The economy CRASHED in 2008 and it RECOVERED afterwards.

When people DIE they are unable to RECOVER afterwards.

WITHOUT people there is NO ECONOMY!

Take care of the people and let the economy take care of itself.

You have to get a balance on it. Try to stop most people being infected but also keep the economy going sufficient to at least feed the population. If you release safeguards too early more people are infected and you are back to square one. Unfortunately the US has almost certainly allowed it to become widespread and will soon see the results. They still have only tested 5,000 people! They ought to have been getting their hospitals ready and stocking up on the medical equipment they will need to save as many people as possible Half of the people entering Italy's hospitals are under 65 and many have previously good health.

If you don't think socioeconomic status has an effect on health, wellbeing and death rate then you might be one of those pesky far right extremists.

I agree, to a point. We should take a measured approach. Be cautious, but don't overreact.

Really? Did you tell obama that when 1000 people a month were dying from H1N1?

Oh, but he does CARE! He's shut the door to anybody coming from Europe! (So, what any Yank' willd do is buy a ticket to the US through Canada ...)

Jerko evidently does not understand that the gravest present danger is from those contaminated ALREADY in the US - the outbreak in China is more than two months old. ...

Coronavirus Map (as of 11 March) estimations:

Situation in the US as of 12 March (that has been reported) found here.

Perhaps you are reading too much of the BS that comes across either the TV or the Internet. They are not the best places to look.

The real work-in-progress should be happening where people vote into state and national legislations their representatives. These latter are responsible for "what their people want". But, do they even know*?

Instead, politics in America has become "Lemme see, now what's-in-it for me?"

Or, more specifically, "Show me da muney ... !"

*PS: Half the population was for impeachment, and half against. So, the Senate majority let the Dork off the hook. Neither did the Senate majority vote to have further evidence entered into consideration. (Which was the work that the HofR had done to show he was convictable.)

This is what most of them do not grasp.

    03/01 - 75 cases
    03/02 - 100 cases
    03/03 - 124 cases
    03/04 - 158 cases
    03/05 - 221 cases
    03/06 - 319 cases
    03/07 - 435 cases
    03/08 - 541 cases
    03/09 - 704 cases
    03/10 - 994 cases
    03/11 - 1301 cases

That is an EXPONENTIAL increase in the number of cases and we are still nowhere near doing enough tests.

Compared to the rest of the world we are far behind when it comes to figuring out just how many people are infected by Covid-19.

Until we KNOW how far it has spread it will be impossible to know what degree of containment is necessary.

The longer it takes to gather this knowledge the further it will have gone.

Time lost means lives lost that could otherwise have been saved.

Well, that is enough to get a "good idea".

The problem is that even if the Health Authorities in a nation should know who is infected and where infections are happening, what's there to do.

In France, which had the first signs of infection more than three weeks ago, the hospital beds are today all full of those who definitely are infected and have a real chance of dying.

There is only so much that one can do without a verified agent that can kill the disease. And, though there is one being tested, there is no sign as of yet that it is truly functional.

So the truth is here, and has been shown amply on the map I posted above of real incidences of infection. To which must be added today's account of total deaths in Italy (the most infected population in Europe) of around 821 individuals as of 11/03/2020, the highest rate so far in Europe.

Nearly 200 died in the last 24 hours. So, when the contaminations start, they go very quickly.

Still, a bit of good news from China. Yes, the contaminations started accumulating very seriously but they have (as of recently) stopped their acceleration. Which some think is a tapering-off of the virus' infection rate ...

Yes, but China reports that the rate of infection has tapered off - which is, so far, the best news from this very sad story. I think, but I cannot find a valid verification of that fact ...

You can isolate them. You know how widespread it is. In South Korea they have been testing 10,000 a day but they have been doing more than that. They have been treating everyone who is infected and giving them a medicine which appears to allow Zinc to kill the virus which may be the reason why their death rate is so low.
But this is no surprise. China showed us that the only way this virus can be stopped is isolation. The EU did not do this continuing even to allow flights and holidays to Italy after it was known they were taking off. Containment is the only answer for this virus. If your hospitals become overwhelmed because due to lack of initial containment everyone gets it around the same time, many many more people will die than needed to. When people become really ill, the difference of life or death often depends on quality care. Italy is already needing to make decisions as to whom it will give a chance.
You need to keep the virus out of your country and contain it in it at the very earliest time. We have not done this and will pay a price. This is what we all need to get moving on like the Asian countries did. Hungary seems to be the only European country thinking in this way. This time its nationalism may help it. Contrary to what we hear face masks do appear to help to limit the spread but really it should be working from home and everything shut but pharmacies and Supermarkets like Italy has done. I heard an Italian begging us to do that last night in order that we do not experience the hell they are going through where they are unable to give so many the help they need to save their lives - and that is not just people with the virus. It is people with other illnesses like heart attacks as well. They say we have no idea what they are going through and should get off our asses if we do not want to experience it ourselves.

I'd like to see more effective and honest communications surrounding the testing for one. We are so far behind other countries when it comes to testing, and there still isn't a clear understanding of where to go or how to go about testing.

I'm not sure how any of this responds to my post. Liberals are generating angst and fear. Simply role the tape of the Pelosi et al response to the President's address last night. The woe, the worry, it has zero to do with finding the path to civility and only the path to fear, and dread. And it's frankly shocking that liberals are so self interested that they would worry more about their future power than the health and safety of the nation they intend to dictate to. Perhaps the idea that "show me da money" as you wrote represents those who our liberal folks are attempting to insight. Perhaps that should provide you a reason for some pause.

I'm not big on testing. What purpose does it serve to test everyone? Test the sick to determine proper treatment but that's it.

The "Known infection" rate is dropping. Can't measure something you don't know about and common sense tells you that for every case reported or verified through testing, there's probably 2 or 3 that aren't. Not everyone is going to rush into the hospital for a COVID-19 test, especially if they are healthier and the virus isn't totally kicking their ass.

I didn't suggest that everyone be tested. But as it stands, it is unclear where to go to be tested or how many tests are available.

If you show up at a hospital with severe symptoms of corona you will be tested. Nobody else needs to bother. To them it's just another cold.

The tests will eventually help with getting better statistics, a much more accurate denominator, but that's about it.

You would think the OP would be posting this and chastising the Chinese? But I guess he thinks the U.S. had something to do with those poor folks in Europe ¯\_(º¸º)_/¯

I can see the logic since the majority of confirmed cases originated in Europe but I'm in the camp of treatment not containment so it's not a containment so it's not a policy I endorse.
