Typical RW MO: Gain power, f up governing, and then point fingers and claim: See, I told you government doesn't work. Rinse and repeat.

Fitch Ratings downgraded the trustworthiness of the US government saying successive standoffs over the nation’s debt ceiling and rising federal debt have cast doubt on the US’ ability to meet all its payment obligations.

House GOPer Acknowledges McCarthy May Need Dems To Avoid Shutdown His Right Flank Is Thirsting For

If his impeachment inquiry noise-making gambit doesn’t work in swaying far-right House Republicans to get in line and move forward with appropriations bills that are at least passable in the Democrat-controlled Senate, then House Speaker Kevin McCarthy may have to grovel at House Democrats’ feet — again.

That’s what at least one member of his Republican caucus acknowledged this week while lawmakers are home on August recess. The House wrapped up for the month weeks ago after only having passed a handful of appropriations bills out of committee that are dead on arrival in the Senate. This delay in the appropriations process is the result of more hostage-taking from far-right Republicans who are mucking up the normal appropriations process by tacking riders onto appropriations bills that fan culture war flames, like restricting abortion access for members of the military or gutting diversity initiatives.

The Crazy couldn't force a cataclysmic default on the debt so now they're aiming for a government shutdown.

House Republicans subpoena Citibank over info shared with FBI after Jan. 6

WASHINGTON — House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan issued a subpoena to Citibank on Thursday, demanding information about whether the bank gave law enforcement information about customer transactions in the days surrounding the attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

The subpoena, obtained exclusively by CNBC, came after Jordan previously requested that several financial institutions, including Citibank, provide the information voluntarily. They include Bank of America, JPMorgan, PNC, Truist, U.S. Bank and Wells Fargo.

Citibank was the only bank that had not voluntarily complied with the committee’s request, according to a source familiar with the investigation.

The bank’s lawyers told the committee it would only do so under a subpoena, according to Jordan. A Citibank spokesperson did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment.

    Agreed.
McCarthy Says Short Term Bill Is Prob Needed To Avoid Shutdown Far-Right Is Risking

It appears House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) is resigned to the fact that his conference’s far-right flank will likely continue to hold the appropriations process hostage when the House returns next month.

At one point before Congress left for August recess it appeared as though the House speaker was trying to convince hardliners to get in line and quit their shutdown-flirting shenanigans by offering them a carrot: the prospect of an impeachment inquiry into President Biden.

But that whole gambit seems to be out the window. Both Punchbowl and NBC News reported Wednesday that McCarthy acknowledged to House Republicans during a conference call earlier this week that Congress will probably have to pass some sort of stopgap bill to avoid a government shutdown come October. McCarthy reportedly said he thinks “it will be necessary to buy time,” in NBC’s words. It was not clear how much time he’ll push for in a potential stopgap bill.

House Republicans Begin Investigating Willis Before Trump’s Atlanta Booking

House Republicans took aim on Thursday at the Georgia prosecutor bringing a sweeping felony racketeering case against former President Donald J. Trump for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election, moving to investigate the woman pursuing the case just hours before Mr. Trump was to be booked at an Atlanta jail.

Representative Jim Jordan, Republican of Ohio and chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, announced he was opening an inquiry into Fani T. Willis, the Fulton County, Ga., district attorney, questioning whether she had collaborated with Biden administration officials and targeting any federal funding her office receives.

Wasting time and resources investigating the investigators. And Putin smiles.

“Turning first to the question of motivation, it is noteworthy that just four days before this indictment, you launched a new campaign fund-raising website that highlighted your investigation into President Trump,” he wrote.

So? Should Trump be investigated for sending out fundraising material each time he gets indicted? Or for goading the judges in to throwing him in jail so he can fundraise off that?

Gym and two other congressional Repub nitwits (Comer) being one, are requesting info from Merrick on Hunter. Must be they think Trump is getting too much negative attention related to his multiple indictments. And his poll numbers are slipping so it's time to hit the Hunter drum.

McCarthy Dangles Hunter Biden Probes In Front Of Hardliners Risking Shutdown

Members of the House Freedom Caucus endangered House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s (R-CA) plan to avert a shutdown before the House even returned from August recess. Now the House speaker is going to comedically desperate lengths to urge them away from mucking up the appropriations process upon return.

Earlier this month, McCarthy and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) announced that they’d tentatively discussed passing a short term spending bill to avoid a shutdown when money runs out at the end of September. McCarthy privately told members of his caucus that he believed a stopgap funding bill might be necessary to buy the party some time. In the weeks leading up to the August recess, his right-flank began flirting with a shutdown by passing a stack of dead-on-arrival appropriations bills stuffed with culture war riders, thus significantly delaying the process.

Republican Senators Complain About ‘Raucous’ House Colleagues Threatening Shutdown

A handful of Senate Republicans on Capitol Hill Wednesday made it clear that they think their colleagues on the other side of the building would ultimately be the ones responsible for any potential government shutdown.

Democrats have been pointing the finger at far-right House Republicans for some time now, and recently adopted new language to make it clear whose fault a “MAGA shutdown” would be.

The messaging appears designed to help shield President Joe Biden’s White House from any blame if the federal government does come to a halt.

But strategy or not they are not alone in their perception.

“I’m convinced it’s happening,” Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-ND) told reporters on Wednesday when asked if he was worried about a government shutdown.

The Crazy is not confined to House Repubs.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Top defense officials are accusing Republican Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville of jeopardizing America’s national security with his hold on roughly 300 military promotions, raising the stakes in a clash over abortion policy that shows no signs of easing.

Tuberville brushed off the criticism, vowing he will not give in. “We’re going to be in a holding pattern for a long time,” he said, if the Pentagon refuses to end its policy of paying for travel when a servicemember goes out of state to get an abortion or other reproductive care.

It’s a classic Washington standoff with rippling effects across the country, placing the lives of servicemembers effectively on hold as they await what has traditionally been routine Senate approval for their promotions.

McCarthy pressure hits a boiling point

Kevin McCarthy is facing the greatest peril to his speakership since he clawed his way into the job eight months ago, with multiple factions of his party feuding and a looming revolt ahead during the battle to fund the government.

Ultra-conservative members of the House GOP are talking in unsubtle terms about turning on McCarthy if he does not take a hard line in negotiations with the Senate and the Biden administration.

More centrist Republicans, too, are increasingly fed up with McCarthy’s efforts to placate the far right. They want him to stop giving ground to lawmakers they see as holding the party hostage to unrealistic demands.

McCarthy is a political survivor — even his critics cannot deny that his skilled nature as an accommodator, his persistence in winning over even his most dogged critics and his deep bench of allies have kept him alive in this highly fractured Republican Party.

GOP House Speaker McCarthy endorses Biden impeachment inquiry

Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Tuesday backed an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden.

“Today I am directing our House committee to open a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. This logical next step will give our committees the full power to gather all the facts and answers for the American public,” McCarthy said at a press conference.

The House speaker claimed Tuesday that Biden had lied to the American people about his knowledge of his family’s foreign business dealings.

Despite recent public doubts, Senate Republicans are mostly unconcerned with the House's newly announced impeachment inquiry of President Joe Biden.

Instead, they see Speaker Kevin McCarthy's Tuesday announcement as a possible way to address their bigger concern: staving off a government shutdown on Sept. 30. Several GOP senators speculated that moving forward with the inquiry was a way for McCarthy to
placate conservatives, who have signaled they are open to temporarily shuttering the government if their demands aren't met.

Senate Repubs see the Biden impeachment inquiry for what it is. A smokescreen for Trump's indictments.

Repubs are the masters of the self-fulfilling "government failure" prophecy. They don't believe government can usher in positive change so they make it so when they can.

Rep. Lauren Boebert apologizes after getting kicked out of show and falsely denying she vaped

DENVER (AP) — Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert apologized Friday after getting kicked out of a musical play in Colorado last weekend for disruptive behavior and then falsely denying she had been vaping.

The apology came a day after surveillance video emerged that showed Boebert vaping at her seat in a Denver theater. Her campaign earlier denied the theater’s contention that she had been vaping.

The normally combative Boebert said in a Friday statement that her actions were not meant to be malicious or cause harm “but the reality is they did.”

    https://apnews.com/article/lauren-boebert-theater-vaping-186d748f754d87a7441268744b0076cf

She got caught in a lie and was forced to issue an apology. I only note this because by coincidence my wife was at the theater when it happened.

House GOP in open warfare over doomed spending plan

As House Republicans began ripping apart their party’s latest spending proposal on a conference call their own leaders held to promote it, the plan’s two main defenders had to hang up the phone. They had flights to catch.

Reps. Dusty Johnson (R-S.D.), who represented centrists, and Byron Donalds (R-Fla.), who negotiated for conservatives, thought they had found a deal that would at least unite the fractious GOP — even if it couldn’t pass the Senate and avert a shutdown. Minutes after Johnson and Donalds left that Sunday night conference call, however, their work imploded, with a half-dozen House conservatives railing against it.

House GOP pulls key vote to advance stopgap government funding bill

The House of Representatives canceled a scheduled key procedural vote Tuesday on a temporary government funding bill hashed out by Republicans.

The House GOP leadership pulled a vote originally scheduled for 2:30 p.m. ET to advance a stopgap measure to fund the federal government through Oct. 31, according to an updated legislative schedule published by Democratic Whip Katherine Clark.

The U.S. faces a government shutdown if Congress fails to pass a temporary funding measure by midnight Sept. 30.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., supports a temporary funding measure to keep the government running. But he has faced opposition from hard-right members of the GOP.

McCarthy fails key House stress test as he seeks government shutdown stopgap

WASHINGTON — House Speaker Kevin McCarthy failed a crucial test Thursday of his ability to unite his fractured Republican caucus as he tries to rally support to pass a spending bill aimed at avoiding a government shutdown at the end of the month.

The House failed to pass a measure to set the rules for debate on a Pentagon funding bill, and served as a dress rehearsal for the bill itself, which had been expected to come to the House floor later Thursday.

Such measures are traditionally approved by wide margins.

More importantly, the vote would have rallied House Republicans around a shared cause and built momentum for a much more difficult vote in the coming days: Passing a government spending bill in time to avert a potentially damaging government shutdown set to begin Oct. 1.

House recesses after Defense bill, government funding plan implode

WASHINGTON — House Republican leaders on Thursday sent the chamber into recess, likely dashing hopes of passing a bill to fund the government in the coming days.

The schedule change was an embarrassing failure for Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a Californian who needs to unite his fractured Republican caucus to avoid a government shutdown at the end of the month.

Earlier in the day, the House failed to pass a measure that would have set the rules for debate on a Pentagon funding bill, which had been expected to come to the House floor for a final vote later Thursday.

A rules vote typically serves as a dress rehearsal for final votes, giving leadership a sense of where support stands.

Pentagon funding bills are traditionally approved by wide margins.

We have cause to be afraid of those who swallowed copious amounts of lies and then acted on the belief in them by voting for the likes of Paul Gosar, MTG, Gym Jordan, Donald Trump, James Comer, Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, Louie Gohmert, Matt Gaetz, etc. A circumstance JFK never imagined in his worst nightmares.
