Slavery in the US was not only legal it was supported by the US Supreme Court and an act of Congress when people started to complain about it in the 1850s. The South had turned the crops of tobacco and cotton into a billion dollar industry. Northerners started complaining about slavery because in their climate they could not grow these big money crops. I'll bet that if the North could make billions off slavery like the South did... we would not have had the Civil War. And slavery would have lasted longer.
