I don't know if "faith" is the right word, but I generally believe they are a reasonable accurate measure of relative unemployment. This is for a number of reasons, but in part because the numbers don't act in ways that suggests they are being manipulated.

For example, if the numbers were being manipulated, we'd have seen them going down before the last election. Instead they went up. Why would Obama or the Dems manipulate the unemployment numbers up prior to the klast natioanl election, knowing they'd get hammered for it?

No one has been able to explain that one to me.

Maybe they didn't get desperate enough to risk being caught manipulating the numbers until now? After all, in 2010, we were hearing the same ole leftist rhetoric we're hearing today... except then it was the Tea Party who couldn't win and now it's the GOP who can't win.

I honestly believe Dems have been drinking their own kool-aid... until lately. With so many of his staffers bailing and sitting Dems in congress announcing they're not running... it's nearly impossible to convince folks Obama has a second term all sewn up.

The unemployment numbers may not be very accurate. . .but if the same criteria are applied over the years, they are an efficient way to demonstrate the trend.
However, the criteria are different over time (i.e., Reagan changed the criteria to demonstrate a steeper fall in unemployment that would normally have been observed). But the criteria have stayed the same under Bush and Obama. . .and clearly it is demonstrating a huge loss of jobs under Bush (in the last 2 years of his administration) and a big jump in job creation (although not enough to recover completely from the huge loss that occurred under Bush) trend under Obama.

But here is a good example of "fraud" in unemployment numbers:
