I do. When and how it is appropriate and within my power to do so. I believe in seperation of church and state and vote against measures that would eliminate that. I won't vote for Perry or Whackmann because I hate anyone trying to pander / buy my vote with faith. I voted in favor of gay marraige.

On the other side, you seem reasonable. Why aren't you admonishing atheists to antagonize people of faith? They whine about people not liking them, and then go out of their way to attack something they know is important to others. That's like spitting on people, telling them they're idiots... and then playing victim because "no one likes me!".

How many times have you told a fellow atheists on this board, that they should never attack someone because of their religious beliefs? After all, that's who you want OTHERS to treat you, right? Or is it only everyone else who should respect religious beliefs / lack thereof?

    Just a thought.

Are you saying that the majority show crush the homos, the communists, the islamos, etc?

I agree, even thought I have my own religion.

If you think this then you're really ignorant of the Constitution.

This is a gross violation of the 1st Amendment. Freedom of assembly. Freedom of religion and the free exercise thereof without interference from the government.

Even as a pretty strong libertarian I have to concede there are reasonable time and place restrictions on exercising of Constitutional First Amendment rights.

Do you agree or disagree? It would seem you disagree.

    No sorry its not.

No where in the constitution does it give the right to turn your house into a church.

Sorry but county ordinance has to be upheld. There are regulations as to where you can put a church. That is not a restriction on freedom of religion or freedom of assembly.

You do realize one has to get permits for zoning and has to provide an adequate venue to hold a church service?

Apparently you don't. These are all establish ordinances that do not violate constitutional rights.

If you want to create a church you have to have an inspected and inspected area in which to do so that meets all civil codes of your area. This couple do not.

Therefore there is no violation of rights here.

I can see why some Christians don't like them. They're afraid they might be right.

That may all be so, but it does not change the fact the religion is responsible for a large portion of the resistance to homosexuals.

But that is religion creating governmental laws that effect the lives of people. It does not have to be enslavement big to be wrong.

That was just the first random story I came across, one that actually went to court and ended up with a settlement in her favor. I hear similar stories often, unfortunately they are hard to prove and take to court. This and other forms of discrimination are far too common and accepted by people in our society.

No I do not think most atheists fan the flames, far from it. Take the example in the story above, a simple business card was enough for two women to want to not only have nothing to do with this person, but complain to management and be moved away from here. Simply being an atheist is enough to sway people to those types of reactions. This may be because many believe religion is needed for morality, or that not believing in God is evil, or that by rejecting their beliefs you are rejecting them. You know what the most common atheist billboard is? "Don't believe in God? You are not alone." Why is that? It is because of the resentment towards atheists, others want them to know they are not alone and they don't have to hide.

The difference is that one is applicable, the other is not, how much would you bet if an atheist ran for congress in one of those states such a law would come up. Pity we probably won't see that happen as people do not want to vote for atheists.

You do? Then you agree that all of these things are wrong and should be put an end too.

I certainly will stand up for others when atheists act inappropriately. There are jerks of all kinds, that is universal in all beliefs. I will not however act against them when they say "I think you are wrong".

I have not been active for about three months here, I had no idea the last time I scrutinized an atheist for being inappropriate, I know I have (In a respectful manner following the forums rules of course). But I would not make that statement either there are times when people should be attacked for their religious beliefs, like when they want to stone someone to death (Obviously not our country) or when they want to ban homosexuality. There is a large difference between being an atheist and those types of beliefs.

Regardless it is a dumb law, the real point to the OP is that it is not christian discrimination.

So the concept of freedom of assembly? Nor do you get the concept of the free exercise of religion.

Not at the expense of civil rights. You can toss your rights aside but I treasure those things I've earned.

Where does it stop? Why allow more degradation if our Constitution?

So we agree on much but the statement in bold about atheists not fanning the flames and antagonizing people of faith without provocation? There I disagree vehemently. Let's take a look at new threads & posts on this board in the few days:

"Religion should be considered a psichiatric illnes "
"Is religion a from of evil in disguise? "
"It has come into my concern that religon is terrible - no offence."
"Christians are self-deluded psychopaths who believe in fairy tales."

Watch the board and the posts. You'll see lots of that. I think it would be great if more people were like you and me. What you believe is none of my business and vice versa.
There have been times when atheists have done things and been responsible for policy I find disheartening. Oh well. I will do what I can to fight those things when I can and when I can't, there it is. There have been times when Christians have been responsible for policy I find disheartening. Same thing.

Well in a debate I do think religion causes more harm then good, so I could certainly relate to the notion of a title such as "It has come into my concern that religon is terrible - no offence.", but I harbor no ill will towards a person because they are religious I simply think society would be better off without it. It should go without saying that I have no desire to force such changes on people or society. That is my opinion, I am happy to debate my reasons for such thoughts with anyone who wants to know, I have no desire to force it upon them.

Titles such as "Religion should be considered a psichiatric illness" are obviously absurd and have no place in a debate, they are fanning the flames. I think the key point to the statement in bold is the word most. The worst in people comes out on the internet (At least for what people say), I do not think most atheists act anywhere near that out in the real world to justify such hate.

I am glad to see that we do agree on so much, I had gotten the impression earlier that we would not. Sometimes stating your support openly can do much for the impressions of others. That alone is a great thing.

Freedom of assembly does not mean that you can amass a mob of people and march on the streets shutting down traffic.

You obviously have no idea what the constitution does or does not protect as actual rights.

These people can practice their religion however they wish. What they can't do is impede traffic in on their street or block up their neighbors drive ways.

I don't know about legally, but Christians are definately persecuted in popular art, especially in film. It's been the norm for the last 40 years at least. It scares me how many people, Christians and non-Christians, don't recognize it.

I don't know that this is so much the persecution of Christians as it is government intruding into the private affairs of American citizens. This is yet another example of how government has become FAR too controlling and intrusive...

The point here is that these people are violating their counties ordinance on where a church can be located. This is not a violation of their first amendment rights, it is a common sense infrastructure violation. They do not have the capacity for parking required to hold a religious gathering on they scale they wish to. If they really want to hold a bible study they are going to have to find a location that meets the needs of the group. Blocking up the road and their neighbors drive ways isn't a constitutional right.

They're being fined because they regularly violate a city ordinance by having unsafe numbers of people descend upon a residential area. That gathering is large enough to justify rental of a meeting hall or arranging space in a church.

Obviously not, since one of them reported it. The police there explicitly stated that they don't enforce this ordinance unless a neighbor reports it.

I don't know of any of these organizations that have regular meetings of 50 people who don't just rent a meeting hall or beg space from a church/school for it.

Sorry bucko, but religion doesn't dictate our laws. Our laws are secular, and all faiths are welcome here.
