them are still living with their parents.

you don't consider truancy a bad behavior?

    ok.....

that isn't a flaw... since there wouldn't be any highschool dropping out due to pregnancies if that were the case....

just because an 18 y.o. is legally obligated to support hte child doesn't mean he/she actually can effectively. for the most part, 16-21 y.o.'s are making min wage.... that's not taking care of a kid since they require govt assistance to do so...

Look at the word I put an italic on. I said that they can handle sex for the most part.

There is a thing called contraceptives and homosexual sex does not have those consequences. Hell, driving has worse consequences if they screw up, but that does not mean they should not be allowed to.

that's fine... in theory. but for the same reasons that teens get preggers, gay teens will get STDs (not using contraception and BC)

again, it just proves, the younger the teen, the less ready they are. And we also get back to the power difference between a young teen and older teen wanting to get his dick wet or the older (*)(*)(*)(*)(*) licked

Dutch parent tend to let their teens have "sleepovers" with their boyfriends/girlfriends. The Netherlands has the lowest teen pregnancy rate in the world. This to due to their sex education system.

That's why I said it should be a misdemeanor crime. But it's not the same power difference as a teacher with a student.

fine... in the Netherlands.... fawk as many 14 yo's as you want. In America, until that problem is fixed.... teens aren't ready for sex. I'd argue that rule applies to anyone still living at home...

agreed... it's not the same,. but it is more serious than jaywalking type misdemeanors...

you know, ironically, a teacher sleeping with a 18 yo student is not illegal.... the power difference is there, and it will cost the teacher their job/career.... but it's not illegal.

also, a former collegue was 29 screwing a 19 y.o. student. cost him his career. (they're married now)
I was 36, screwing a 19 y.o. (who was graduated at 17, no I never taught her) and I still teach despite a larger age gap....

    sex is very complicated, politically.

Just saying they aren't ready for sex only lends to the problem getting worse.

It's more like Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor type misdemeanor.

It is illegal if that person is in high school.

I'm not saying 14 y.o.'s will be damaged goods for life, I'm saying, the way our societal structure is set up... the mountains of evidence that shows teens don't use protection.... young teens being forced to drop out to take care of baby.... and then getting trapped in min wage jobs for life because of dropping out.... STD's..... teens aren't ready.

that doesn't mean they don't want it. Hell, I think I was a walking hard-on from aged 11-17, but just because I could replicate the mechanics needed to do it... doesn't mean I was ready for all the consequences.

Finding a 14 y.o. girl who is trying to be mature is an easy target for an 18-20 y.o. who just wants to use them to get their rocks off when she is thinking it's a Romeo and Juliet scenario is being sexual predator....

    I
knocking a girl up /= buying them alcohol

    no it's not....

I've always said... "99% of highschool pussay will get you arrested, 100% of it will get you fired..... it's not worth it"

    it's illegal if she's 17 and younger
it's just unethical if she's 18 or older.

big difference. We had a local story of an Athletic Director (female) screwing a 5 star college recruit that played for Bama while he was still in highschool. the Sheriff's office investigated, determined he was 18 at the time and dropped the criminal investigation. but she still ended up getting fired because "adult" or not, he was still a student.

this was in FL. So unless an individual state has a law specifically added.... it's not illegal by default. It's not illegal in Florida

That's because 90% of high schools are teaching students about abstinence and STDs, while fewer than 60% are providing lessons about contraception. We need to focus on that, instead of just saying " don't have sex".

That happens at any age and as I mentioned earlier not always the case. 38% of these sexual relationships are actually casual.

Forgetting about contraceptives, homosexual relationships, and female-major-on-female-minior.

    Yes it is illegal.

Yes its illegal. I'd like to note that in the above poster's example, the woman got 5 years in prison for having consensual sex with a group of 18-19yo students.

Any situation where an adult has power over another person, even another adult, is illegal. It's actually considered a sex crime and can get you on the sex offender registry for life. Another reason I'm against that illegal registry.

it's not here... but I'm not saying it's not illegal in your state. But I have, unfortunately, personally known teachers who have done this. In fact, a former teacher and the (then 19 yo) student he left his wife for are married now. He still lost his job and certificate, but as far as FL is concerned... 18 is an adult and no law (apparently) is on the book that makes it like a prison guard and prisoner.

I would not object to such a law.... but with the A.D. in the story I linked, and the guy at my former school who is now married to the girl..... it just doesn't happen in FL

we also had a principal and an assistant principal. It was/is against school board policy... and he just got his professional certificate suspended for 5 years

    http://www.wjhg.com/home/headlines/134341538.html

he quit during the investigation, but a news article just 2 weeks ago said his (that I can't seem to find or link) said it was suspended for 5 years.

again, nothing ILLEGAL, but unethical.... yes.

    http://www.thv11.com/news/article/2...Court-overturns-state-teacher-student-sex-law

In fact, In Arkansas, the supreme court overturned a law saying consensual sex between a teacher and legal age student was illegal. I honestly think if the child is of legal age, not necessarily 18 but whatever it is in that state, it shouldn't matter if its a teacher or not. Is it ethical? Absolutely not. But criminal? No.

But yes, in some states, it is illegal. The problem comes in where some states label you a sex offender for it. Let's say you move to a state where that's not even a crime. Now you have a man (or woman) banned from teaching or even living or working near a school or day care for doing something her neighbor could be doing every day and it be perfectly legal.

I have some very serious issues with the registry.
