Why are all the Southern Europeans so into Russian? Y'all would be better served with learning some Germanic languages.

    Note to Russian posters:

My point was: you all want Russia to be a superpower, correct? You are not going to be a *real* superpower when nobody understands what the hell Russia is all about. Not a single person in the West who hasn't got fierce lessons in Russian does understand what the hell Russians are saying.

If you want to be a superpower you need to be active on the cultural level too! Or (1) you simplify your alphabet so everyone can understand it or (2) you behave like a turtoise and achieve nothing!

If everyone should behave so difficult as Russia we would be in a mess of epic proportions.

In Dutch, we also have typical sounds -- but we don't go out and invent silly letters who look like a mosquito (e.g. = ж )! No! We work in the framework provided by the Latin alphabet which everyone understand around the world...

If Russia wants to be a superpower, her culture MUST be accessable by non-Russians -- all I experience = ??? and even more ???

I know English, I think that is a Germanic language :-D

Also I will learn German someday. But now I have enough with Russian and Finnish.

And I don't see so complicate to access to their culture, or you don't know anything about Pushkin, Dostoievsky or Tolstoi? Russia has great authors of different areas of culture.

And the cyrillic is not so hard to learn. And it is true that is the best system to adapt to their phonetic system.

Besides mother lang., we learn in school two foreign languages, it's standard. I consider my self a lucky one 'cause I can combine Russian and Serbian and perfectly understand all other Slavs (we're talking about the number of over 300 million people) when in a position to chit chat. Not bad ;)

Russia is not a superpower, because it needs to abandon their alphabet and culture in order to become a superpower? In this case we reformed our alphabet to Latin alphabet and replaced most of Arabic and Persian loanwords with its Turkic equivalents, but yet instead of us you guys admitted Bulgaria with their Cyrillic alphabet, and Greece with its Greek alphabet so far. Why's that? ;)

What the crap do you write? What's the use for you Estonians use latin alphabet. I know latin alphabet too, but I do not understand what's the hell do they write there. Translate in that case what is written here.
Mongols use cyrillic too, but I do not understand Mongolian as I did not learn it. Teach me how is it possible to understand language using the alphabet only and without learning language.

P.S. Chineses and Japaneses use very archaic and uncomfortable hieroglyphic system of writing. I'm even afraid to imagine a Chinese keyboard. But they are not going to change hieroglyphs for the alphabet because it will mean break with the previous cultural traditions. Maybe you think all Chineses are idiots?

    Agreed.

    Or also this:

Se on ihan lähellä. Kävele ensin suoraan eteenpäin Kauppakatua. Kääny sitten vasemmalle ja jatka Siltakatua. Ylitä joki. Rautatieasema on suoraan edessäsi. In finnish language :-D

    Fellas,...

    What is "to ping"?

When you quote a post here to reply you see something like; "already pinned" and three websites: (1) about some internet-host, (2) about some financial stuff and (3) some sort of webcam sex-site?!

Anyhow I don't feel safe anymore in this thread...

Just quote any post and you'll see what I mean...

IMO, there's no reason to panic, janpor... although I have no idea how did you find that webcam thing, unless you investigated sites (it could be the trace of some spam we had on this thread in the past? ).

Do not panic! This site sometimes has some problems but managers always solve them. In any case I do not see any problems now. I have quoted you normally.

Do you refer to that "Already pinged" thingy? I also noticed it, quite strange that it appears only in this thread. lol

Yes, I made a mistake by calling it "already pinned".

Confusing since "pinnen" is Northern-Dutch for "to redraw money" -- we here, in Southern Netherlands, call it "geld afhalen" (= "to pick up money").

Which is why I'm freaking out... I started thinking the forum was hacked and was trying to find-out my bank account and "pin code" (= password). Luckily I don't use electronic banking on my own computer... I use the family computer for that since it's better secured than mine.

Also, I went to wikipedia and found out that what "to ping" is, Breath...

Very disturbing! And I'm completely paranoid right now...

I don't want to be rude, but we all remember what happend when Estonia placed some Soviet-era statues from the centre of town to the outskirts...

    ...

What if my computer is now part of some sort of network to launch cyber-attacks?! I've seen some documentries about the subject...

To quote a Founding Father of the European Union and former Belgian Foreign Secretary at the United Nations towards Soviet Delegation:

    "Nous avons peur!"
