Will the Hunter Biden gun charge prompt the GOP to advocate for background check enforcements?

I, for one, am happy that the GOP is whining about how Hunter got a "sweetheart deal" with respect to the federal gun charges. Let's review what the charges are: It is illegal to be in possession of a gun when being a user of a controlled substance. I think, this law should be strictly enforced, not just trusting the person buying the gun checking "no" in the appropriate box on the form, but doing an actual background check, to see if the answer is, in fact, true. If it is not true, throw the book of the law at them, with harsh federal penalties.

Now, considering that about 20% of Americans are pot users, that would disqualify all of them from gun possession. My feeling is that in a state like VW, for example, there is a significant overlap of the 31% population using marijuana and the 61% population owning a gun. Give them all 10 years in prison, if they lied on the background check form, I'd say.

My guess is, however, that the GOP and their voters are not interested in any of this, they just want to tar and feather Hunter Biden, in an effort to insert a picture in voters' minds of the Biden "crime family". It's all about petty politics, not really about enforcing gun laws and applying the appropriate penalties for violation.

Will it prompt Democrats to abolish BGCs?

Because of your own devotion to Trump, you overestimate how much Dems are devoted to Biden, let alone Hunter. The answer is that they are not devoted to Hunter at all, so this will not change their stance on universal background checks and their enforcement.

I don't believe the GOP has published an official comment on the sweetheart deal. I'd like to read it if you know where I can find it.

It isn't a background check form. It is a government threat that is simply retained by the gun dealer in case the ATF wants to see it in the future. The background check is handled by phone between the gun dealer and the ATF. The ATF simply looks for a criminal record. If there is none, then they approve the sale. I consider the form to be unconstitutional. Yes I know the legal establishment doesn't agree with that but so be it.

I assume that most gun enthusiasts consider the form to be unconstitutional. I do. So having said that I think the deal with Hunter Biden was appropriate for a victimless crime. He lied on an unconstitutional form and denied some revenue to federal government. I don't have a problem with it. The problem is that Hunter wasn't charged with anything that actually matters. That will have to wait for the next administration.

    As to point 1:

    https://twitter.com/therecount/status/1671178589897670658

McCarthy and Comer have both talked about the "sweetheart deal". In fact, it is all over the RW media, if it weren't, it wouldn't be regurgitated on here 100 times by the RW media followers.

As to points 2 and 3, I doubt that you'll find many people who will support your opinion that the background check form is unconstituational. Maybe gun nuts support that opinion, but the vast majority of the population (88%) support universal background checks. However, as always, the GOP politicians cater to the extreme RW fringe, who get them elected in the primaries, thus these politicians oppose ANY gun regulations.

You said GOP. That is a political party. Now you offer up individuals. So the GOP has not commented officially. Not a surprise. It wouldn't be in their interest to do that.

A gun nut is just a gun owner. There is no need to insult us. The GOP doesn't cater to me and I view "MAGA" republicans as standing to my left. It caters to some people to be sure but it is hard for me to form an opinion since I neither approve of nor involve myself with them.

This is a great question! Could Hunter Biden become the next poster child for gun advocates who oppose ANY restrictions on gun ownership? I sense a conflict. What is stronger: their conviction that the 2nd A addresses some sort of unrestricted "right" to own guns; or their hate for the name Biden?

This won't prompt Democrats to do.. ANYTHING. Lock him up!

This poses a conflict for Republican gun owners, but none for a SINGLE democrat. Not even Hunter's dad who is STILL pushing for stricter gun laws.

This is the difference between being a party that is consistent with their values, and... a Republican... who are just there for the cheap bumper stickers, but no real values anymore.

Rather than making new laws, how about just enforcing the ones already on the books?

Only 0.01% of violations like lying on 4473 forms are prosecuted. I’ve been calling for enforcement of this current law consistently. I don’t care if it’s Hunter or someone from WV.

In 2017 there were 112,000 known cases of false information being provided on 4473s. Only 12 cases were prosecuted.

If the government can’t or won’t prosecute more than 0.01% of known cases of lying on forms what makes people think we can or would throw the book at all violations by hillbillies that smoke weed in WV?

Exactly, background checks are already on the books. Why is the GOP fighting tooth and nail to stop them from being universal?

Are we pretending that you all aren't celebrating hunters legal decision? Hard to see how you are being consistent when celebrating the feds not enforcing the gun laws already on the books, while calling for more.

Why are democrats ignoring the feds not enforcing the gun laws already on the books with Hunter Biden? Where is the outrage from the left on fetterman chasing black man with a shotgun? Just a bunch of wing nuts.

Because it would be unenforceable, at least for the people who are most apt to use them illegally.

I will use myself as an example. A few years ago, I had around fifteen guns. I bought three of them new. I bought one from a relative and inherited the rest. I have since given away most of them to relatives.

If I decided to sell one of them, there would be no record of me every purchasing most of them and no record of those which I have on hand at this time. I could sell one of them without a background check and no one would ever know and it would be virtually impossible to trace the gun back to me.

In order for universal background checks to work, every person owning a gun would have to keep a record of that gun and the government would have to have a record of that gun. In order to ensure that record was accurate, the government would have to perform periodic no notice inspections of every home and property in the US and even then they would probably not be able to find all the guns. The lawless, of course, would likely just make sure their guns were never found during those inspections.

Rule #1 for creating laws. Don't create a law you cannot enforce.

    I don't know what you're pretending. I am saying what I believe.

I don't know what you're talking about. I don't celebrate ANYTHING. Obviously the idiotic Heller legislation passed by SCOTUS created a lot of confusion among law enforcement. Why in the world would I celebrate that?

You speak in riddles. If you have a point to make... make it! And cut the bull crap.

Because if background checks are not universal, they mean nothing. A pot smoker, for example, could still get a gun, they just have to buy it at a gun show or privately, and not at the dealer, to avoid the background check. Why do responsible gun owners oppose universal background checks? I don't get it.

do you have any idea how worthless a universal background check is? How do you enforce it without registering every gun in the USA?

Heller only prevented the FEDERAL government doing something it never had the proper power to do in the first place. HTF did that cause confusion among "law enforcement"?

How is a universal background check going to stop someone from lying on their 4473?

There's no gun show loophole. Stop repeating that lie.

This tells me that Hunter Biden is in a lot less trouble that Trump. I don't know where Hunter had the authority to purchase a hand gun and was it legal for him to do it? I just hope that Hunter stays out of trouble from here on out.
