Government dictates what the private sector must accomodate, while enforcing strict adherence to military appearance regulations.

Would you say the same thing about Orthodox Jews or Eastern Orthodox Christians?

Yet even the military allows for certain exceptions in regards to grooming and garment standards for different religions, like Muslims, Sikhs, and Mormons.

If my company's dress code requires employees to wear Khaki bermuda shorts and a golf shirt with the company logo... its still my company.

    I wouldn't hire her..

    She should seek other employment.

If you work in a law office... they have a dress code.. If you work at Krogers... they have a dress code.

If you work at the Ritz Carlton.. they have a dress code.

    Its pretty straight forward, IMO.

My religion says that I must pray facing North in a specially prepared ceremonial praying chamber every Friday at 2 pm. The ritual takes about 6-7 hours. Do I have the right to sue if I am fired for leaving early on Friday? If I were part of a mainstream superstition, would it seem less crazy of a reason to sue?

If they make every male employee shave, that's not discrimination.

It doesn't matter what his religion tells him, he just needs to find a job that doesn't require a shave.

My Religion is to wake up in the morning and roll in a pile of poo from the Cattlefarm next to my house and be completely nude at all times... if my Employer doesn't like my religion may I sue them for discrimination against my Poo Religion?

No beards, no dreadlocks, no head gear, and worn religious symbols must be "neat, conservative, and discreet"

:mrgreen:Are you kind of saying a business now days has no right when to change its regulations and restrictions. If they own the business they have all the right to do the change when they see fit. Its none of the gov't business. If you believe it is the gov't business to do so then you are saying all businesses should be run by the gov't.

as a liberal who tries to be fair minded....

Just as I dont think we should allow pharmacists to refuse to give people thier medications because of their religious views....

It only seems reasonable that you cant take a job that requires X....and then refuse to do X.

    ....however on the other side....

job requirements that have little to do with the actual job are a bit of a gray area for me....

    Pretty much.

Granted, pharmacies have the power to force their workers to hand out products they have religious issues with. It's just that pharmacies don't usually like to force the issue because of the possible negative publicity and the frivolous lawsuits that might result.

Of course, I'd fire anyone who refused to do their job as I've instructed.

    Ick...

I have no problem with the employee being a Muslim, but he still has to abide by the dress code.
