Now I know that's not true.

It might not have huge support, but to say there is "no appetite" is silly. Just look at the comments on this article:

    http://www.interest.co.nz/news/have-your-say-should-new-zealand-join-australias-federation-states

    - there is a minority who are supportive of a union or statehood.

Still, my basic point was that 50 years from now, anything can happen. 50 years ago, who would have thought the EU was a possibility? Australia and New Zealand are infinitely more compatible than, say, Germany and Greece, and we are pulling closer.

The appetite would seemingly not last beyond the soup course.

But I sense your anxiety to get your hands on the Bloody Slow Cup.

    Seemingly not.

    It still exists, though.

New Zealand is favoured by climate change. It is probably even now the most efficient producer of food in the world. And climate change will turn currently unproductive areas into productive areas of goodies the world will pay for.

China knows that. This is why it is trying (unsuccessfully) to insinuate itself into our land ownership. That is why our major primary-producing companies have a large presence in China.

We do not need a political alliance with Australia. We have never wanted one and do not need one now. Our people are overwhelmingly against it. If it happened, we would have to accept a miserly reward for our production. That, of course, would make no sense.

I see that is a superb argument uncontested by those that hope to live here some day.

    Awryly,

Sorry to read about the earthquake near Christchurch. Hope everything gets sorted out in a hurry and there are no lasting damages and no deaths or serious injuries.

Thank you all for your concern.

It has put a minor dent in our thrivingness but, on the bright side, we have a few loose bricks looking for a buyer.

No. I was 300k away. But I am sitting nervously on a large fault-line running under our capital city.

Imagine San Francisco if you like.

I guess New Zealand will cease to exist, huh? But really, hope nothing bad happens.

Now, if some passing debris accidentally smashed into you and took damaged broke the part of you that held your ego, I wouldn't mind.

No. It will live hauntingly in your psyche. Tormenting you at every turn.

It's just that we won't be able to cheer.

I spotted this oldish thread and wondered why so many (20%) thought NZ would not exist.

Perhaps the forum is infested with geologists? Perhaps God will destroy this, largely atheist, country for being anti-American?

I am sure 1984Society could tell us if he existed anymore.

New Zealand will be a net exporter of wool for the global economy, which they will deliver to the UN dictatorship to distribute after taking a 50% tax off the top. They also stand a chance to be a tourist destination for the tiny elite that still exists 50 years from now.

You are clearly not au fait with NZ economics. Tourism, wool and meat will probably continue to do well but so will our vast dairy investments in China and our burgeoning oil production - which will probably be sucked up by Brazil.

If it can't make it on it's own, they can turn into a Mega Bank for all the billionares in the USA. A place to stash their wealth and provide resort like conditions where only the mega rich will visit. In fact some of the mega rich are so paranoid, they are seeking a cave or dwelling to seperat them from the common folk when the apocolyps comes. these Mega billionares like "Lil Dick" have underground dwellings to keep the masses out, for fear there will be a revolution between the rich and poor. Go figure, they feel so guilty about ripping off the public, they are now trying to hid form it. LOL...

Get some web cams of your topless beaches, and all the cool city life, and redesign NZ into the new Amsterdam. Legalize weed, make the churches pay tax, expand the beaches for the winter when it is summer on the other half of the world. Or join forces with Austrailia, and be their go to vacation resort. After all, there are super wealthy people out there who made billions off the massess. Just think, if you have nothing against muslims, those Dubai visitors will need another place to visit in the future because going to the same vacation spot gets boring fast, and you can only make the desert like like paradise up to a point.

Churches in NZ mostly do pay tax.
