It looks like even Republicans are starting to realize that draconian abortion bans aren't winning them any new friends and are possibly not doing so good with their old friends either?

"The bill failed to get its 33rd vote when Sen. Merv Riepe abstained.

Riepe, a former hospital administrator, previously expressed concern that a six-week ban might not give women enough time to even know they are pregnant and introduced an amendment Thursday that would have extended the proposed ban to 12 weeks.

He also warned his conservative colleagues that they should proceed on the issue of abortion carefully to not galvanize women into voting them out of office.

"We must embrace the future of reproductive rights," he said."

Slightly more moderate Conservative abortion laws were probably their plan all along. Campaign draconian - but then soften for the actual legislation.

This has two advantages: firstly, they can keep the issue on the boil, in perpetuity, to lassoo in the religious/nutty vote. Secondly, as pointed out on the OP, by not delivering draconian crap they won't aggravate an impending electoral backlash.

Where they miscalculated is that there are now enough actual nutters in the GOP, (rather than unscrupulous agents who are simply trying to woo the extremist vote) to upset the apple cart and actually get bay legislation through. Negotiating and pampering these extremists so as to not alternate they moderate voting base is now GOPs greatest challenge.

There’s no such thing as a “draconian abortion ban.”

I noticed on my last ballot that in every race I could either vote for someone who wanted to restrict guns but not abortion, or vote for someone who wanted to restrict abortion and not guns. There wasn't a single candidate that supported the right to both. I prefer no restrictions on either, but I prioritize protecting gun rights over abortion rights (by a lot), so I was left with the options of voting to restrict abortion ...or not voting at all. I voted to protect gun rights. I suspect I'm not the only one voting to restrict abortion while holding my nose, simply because its the only way to vote for other things I consider more important.

I don’t know — telling children they must have their rapists child because they didn’t report it fast enough is fairly draconian.

Not allowing women to have a dead fetus removed is another example.

This is what happens when we allow religious preference to make law.

Nature aborts babies in women every day. They're called miscarriages and they're natural. I don't see why women can't choose to do the same.

How do you elaborate on something which doesn’t exist?

In a nation of 300 million people that’s 300 young children being forced to have their rapists child. Maybe that’s acceptable to some.

Any individual under the age of 17-18 (depending on the state) cannot consent to sex.

Thus any pregnancy is non-consensual. You people are forcing children to have children that they never consented to.

    That isn’t a red herring — it’s evil

Not to mention how these bills are impacting other health care items such as making women carry dead fetuses.

It isn’t guilty if anything — it’s just isn’t entitled to the body of an unwilling person.

If you want to protect fetuses then develop a medically treatment where they can survive outside of the mother and we can completely ban abortion and have them all become test tube babies. Where they will grow into the foster system and then cause crime rates to skyrocket after they age out.

    Deal?

The arguments in favor of abortion are irrational.

MOST Republicans have be been "softer" on abortion than the standard MSM cliches/stereotypes would suggest. While they don's support the standard lw goal of a "Abortions 'r' us" shop on every corner </exageration> many GOPers support abortion because rape, incest. non-viable fetus, or danger to the mother. Many also feel the "6 week" cutoff is too short.

An estimated 30,000 pregnancies due to rape is a red herring…!??

    “Let that sink in…”

Which party are you disagreeing with?
That children cannot consent or that you people are forcing them to birth children?

The vast majority of this nation believe abortion should be an available medical procedure.

You are in the extreme minority. So I will take you saying anything is irrational with a grain of salt.

Because everyone knows it's far more important that you be able to own your semi automatic rifle then it is for women to receive needed health care.
