Rochester police release video of officers pepper-spraying 9-year-old

The latest incident. The police are defending the officers' actions. Who is right and wrong here:

 

What ever happened to good parenting.

Anecdote thats going to be used to perpetuate the false narrative this is a common occurrence. A nation of 320 million and people still don’t realize you can find anecdotes of anything in great number.

 

FYI, bad children can still be even with good parenting.

 

Lets look at 3 very imporat statements in the article here

“indicated she wanted to kill herself and she wanted to kill her mom”

The girl ran away from home

Officers then attempted to get the girl into the vehicle for several minutes as the girl refused, calling for her father, struggling and at one point kicking an officer’s body camera off,



Seems to like this was a DV situation, the girl is or was responsible for it. I’m going to go on a limb and say this girl probably has a behavioral history or a history of LE interaction. I could be wrong, and I might be, but most people don’t go around threating to commit suicide or kill someone.

 

Don't see how pepper spraying a 9 year old girl can be defended.

If you need to pepper spray a kid, you're the one not in control.

*Have arrested MANY angry adults and children for a variety of crimes. Adults can be very difficult to handcuff, if they won't go peacefully you're gonna need help.

 

It may be an anecdote, but it’s indicative of issues with that department and how they train their officers. There should never be a reason to pepper spray a handcuffed child.

 

No its not.

It could just be a couple of idiot officers that aren’t indicative of the training they receive or the department as a whole.

It’s astounding people judge entire departments based on anecdotes. Illogical.

 

It was absolutely a couple idiot officers. That much is obvious. Do you think it’s not a failing of the department that they have a couple of idiot officers on their force that see no better way to handle a handcuffed child than to deploy pepper spray? A chain is only as strong as its weakest link, and a police department is only as competent as its most incompetent officers.

 

What were there, 12 officers?
If 12 officers can't arrest an unarmed 9 year old without resorting to pepper spray there's something seriously wrong.

 

The worst type of ***** cops. The first two were antagonizing the girl and even yelling at witnesses. At one point one of the officers tells her "You're acting like a child." Can you imagine telling a 9 year old that as a cop?

Even when the female officer starts getting her to calm down other officers either chime in with threats or grab her handcuffed arms back getting her riled up again.

These cops need to get suspended.

 

When I was a nine year old we used to pray someone would come around and pepper spray us. That's how bad we had it, kids today don't know how lucky they are!

 

RIGHT! So isn't this a GREAT example of the need for, and appropriate job for a mental health team? Such work should no longer be the responsibility of the police. It should be reallocated to a mental health team. And then funding for police should be divided appropriately between police and mental health since the police aren't needed for that job any longer.

That is called "defunding the police".

 

Many many years ago I was involved in a domestic incident that caused a neighbor to call the police. Two cops showed up. One cop, who clearly lived in the gym and looked like a steroid user was immediately in my face in a very aggressive manner suggesting he was looking for a reason to use force. I think the only thing that prevented me being initially attacked by the cops as a pro forma police response was the presence of witnesses. Nonetheless, they were clearly ramping up to use force at which point a police woman showed up and immediately calmed down the male cops. The lesson I learned first hand is there is a serious need for female police officers.

 

And a need for some police training on what it means to "serve the community".

 

I watched the video that was released and all I could think is do these cops have kids of their own? Because if they do then they should know that that’s not how you handle a crying 9 year old. She’s a scared kid in need of help, not someone who is going to threaten to kill you.

 

It should be used as a training video in that department as to what NOT to do, and clearly what's NOT going to be tolerated.

 

Just another reason why I will never live within a country mile of a blue area. Total dysfunction from the top to the bottom. I don't know why Democrats are completely incapable of running a decent society but we see evidence of it every single week.... story after story after story. This simply does not happen in neighborhoods like the one I live in.... EVER. Quit complaining about your cops. You own the politicians, IT IS THEIR JOB TO MANAGE THE COPS. Every time there is another "controversy" regarding cops in a blue neighborhood, you are just providing more evidence that your politicians are incompetent. It is also an indictment of Democratic voters who pulled the lever for them.

 

Hope so. This is the type of thing you put up with if you want a community that doesn’t trust you.

 

We counted ourselves lucky if a skunk would spray all dozen of us in our cardboard box.

I live in a County with an elected Sheriff and my guess is you do as well. Regardless of political party, a Sheriff can not be reelected if their police force has incidents the public finds objectionable. The head of law enforcement in large urban areas needs to be elected IMHO, not appointed.
