It's really kind of a stupid process we go through. At some young age we decide or guess what we wish to be when we grow up. Then we spend a lot of time and money preparing for this skill or trade. Then we try to market our knowledge and skills to acquire a job in order to purchase shelter and food and other stuff. Then we become attached to our location, buying a home, getting married, having kids, relatives/friends in the area...and BAM! we lose the job. What happens if in the area we live there are no jobs for our knowledge and skills? Well, I suspect a few younger people who are still mobile will relocate to the jobs. But others who are not willing to migrate in order to maximize our worth, find something out of our field, paying less, not so exciting, maybe commuting 50 to 100 miles each day, etc. I wonder how many people are in this rut?? Yes I call it a rut!

Kids at age 15-16 must be prophets to predict 4 to 10 years in advance what skills to acquire for what jobs might be available. Then they need to be lucky enough to acquire the job, then lucky enough to keep that job. The odds I suspect are not good for finding career happiness and fulfillment. And once we start getting that paycheck...we spend! And the more we earn the more we spend and even go deep into debt 'assuming' we will always be able to service the debt.

The entire relationship of learning a trade or getting an education...finding and keeping a good job...and setting roots in one location...with the world and technology rapidly changing around us...is a formidable challenge!! I am so glad I am old and long out of the workplace...

When you attend university, you're going to obtain a diploma. That diploma opens up new doors. Better jobs. More income. In essence, you're trying to become more valuable to society. With that said, students who are graduating now are leaving with loads of debt. Debt that will take years to payoff. And all that for trying to become a higher wage earner and valuable contributor to society? Sounds like penalizing the students to me...

It's funny because one of the easiest things I could have ever decided -- career wise -- as to what I wanted to be was when I was a child. Growing up that decision became so increasingly difficult. I probably changed my major 3 times when I was in college (and lost my art scholarship doing it) and I still ended up working in a career opposite from my field of study.

I don't think an education is bad. I'm all for education. I just think it should be a good investment. People say that college is a good investment. If it's really a good investment then it should be no different from buying a stock or owning a home. Buying stocks aren't bad investments. It's overpaying for stocks which makes them a bad investment. How do you know you overpaid for stocks? You look at the dividend yield. If you don't get a good dividend then you overpaid. Increasingly, college hasn't really been a good investment as the price for school exceeds the returns people are suppose to be getting.

Nobody forces anybody to go to college. The Government of the United States has absolutely no business interfering in anyone's financial arrangements for the purchase of anything, including college tuition. This is just one more in a long list of things that point directly to the fact that Comrade Obama is nothing but a cheap, pandering, vote-sharking Socialist Democrat.

I can't wait for the next hyperlib to tell me how wrong I am for calling his wonderful President Magnificent a Socialist, because I'll rub his nose in this tuition giveaway crime! You won't find one word authorizing any of it in the U. S. Constitution!

Weak argument. Almost as weak as the 'Nobody forces you to drive' argument (regarding the car insurance debate). Fact of the matter is, you can't expect to get a good job without a college education. Don't believe me? Look around and try to find a job in the corporate world without one.

Get a job in the blue collar world? Good luck with that. The 1% have been shipping those overseas for decades to take advantage of countries with no labor laws, minimum wage, or working conditions.

First off, financial aid and loans have been provided to college students from the government for a long time. Way before Obama entered the office. You're attempt to derail this as an 'Obama Sucks' post fails.

Secondly, if it weren't for the government getting involved with financial loans and aid, there would be thousands of students a year who would be out of luck. Good luck for an inner city kid getting a private bank loan. Hell, good luck for any kid to get a private bank loan during this economy.

Yeah, well you're wrong. See prior paragraph.

Only a ********** thinks an educated population is a bad thing that we should discourage.

    You're living proof why.

So to summarize: the **********s on this thread think higher education is a bad thing that the US should discourage, and the progressives and other sane people think education is a good thing which is critical to the success and prosperity of the future US.

I think that sums up another pathological conservative session.

Are you aware that out of 30 of the fastest growing careers projected, only 7 of those careers require a bachelors degree?

Not only am I aware of it, I think it's irrelevant!

But thanks for confirming your fear and hatred of higher education. You want a shop class America in the future, where subliterate voters believe the lunacy of ********** candidates.

Don't need to. I always know what I'm talking about. If you really want to see, all you have to do is ask.

Based off our past discussions, that's debatable. But, yes, the source please.

Apparently the market hates higher education too. Apparently most of the jobs require at least on the job training.

Thanks for the link. It was just as I suspected. Those occupations with the largest growth that don't require a degree are also some of the lowest paying jobs you can get.

Are all Republicans out for the destruction of the middle class?

This really ticks me off. The reason I decided to come home after I went away from college was because I didn't want ridiculous loans. Now people are going to be able to rack up astronomical loans and never pay them back. All they will have to do is make nominal payments for 20 years and then the taxpayer will have to fund it.

I'm sorry, I thought the idea was to get people working. But maybe would rather have people dependent on unemployment checks and welfare. Also those are the median wages, not average.

The fastest growing jobs which require a bachelors are actually jobs which are in demand: Engineering and Medical. If you go to school for anything else, you have a very low chance of actually getting a job.

LOL Sure seems like it. I'm still trying to gauge what they want the government to be. After *********s ripped Boehner for being a socialist, I pretty much estimate their goal for the government to be just a tad left of Somalia.
