Tell me about it. I have been to my grandfather's native town of Stavanger twice and my heart aches to return

My point is that through ether direct or indirect means overpopulation will affect everywhere. Famine, disease, war, global warming... it's not so far from your doorstep

Well, I, for one, hate the stench of sardine canneries.

I think New Zealand will only move an inch or 2 in 50 years :)

I'd guess pretty much in the same place it is now. Plate tectonics are a powerful geophysical dynamic; but it still takes millions of years to really show any movement of continents and islands. I wouldn't look for it to be too far from where it is now. Unless it sinks.

Seriously though, if New Zealand doesn't come up with something of value to offer the world within the next 50 years..something..anything, then they'll default and cease to be. No loss.

I got the distance wrong, but the upside down perspective is right (or left)

'Fraid not. When you have dug up your backyard and exported all its contents, you will be clamouring to come here to find something to eat.

That's not the problem. As it so happens most of the stuff we can dig up and flog abroad is in non-arable areas so it's not really of note to people in the cities. I remember working in an area during the 1970s which had only pastoral properties between Woomera and Andamooka but some geological surveys had found promising traces. The pastoralists were concerned that they'd be under the pump, mind you the stocking rate out there was pretty low. They were right though - http://www.roxbydowns.com/

But the real problem is that we are using up arable land for housing.

As for coming over for something to eat - http://www.canterburyfresh.com/

Of course you have a food surplus, 50 percent of your population is over here getting fed by the Australian taxpayer.

    You wish.

You remember the joke that is just so true?

When a Kiwi migrates to OZ he raises the IQ level on both sides of the Tasman.

But apparently that is not as true as Ockers might hope it to be. For example, if 50% of our population was in OZ, that would mean we have a population of 1 million.

Our Census Bureau tells us we have 4.3 million here in NZ. Something tells me you are exaggerating for effect.

Though I have no idea what the effect is.

My sources tell me you are just poisoning your arable land. And your rivers and seas.

Not to worry. We will keep you alive.:-D

Sure, thats why most of the Kiwis over here are going into such intellectually demanding jobs like pub bouncers, brickies labourers and factory hands.
Maybe it just seems like 50 percent given the New Zealand penchant for declaring themselves extremely loudly wherever they go.

    Jeez youre sharp mate.

Of course you dont. Carry on.

One of the problems New Zealand will have is that millions of starving Australians will cast us a covetous eye.

We are in no physical danger from China which will simply buy us if the need arises.

Australia on the other hand couldn't afford us, especially in competition with the Yellow Peril.

Which raises an interesting question. Will we have to allow the Chinese military to station itself in our green isles in order to keep the Aussies at bay?

On its head the world turned is.

Threads about this little insignificant country are out of proportion to its importance, which is nil.

    Hard to say.

In all probability it will exist very much as it does today.

On the other hand, New Zealand and Australia are pulling closer all the time. I doubt it will be long before we have a single currency, and we are actively working on consolidating our legal systems. Considering the ease of travel between the nations, the difference between the two nations might become largely academic. I doubt New Zealand would become a state of Australia, but the two forming a union would not be out of the question.

Oddly, we regard America as a nil entity.

Its probably a function of distance and the fact that the Chinese are our 2nd largest trading partner.

We trade with the US less and less. Which is as it should be. China is a country that fits better with our ideals of not invading other countries.

    Blessings are upon us.

There is no appetite here with forming a political union with a faux America.

CER is as far as we will go.

    Trade your britches off.
