The Boers were transporting slaves to the culture in the south which existed hundreds of years before the mayflower hit the rock.

That is surpressed history, but the existence of fort caroline nearly 50'years before the mayflower begins to expose a much larger and long hidden truth.

    http://m.ibtimes.com/fort-caroline-...-north-america-may-be-located-georgia-1557254

Fort Caroline was in place 56 years before the Mayflower, and the French origins go far further back than any might think.

Slavery was colorblind until the Atlantic slave trade. During the times of the ancient Romans and Hebrews (among others), those who were sold to slavery were mostly prisoners of war or criminals of a crime. For the ancients there were only two ways of dealing with prisoners, to kill them or to sentence them to labor. They did have dungeons and prisons, however the life expectancy of those in an ancient prison were lower than people on death row in the US today. So it was essentially a situation where you either have them killed or have them sentenced to labor.

The Atlantic trade slave was unique to the slave trade of the ancients in that the vast majority of those sold were not prisoners for a crime they committed, but were sentenced to labor for their marketability

There are actually many variables to why slavery ended in North America, the 13th amendment abolishes involuntary servitude in the US "except as punishment for a crime". For its time this abolished the vast majority of slavery in North America, because again those who were slaves as the result of the Atlantic slave trade were mostly people sentenced to slavery for their mere marketability (NOT as punishment for a crime). Slavery was mostly abolished through economic advances, our law on involuntary servitude is closer to the laws of the many (but not all) ancients who practiced slavery, in that we limit slavery to punishment for crimes, however we do not practice slavery abroad like the ancients. Slavery is not a common practice (even as punishment for a crime) in our society for two reasons.

    1. is our advances in asylum, we have more advanced ways of separating criminals from the rest of society than what the ancients had, and 2. Industrialization and market evolution. Unlike the many periods of the past, our markets have advanced to the point where slavery is no longer a necessity. It's the same reason why the norther states abolished slavery before the southern states.

Before industrialization and before capitalism, slavery was a necessary part of the economy. In the modern times we live in, slavery is more harmful to the economy than it is helpful

Slaves were imported into the European settlements that are now the states of MA, NH, NY, CN, RI, and PA starting in the period of 1620s to 1650s.

This thread is a great deal more informative about modern white America then it is about slavery. Sick society.

So...you were dead wrong...and you do not have the spine to acknowledge it.

That puts you on a much lower rung of the ladder than Kaepernick.

    Okay. That happens.

but so what?? people were born owning slaves and it was accepted all around the world for 1000's of years. Liberals imagine that if they had been born slave owners they would have been instant abolitionists. Absurd!!. For modern whites to feel guilty about it is insane. Should whites and blacks feel guilty about all the evil things their ancestors did for 1000's of years?? Only liberals would think so.

Most of the folks who signed the Declaration of Independence and about half the members of the Continental Congress were slave owners.

so??? it was natural at the time and accepted all around the world. A liberal will pretend that if he had been born a slave owner in the 18th Century he would have instantly seen the light and gave his life to abolish slavery.

Jefferson and the others created and lived on the cusp of history. For them it was a huge revolution to believe that they themselves could be free, let alone real slaves after 1000's of years of slavery. But even so, Jefferson's original draft of the Constitution was more about slavery than taxes. He and the others knowingly fired the shot heard around the world even when they had no idea if it would hit its target or the personal consequences they would suffer would be deadly. To say that our Founders were born slave holders is true, but it is also true that they did more to set in motion freedom for slaves than all human beings or any other group in all of human history. Certainly they did more than any of us would have had the intelligence and courage to do given the times in which they lived and the consequences they faced; so lets all thank God for these incredible heroes who, most recently, freed 1.5 billion from communism with their undying influence.

Those among us who imagine they are morally superior to the Founders are fools too stupid to know they inheritied their wisdom without so much as a drop of blood, a calorie of effort, the inkling of a thought, or an ounce of morality.

Yes indeed. Plenty of good people in the US. Sadly this website seems to encourage their worst instincts.

You are correct - I forget the exact dates but for a period of almost 10 years, we exported more guns to Africa than we did our new colonies in what would be come America.

Still no excuse for shooting so many black people today though.

    Incorrect!

Abolition of slavery was enacted (and at times failed) throughout history by many nations. The United States was one of the last of the major nations to outlaw it...and we did so kicking and screaming that we shouldn't. In fact, we fought one of the bloodiest wars ever as a result of attempts to do so. (Please...do not start that "the Civil War was not about slavery" nonsense, because that has been shot out of the water every time it starts.)

Some individuals may have been enlightened...but as a group, the founding fathers were not in any way opposed to slavery...and certainly did NOT do "more to set in motion freedom for slaves than all human beings or any other group in all of human history."

Nice thought. I wish it were true...or even close to true. But it isn't.

(Google "time line for abolition of slavery.")

    - - - Updated - - -

    That was my point.

I regret my wording. I took the low road in response to their taking the low road. As we have been reminded often during this campaign...when the opponents take the low road...take the high road.

I should have used your wording.

No African-Americans alive today were ever slaves so why does the history of slavery even matter? It is in the past.

The American Civil War was certainly not about slavery. The American Civil War was about taxes.

And yeah, slavery was not accepted all around the world when USA became independent and the US Founding Fathers were no heroes of slaves in any way. What was that guy even talking about? Jesus Christ. ( And the Founding Fathers defeated communism? They freed the world from Royal Families too didnt they? )

The British compensated slave owners in the West Indies and other places. Liberals act as though it was wrong for the British to compensate slave owners but that is ridiculous because the slave owners did have to buy the slaves in the first place and it would not have been fair to just expect them to take such a huge loss with no compensation. Why didnt the Northern States just compensate the slave owners if they wanted to end slavery like the British did? Is it because the Civil War actually had nothing to do with freeing slaves and was all about taxes.

Britain ended slavery in 1838. USA ended slavery in 1865. Britain compensated slave owners for their losses - why didnt the Yankees offer to compensate Southern slave owners?

No but I like history so I knew that. Slavery isn't even banned by the Constitution. If you are a convicted felon, you are legally allowed to be a slave, even today.

Well yea. POW. Convicted felons too. Mostly POWs, but felons also. I know it sounds like Trump, but it's actually true, seriously, look it up. After White people showed their interest in slaves, Africans started using slavery as punishment for more and more things, practically anything. It actually ruined their economy. Because the African economy started revolving around slaves for foreign goods. So when the Europeans banned the slave trade, the entire African continent collapsed.

People like to say the Civil War was fought to free the slaves. Makes them feel good. Makes it seem like the war was worth something, and justified. Funny thing is the North/Union invaded the South/Confederacy but the Union still had slavery in Delaware, Maryland, Missouri, Kentucky, and even New Jersey. So it was OK for the North to have slaves but they fought a war to free the slaves, in the South? And when the Civil War was over and all the slaves in the Confederate states were free...the Union still had slavery.

Good post. Also when the US banned the slave trade, they didn't hardly do anything to stop it. Fast sailing ships from the New England states were refitted as slavers and continued to go to Africa and pick up slaves and bring them back to the Southern states. The money was very good in the slave ship business.

It's interesting. Learning this has destroyed all of my arguments against slavery and those who have partaken in it. If only I'd known that white people weren't the only ones who practiced it, I would have never talked negatively about the south or the American slave owners. Clearly it's not bad at all if other people have done it too. I mean, that idea isn't just the reasoning used to excuse all Donald Trump's dishonest and fraudulent behavior while you simultaneously vote for him because you're sick of dishonesty and corruption, it's how you justify anything you want to do that people don't think you should.

Has anyone told this to the people who were slaves? Do they understand their forced servitude isn't as bad as they thought because practically everyone has taken part in slavery throughout history?

How about the people who protest slavery? Did anybody tell them? They should know. It might help them put things in context and figure out that slavery really isn't a bad thing at all. They will have to learn about the Law of Mass Negativity Reduction, which states that the more people who take part in a practice, the less bad that practice is by sheer force of numbers.
