I don't know if this was ever actually brought up in this topic, it is so long that I haven't read it, but one of the reasons that Germany got to the top so fast after WW2 before the other European powers is that they mass imported Turkish people to replace their lost population. The new 'temp workers' never left.

Now generations have past and Germany is a bicultural German-Turkish mixed society. Forget the Germany of legend 'breed of super humans' Germany isn't like that and a supposed 'superiority' is not why Germany reached the top so fast, unless you want to argue for Turkish 'superiority' as well. Rather Germany was the first to embrace the world economy and foreign national workers that gave them a huge profit, and there weren't native workers to displace since they were killed off in the Great War (WW2).

we had a German friend over this summer. During the banking Crisis Germany did one thing our gutless politicians REFUSED to do, due to the incestuous relationship the Fed has with the insider banking and wall street hustlers. Germany let its biggest gambling banks FAIL and bailed banks that did not gamble so much. There was no need for new laws with new loopholes. the massage was clear, you gamble with depositors money and lose you get no bail money. how much better would this country have been had we let the big banks Fail and bolstered others who gambled much less.

Yet they wrote mountains of bad loans had S&P rate these worthless mountains of packaged loans as AAA rated and cheated the world and then got bailed on our taxpayers backs. now that banks are dictating Loans and cutbacks across Europe and America it reminds how tony Soprano can burn down your restaurant( country) and then set up loans to Pay Him back after he confiscates any insurance money. geitner and the fed need to be in jail with the biggest wall street Bums and head of countrywide as well.

The U.S. is the richest country in the world so of course it has the most "things for killing people". It also produces many of the weapons used by its allies (Most European countries, Japan, South Korea, Saudi Arabia etc). Defense is a completely legitimate industry. You live with your head in the sand if you feel otherwise.

 

They are definitely a regional power, but definitely not a super power by the traditional definition of the term. It's a matter of power projection, and they don't have it.

It was a mistake to reunify Germany. History from the earliest of Germanic tribes fighting the Romans, to the last great reunification in 1939 confirms this. There has been peace with Germany from 1945 to the present, because the West maintained a watch upon the walls, kept the Aryan race in check. No longer. There is no check from the East. They would have struggled mightily to do so in the near term. They lack the power projection capabilties to do so. Of course in a couple of years they could get it done. The point was that they were of limited value in the NATO operation.

 

The point was that the Libya mission was neither in Germany´s nor (directly) in NATO´s strategic interest. Libya did not even attacked a NATO member. The whole engagement was a minor police act.

 

Thanks taking my sentence out of context. The point is, Germany hasn't showed itself capable of carrying out expeditionary missions.

Don't underestimate Germany. When you are talking about economic superpowers like Germany, if necessary, they could convert their manufacturing industry into a war machine rather quickly. They just don't have a reason too.
