I can't remember how it goes exactly but I recall a French saying that suggested that the English had a hundred religions (denominations) but only two sauces; France had two religions and a hundred sauces. You can talk about all the mid-evil times you want, but to the USA the French is what made the USA the great country it was back in the 1890s to the 1990s. Without the Frech the USA would be squat. Yeah, simple minds cannot quite grasp the fact that France has the third largest Jewish population in the world (half a million), has many Jews who take an active part in public life (including a past President of Jewish descent in Sarkozy), and that France is a prominent ally of Israel.
