Competing with them would require reforming our education system in ways that neither side seems to support.

Major reforms of your education system, with massive investment in technical colleges, strong private sector unions and public private parnerships.

You will also probably have to find a way to remove the dollar as the worlds reserve currency. Supporting the DSKs moves on SDRs might have been helpful in the long run.

EDIT: moving the burden of health insurance off of US manufacturers would probably be a help too.

They have a much more expansive entitlement system than us.

You're right that they have a strong work ethic though.

We can't. They have Mercedes, BMW, Audi and Volkswagen. The US has Ford, Chevy and... well that's really it now that Chrysler is owned by Fiat.

The German's have Heckler Koch, which supplies the US armed forces, specifically special operations with weapons, why not use weapons made in the US? (Hint: They're inferior)

Heck, I'd buy anything made in Germany over products made anywhere else.

They make the best beer as well!

They have nukes in germany but they are not german nukes. They could make their own with french assistance is they were so inclined but they haven't and probably won't the german public is so overwhelmingly anti nuke.

Imagine germany with a french attitude to nukes and a danish attitude to incineration. Heaven. :D

No, Germany is not a superpower, but they are still doing pretty good.

    1) They have a strong work ethics and make quality products. I think they make the best cars in the world, for example. That makes for good export and a good economy in general.

    2) I think the key is the German goverment. It works smoothly and appears competent. In contrast the US goverment seems to spend most of its time fighting a trench warfare between Dems and Reps.

    3) It is my impression from dealing with germans as part of my work that germans hate each other with a passion and are constantly at each others throats. This keeps them on their toes, I guess. You either preform or the other germans tear you apart. Just look at their soccer team, when are they NOT yelling at each other?

I don't see many Germans on the dole, maybe the many immigrants flooding that country are seeking it.

Germany's unemplyment rate has been much higher than the US's for a decade. It is only in the last 3 years that the situation has been reversed and it is still quiet high compared to the US's over the last ten years.

The question is whether they still have the capacity to do so. Asking the French for help would probably shorten the process, they unlike the british maintain an independant nuclear programme.

How high is their immigration rate? Their immigration laws were changed in 2005 to close the country to unskilled workers but the influx of people from eastern Asia have overwhelmed their system. I remember a lot of nationalist violence over immigration there. How can their economy absorb them?

After the war, money was poured in to rebuild Germany. Jump start.

It could be said there is more potential for them to take over the world through economics, where the previous military attempts failed. UK is not over keen to lose sovereignty to the EU and there are various reasons, but pretty sure that threat is amongst them.

It's more likely a matter of getting the enriched uranium or plutonium. A college student built a nuclear device a while back that would've been fully functional if they had the nuclear material to arm it.

Actually Audi is part of Volkswagen (as is Lamborghini, Bugatti, Bentley, Skoda, and SEAT) and VW also own 49% of Porsche.

But the German dominance of the quality market is not confined to motor cars and weaponry. German household appliances are also extremely highly regarded - our house is full of names like Miele, Bosch, AEG and Siemens. And so is German industrial machinery and hand tools.

In theory, I don't know about the beer, I was too young to drink when I was last in Germany. (And if you believe I haven't tasted German beer ... )

No, why would I be? There are actually several incidences of college students building nukes.
